Podcast, and Pin-Up Art: A RantI did a podcast with :iconKanish:! Please excuse my muffling microphone, my audio equipment is terrible... -_-Podcast, and Pin-Up Art: A Rant10 months ago in Personal More Like This
We talked about a bunch of stuff, from dinosaurs, concept art, design, movies, my thought process on art in general.
The last segment is about me and pin-up art, drawing women, and what that means for me as an artist. I wasn't particularly articulate but I think I was being honest about why I do it. I've had time to mull over it and talk with other artists, because I think it's an interesting impulse that people have to make pin-up art. For me it starts as a simple endeavor; I'm a horny, heterosexual male, and I find women aesthetically pleasing and incredibly hard to draw. I'm not going to pretend that isn't part of it. Is that the reason why I make pin-up art? I don't think so, because those are universal truths that everyone knows and is familiar with. There's plenty of horny males that don't draw pin-u
Obsessive Character DisorderI'm not exactly sure why there appears to be such a warzone where characters are concerned. Maybe it's just because I don't swim in the soup of fandom or fanfiction (and in a roleplay sense, have only returned recently), but I guess I just find the whole thing entirely baffling. Roleplay and fanfiction become these massive tiers of Serious Business that are destructive to the creative process. They stagnate and shame while simultaneously churning out high emotion, all the while distracting anyone who wants to learn from shit that will actually be useful to them if they want to write.Obsessive Character Disorder3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I feel the need to give a disclaimer that A) I think fandoms can be incredibly stupid even at their best, B) fanfiction that is "not horribly written" is usually being labeled as such by people who don't and can't know better because their point of reference and experiences are so lacking, and C) even as a writer, I don't understand how character becomes such Serious Business.
Sucker PunchedThis is a LONG one so settle in!Sucker Punched1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I’ve been re-watching Sucker Punch a lot lately and have been humorously admiring how misunderstood it is. It’s almost comical how a movie that comes right out and says “I am about the negative connotations surrounding the constant sexual abuse and objectification that women endure,” gets reviewed and dismissed as “just another pandering male geek fantasy of objectified sexualized women.”
I could write a book on the various subtle metaphors and messages Sucker Punch visualizes, but I don’t wanna bore you all. But to demonstrate what I mean let’s just dissect a small piece of it.
Before we begin we need to understand two things. First, Director Zach Snyder made the film with the express intent of it being a feminist critique on geek culture. If you don’t believe me, hear it from his own words: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/interview-zack-snyder-on-the-sexuality-and-world

The erasure of human history.Let me tell you a little bit about the House of Wisdom. The erasure of human history.2 months ago in Personal More Like This
It was founded in the 8th century, eventually becoming based in Baghdad, and was a major intellectual centre during the Islamic Golden Age. Scholars there made it their business to collect as much information as they could, from all corners of the known world. They would collect books and texts and return them home for translation. It made the people of the Islamic world among the most culturally advanced on the planet.
They constructed astronomical observatories, they forwarded the science of medicine, mathematics, chemistry, zoology, geography and cartography. They drew upon the work of both those who had come before, and their contemporaries, and then advanced it. Many inventions from the Islamic Golden Age have had a legacy that lasts up until this very day:
So, what happened? If the House of Wisdom was such a fountain of knowledge a

I have been on DeviantART for one year.I had hoped to post this on the anniversary of my joining dA, but I had not uploaded all the Scraps that I wanted to because I have recently bought a new computer and changing the files and uploading software to it has taken some time, so I am 5 days late.I have been on DeviantART for one year.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Firstly I must extend my most sincere thanks to all the kind people that have visited my profile page, viewed my drawings, left comments, given favourites and watches over the last year. When I joined dA a year ago I had no idea that anyone would want to look at my drawings.
I have received a number of comments from young members along the lines of 'I wish I could draw like you!' and I thought that if I chronicled my progression it might provide encouragement for these young artists as I started from a very low level and have had no tuition for any improvements that I have made. I have no doubt that anyone, with a certain amount of practice, could achieve similar results.

New Groups Affiliates feature launched! Ask, and you shall receive!New Groups Affiliates feature launched!5 years ago in Personal More Like This
DeviantART's Groups platform has been officially launched and out the door for just under a month. In that time, we've seen the creation of 31,000 groups, with over 1.2 million deviants participating. Looking ahead, we're eager to develop and release the Groups enhancements deviants want most -- the enhancements you tell us will have the most impact on your Groups experience and the Groups ecosystem.
With that in mind, we're happy to launch something that's been very high on the list of requests -- the official Groups Affiliates feature!
It's easy to get started!
1. Navigate to your group
(Keep in mind that, by default, only Founders and Co-Founders have the privilege to send affiliation requests.)
2. Type the name of the group you want to affiliate
How to make clickable icon links for your journal.Want to learn how to spice up your page with icons like I have on the top of this journal? How to make clickable icon links for your journal.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here's all of the stuff you need to do it!
First off, you MUST be an active DeviantART subscriber with an active membership.
If you don't have a membership, just ignore this journal or pass it on to a friend who has one!
You need to type in a specific CSS code in order to get your icon to appear.
[You can copy and paste the completed code by clicking here.]
It should look like this:
Now you should have a working icon code. Paste the code into your journal or where ever you want it on your page.
(it won't work in comments, private notes, signatures, or deviation descriptions)
Now tweak the code to create your own clickable icon!
Here's a breakdown of where and what to edit:
To make your icon link to your webpage, edit the first half of the code. You can paste your link right after:

This week, Khader Adnan entered his third month of a hunger strike
against his unlawful detention and mistreatment at the hands of the Israeli military.
The deafening silence by world leaders and media at his plight shames us all.

Palestinians protest in solidarity with Khader Adnan
Somewhere in the Middle East, a 33-year old man is today entering the 60th day of a hunger strike.
He is currently lying – as he has done for weeks – with one hand, and one leg,
shackled to his hospital bed. By the time you read this, he could be dead.
Of course, had he been an Iranian opposition journalist

Darksiders: Your Last Days Contest Winners The Epic QuestDarksiders: Your Last Days Contest Winners5 years ago in Official DeviantArt Contests More Like This
It was fascinating to see all of the deviantART community's different depictions of their personal apocalypses. The imagination and quality of work that we received for the Darksiders: Your Last Days Contest was extremely impressive. So thank you, our dear deviantART community!
We'd also like to give a big "Thank you!" to Joe Madureira from Vigil Games for picking the three winners from the terrific Semi-Finalists. It was a tough job, and we sure are glad he stepped up to the challenge. Thanks, Joe Mad!
So whose visions of their last days really stood out among the rest? Let's check out the winners!
Publishing ScamsCopied and pasted from my blog since deviantART's been having this problem for a while now. I had meant to post something on this matter back in October since it was when I noticed more and more "publishers" like this popping up on the site, but never got around to it. Of course, with all of these unprofessional publishers coming out of the woodwork again recently, I thought I'd share what I shared on my blog here.Publishing Scams2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
What is a scam publisher?
Essentially, a scam publisher is a press that cheats authors into believing that they are getting traditionally published by their rules and guidelines. However, if you read the fine print, you'll see that "traditionally" publishing you is not at all what's happening. This can range from promising royalties which never come, making you pay a fee to be published, or even stem from lack of professionalism. While the term "scam" usually means forcing you to pay, there are many other

Submissions are not possible, (I hate this procedure of accepting and declining), I will ask you, I will invite your works and it would be nice if you take part in this project.

If your answer is "yes" to any of the above questions then you are at the right place! Today, I'll tell you (or at least give you a better idea) how to start up with your commission work and setting up the right price.
A little introduction about myself: I am a hobby-driven artist who mainly deals with CSS coding and graphics designing (now) in deviantART. As a profession I am currently employed as an online marketing professional who looks after two leading online gaming brands. I like to help people customize their pages and support them to be a better artist in deviantART.
Having given my short introduction let us first understand that why most of us face a lot of trouble to get commission work or worst, to set up the "right" price for their service.

bullyingEdit09-11-2011: since you brought so much attention to this journal let me add something from myself:bullying3 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you have ever been bullied, please don't keep the hurt, the rage, the bad feeling inside of you. TALK TO SOMEBODY! Tell them what happened. Share how you feel, it will help you find a way, it will help you realize you're not alone. No matter how ashamed you are, no matter what you think that people may say about it.
I know from expirience that victims always feel like they are the guilty ones and they shut up about it. But just share it with somebody, even if it's a friend over the internet, even if its on your facebook wall. The more you keep it inside, the more it grows, so set it free. And keep going with life, no matter how hard it is. One step at a time.
"A teacher in New York was teaching her class about bullying and gave them the following exercise to perform. She had the children take out a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stomp on it and really mess it up, not
