Cosplay Photoshoot EtiquetteMy good friend hikaraseru has written a very good guide on how a standard cosplay photoshoot should be conducted in a conducive manner. I got her permission to post the entire article up, so hope you guys like what she is presenting to us.Cosplay Photoshoot Etiquette3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Want to plan a cosplay shoot, but somehow things just don't turn out right? Maybe the photos were not how you visualised them, or that the photographer seemed to be extra grumpy, or you just don't know what's going on? Read on for how to get the best out of your cosplay shoot:
The 4 Ps:
Having a plan is essential and should take up the most time overall in your shoot. Speak to the photographers closely, because they will be the ones producing the photos that will be the end result; make sure they are aware of the concept and background of the series you're shooting. Some photographers will want to do their own research prior to the shoot (reading the manga/watching the anime/looking up reference photos) - so make sur

Introducing you COPYIntroducing you COPY, Dropbox's direct competitor.Introducing you COPY2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's technically the same as Dropbox, but offers much more space at an initial 15gb of cloud space FREE.
So click this https://copy.com?r=veqtNG and it'll take you through my referral to the page.
Why through my referral?
Because when you sign up you get 15GB cloud space free.
But through a referrer's link, once you verify your email and then download & install either the Copy app or program, like dropbox, we both get additional 5GB on top of that.
Now, that's fun and most important more space for free!
Then after that you can introduce it to all your friends for similar results and you can rack up tons of 5GB per referral.
In case you missed the link, click this https://copy.com?r=veqtNG
Just to push up and let more people know about this!
By the way, I have quite a number of users who registered BUT have not install the app/program on their phone or computer, that means it's not a full process, and you won't get t
Why are we slower?About a month ago I finally got to meet an art hero of mine, Klaus Janson, a well known pro who's been in the industry for over 30 years. A mutual friend introduced us, and we hit it off right away. The group of us went through the Village hitting pub after pub, and soon I was drunk enough to ask Klaus something that had been bugging me.Why are we slower?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I asked him if modern comic artists are, on average, slower than we used to be. He said yes, and I agreed.
From the Golden Age until the 80s, pencillers were generally expected to turn in at least two pages a day, while an inker was expected to turn in around 3-4. There were a handful of exceptions, I'm sure, but most of the artists could pump out pages like human printing presses. In the current comic industry, it's completely reversed: while a handful of artists can still hit this speed, the vast majority can't. Pencillers today struggle to produce a page-per-day, while inkers (those who still ink with ink) are hitting around 2.
So what happened? I'v
WowzersFirst I would like to say... wow. I don't really care much for pageviews and I tend to ignore them (the exceptions being for my web comics where I actually make money off pageviews), but the crazy stats that my two political cartoons generated here on DA just blows me away! Even more amazing to me was that it spread to places like tumblr too, a place that generally dislikes me and that I tend to get little to no reblogs.Wowzers3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's good to see that even though some people might hate my guts for whatever reason, when the issue at hand is worthy people will spread the message anyway.
Don't think this is giving me a swell head or anything. I could easily whip out a bunch of cheap political comics to take advantage of all this goodwill and rack up pageviews and whatnot, but I don't want to. I've said my peace on the two biggest issues that were bothering me about this election cycle thus far and I have no desire to milk it further. Unless politicians do something outrageously stupid or piss me o

Big Ben ResponseA succinct summary of the recent complaints:Big Ben Response3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"You somehow magically gained the ability to draw near-photorealistic buildings overnight and you choose to use this amazing newfound skill to draw a building in the background? Get serious dude."
This is a redrawing of Big Ben (using a different reference photo BTW) to show that I am actually capable of drawing architecture just fine. I only used the computer for the poster version because I wanted more control over it.
I'm gonna be leaving Big Ben the way it is in the poster. There's nothing to "own up to" about it other than saying "sorry I used such a recognizable image source of a popular and well known landmark as reference." I did not trace.
Curious that so many of the people crying "copyright infringement" over me using reference are also the same people who take my comics and make "parodies" of them by cutting, rearranging, and re-uploading th
Big BenSo in case you haven't heard yet, some kind YouTuber found the reference image I used to draw Big Ben for my London poster, warped and skewed it to match the angle, and made a rather catchy song proclaiming how I traced it while the image flickers back and fourth between the photo and my drawing as "proof."Big Ben3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know I have haters out there, and some of them seem to have unhealthy obsessions with finding fault in everything I do, but this is taking it pretty far, don't you think? Even if it were traced, Big Ben is such an iconic image that you'd be hard pressed to find a different angle to work with, especially since it's box-shaped and all sides look the same.
I should probably point out that if you see pixelation in the tower, it's because the whole image has been reduced and saved at only 60% normal JPEG compression. It's a trick used to keep the image good enough to be seen but bad enough to be printed, thus encouraging sales on the larger non pixelated poster.

It's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

My work has been chosen for this year's EXPOSÉ. For a good start. It's a huge honor to be listed among the best artists out there.
But holy shit. You know what sucks about aiming high - the neverending fear that after all you won't meet the standards (=my life)
Devious Journal EntryI just suffered shock at advice I saw being given to a convention goer of how to keep her energy levels up while at a convention...Devious Journal Entry3 years ago in Personal More Like This
- Hold soda in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it, as your mouth absorbs the sugars quicker
- Drink OJ with sugar added to it
- Honey sticks
Basically, the advice given was "SUGAR, AND LOTS OF IT!"
I don't know what people are taught about health in the USA, but clearly it's VERY different to the UK. People, PLEASE don't live on sugar at a convention! Not only is it bad for your teeth, but bad for your health, and it's NOT the best source of energy there is!
Eating regularly and healthily, especially wholemeals, will provide you with a much healthier and long-lasting source of energy. Sure, you may get a brief rush from a Red Bull, but you'll have a crash as well. I know none of us take the best care of ourselves at cons, but at least TRY to get in a decent breakfast, lunch and dinner. And drink plenty of water!!
And definitely don't ad

We (Sarah and I) have been working pretty hard putting this together over our winter break and there's a few nifty extras to show for it. First off, we've created some new material exclusive to this book. There's 2 brand new comics, "The Legend" (which will be closest thing to an actual appearance by Mario in this series) and "Princess Bikini Party." There's also a set of "Super Loser Club" parody trading cards for you to cut out and enjoy. This stuff will ONLY BE APPEARING IN THIS BOOK and won't be online or anywhere else. We've also included an art gallery with some new stuff as well.
However, what I had the most fun with was the 3 nifty var

1) A1-sized black matt paper, plus a black corrugated board as a common base for most of my shots. The Bras Basah outlet of ArtFriend is my best friend (no pun intended) when it comes to craft materials.
2) The transparent plastic tray that holds your nendoroid, it helps to produce great lighting effects!
3) The quintessential figma stand. That's how I get all of them to stand on their own. Most tedious aspect of the session, since it must be kept in the blind spot.
4, 5) Speedlights remotely triggered via my pop-up flash. Gel them, adjust their positions and output power till you achieve the desired effect. Heck, try out different gels too!
6) Another speedlight as key on a lightstand, and I usually deploy it with a 1/4 CTO for subtle warmth. Again, try out other corrections to achieve other effects!
7) In-package instructional leaflet as flags, so the background

This film seemed to have a very quiet release. I don't recall anyone really talking about it, and I don't recall seeing much advertisements for it either. After the dismal failure of the most recent Shrek movies, the prospect of another film with these characters is pretty unappealing, but Puss in Boots takes an unexpected turn.
Instead of following within the continuity of the Shrek franchise, Puss in Boots goes the origin story route by setting him in an alternate world. It's still populated by a couple fairy tale characters, but it's nowhere near the level of the Shrek series, focusing instead on the relationship between the three main characters.
I liked the film, though it isn't anything special. It's a cute movie with good voice actors, a fun story, a nice dynamic of character development, and some really impressive visuals. But in the end it doesn't ever feel like you've just seen something truly special the way most Pixar movies do. Also, the villains of Ja

BEFORE WATCHMEN & AH!Well, the word is out: DC Comics is returning to the world of WATCHMEN! And I am drawing all four issues of the DOCTOR MANHATTAN miniseries. First sign of the Apocalypse? You bet!BEFORE WATCHMEN & AH!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's great to finally be able to talk about this project. I signed on AGES ago, and have kept mum about it, until now!
WATCHMEN is arguably the greatest superhero comic ever produced, and without a doubt my absolute favorite. Being allowed to draw these amazing characters isn't actually a dream come true: I never thought something like this would happen. I'm pretty nervous, but having fun so far.
My history with WATCHMEN goes way back. In 1986 I was working at Thunder Road Comics in Burlington, New Jersey, and I sold every issue of WATCHMEN as they came out. It was a pretty amazing time: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS was also shipping, so superhero comics were enjoying a banner year. The mullets, parachute pants, and
To artists who want to offer commissions.I would like to address something I have been seeing as of late here and on other sites. Artists who are asking if someone would commission them if they were to offer commissions and if so, how much should they charge or how much are they willing to pay?To artists who want to offer commissions.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I say this with a real heart to all artists, but that is a foolish line of questions.
Really. I have been there. I even did those myself. But look at it from the side of a potential buyer.
1: Would you even commission me?
Can you imagine if a doctor were to say that? If I were to open an office would you even come to me? That makes the doctor feel like a failure. Like he has so little faith in his ability to do his job he is afraid to do it. So he has to ask a thousand people IF he were to open an office would ANYONE come? Would you? Or would you want a doctor who just opens it and does his job and believes in his ability to treat you?
Same with an artist. You sound like you have no f

I think just about every circle develops a canonically acceptable aesthetic after a fair bit of time, and it's some of the most beautiful, fascinating things I've ever witnessed. There's not really an overt right-ness or wrong-ness to the aesthetic, but it's dictated by reactions ranging from the quiet nods and thumbs-up gestures to resounding choruses of emphatic support. It seems to happen very democratically, but it all appears to sort of quarantine itself into a realm of sometimes uncritical de facto uniformity.
In terms of visual culture, every image-sharing platform eventually kind of develops a preferred visual inclination. Deviantart, Pixiv, SheezyArt, Newgrounds, CGHub, Tumblr, and wherever else you find people interacting with images as both creators and consumers eventually seem to develop this clear dominant visual aesthetic for all kinds of different reasons ranging from location, restrictions of media, national-cultural contexts, e
