Featuring Christmas and Winter's Magic!***Featuring Christmas and Winter's Magic!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!
In the midst of my studies I decided to put together this special feature. Some of these works are from my most recent forum thread, encouraging people to post their work. Some I found on #Getwatchers - a place I do encourage you to join; it'd be nice to see some new works! Maybe it's just me but the place is becoming less active... Others are from snooping the newest deviations on the front page. Hope you like!

Hope all of your celebrations were successful and created many great memories. Let's kick of 2014 with a feature!
Here are a bunch of deviations that I either stumbled upon on the forums or were posted in one of my threads. Be sure to show these artists some love- they deserve to start their new year off with some notifications!

Taking (Digital) Art to the 'Next Step'Note:Taking (Digital) Art to the 'Next Step'4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
I am by no means an expert - digital artwork is a weak point for me! But this was originally a response to a forum post by :iconapril1999: that :iconsimple-minds: asked me to put into a journal, so here ya go A lot of what I talk about is based on what I know from photography (so not a 'How to' tutorial), but I think the principles discussed bellow are translatable.
Deviant Art is a fantastic website for creating art, sharing it and getting advice. However it is very easy to get lost in a crowd of other artists all doing the same thing. These are some tips or things that I've noticed that make an artwork stand out to me:
Start thinking of more of the "stories" behind your artwork.
This doesn't necessarily mean making an OC or a comic, or anything like that - But having an idea of what mood or feelings you want the work to convey will give you a much stronger final product. Then focus on how to implement that story and
10 Years of ControversyOver the past couple days I’ve had a number of people write me comments basically saying “You’re becoming too preachy, you’ve lost a fan.” And outside the silliness of publicly mic-dropping like that, it got me wondering... what?10 Years of Controversy10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Ya see, It’s always surprises me when someone says that I’m becoming too preachy, when in fact I’ve been preachy from the beginning. Don’t believe me? Take a look below!
This is not a complete list by any stretch of the imagination, but these are essentially THE MOST controversial comics and illustrations I’ve ever done in the past 10 years.

Congratulations. Your prize: free art picture.
The whole "fave the journal"-rule was a scientific experiment. Getting this extra-attention is nice, of course, but I think I'll keep these lotteries small and personal in the future. I don't, understandably, want someone to come in just for the lottery and free art potentiality. But we'll see...
The next sirtiefling-event should be one of them "use your creativity"-contests. So be ready.

Do I take commissions? Sorry, no. (I'm glad I don't need to do this for a living!) The only commission-ishy exceptions have been the times when someone has extended my premium membership. Gesture/pose drawing for beginners!Hey guys!Gesture/pose drawing for beginners!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I got a lot of emails after the last poll about gesture drawing. So I want to recommend one of the best book about it and a few helpful sites.
There are plenty of publications about body drawing. Some are worse than others. But one definitely amazed me! It is Mastering Drawing the Human Figure From Life, Memory, Imagination by Jack Faragasso. Perfectly explains the proportions and shapes. Friendly for beginners and advanced! I often use it. You can buy it online or look for pdf form.
If you want to try a gesture drawing ( wikipedia: typical situations involve an artist drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 30 seconds, or as long as 2 minutes ) - I think there are three useful sites:
They help to catch the correct

1. What kind of paper do you use?
I either use the DC supplied art board smooth finish, but since I've started inking my own work with the washes I've been using Canson 14x17 Bristol with the Smooth finish. It comes in a pad which contains 15 pages http://www.amazon.com/Canson-Smooth-Bristol-Pads-sheets/dp/B0013USWEM . I usually rule out the page to 11.5 x 17. I use the extra space on the side to do ink tests and run my brush and washes.
2. What kind of pencil do you use?
I use a .05 staedtler mechanical pencil with an HB lead. http://www.staedtler.com/graphite_925_eng.Staedtler I also use a kneaded eraser http://www.amazon.com/Sanford-Design-Kneaded-Eraser-Large/dp/B00006IFAJ to lightly erase my roughs but it leave

Art fundamentals. Here's a little introduction onto what these are and why I am sharing them. If you want to skip to the nitty gritty information skip down to the first line of bold text that's where all the good stuff is.Art fundamentals.1 month ago in Personal More Like This
I originally wrote The basics. a couple months back as a means to show people a way to progress in their art. Since it was rushed I never took the time to go back and spruce it up with more detail so I'll be doing that in this journal.
So what are the basics? They are Art Fundamentals. And art fundamentals are the basis for creating a convincing piece that has proper depth, lighting, color theory etc. It's more or less a few rules that are good to keep in mind when creating a piece. It's good practice to study these as a beginner and revisit them throughout your entire art career. Even professional artists revisit these and know these fundamental rules very well. (Most do at least).
These rules aren't the end all be all to art and they may n

The Inevitability of IndividualityI've been working on this for quite a while and I really hope you guys enjoy the result. I was looking through my favourites and it struck me how images with a similar composition can look so different, particularly of people. The phrase "The inevitability of individuality" came to me, and thus this project was born. Now, posting it, it feels like a piece of artwork in itself but sadly all the images belong to other people (click through and fave!). In any case the point of this art piece is to remind us all that no matter what we do we are uniquely ourselves. There's no point, and no need, to try and be someone else. You're perfect as you are.The Inevitability of Individuality1 year ago in Art Features More Like This

A little story...Wanted to share this story with you guys, and future creators:A little story...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
After getting out of a slump, I wanted to share this story of something I went through a few years back. Bit of a read, but thanks for sticking through it
As you know, Comic-Con is arriving and as I prepare for it, I grow more and more anticipated with anxiety/joy in regards to the re-release of Last Man Standing.
As long, challenging, and mind-opening the creation of LMS was, something really stuck with me.
Before I had created LMS, I wanted to work for WETA Workshop. To those that don't know them, they've created props, designs, sets, costumes, and more for The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, District-9, Elysium, The Hobbit and many more films.
I was obsessed and inspired with them. The creator, Richard Taylor was always a huge inspiration to me. After viewing supplements on the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings DVDS, I knew right there: I HAD TO WORK FOR THEM.
So I al

Welcome to the second issue of BibLITothèque: the Writer's Library!
This issue is going to sound oddly specific, but it's important for prose fiction (and narrative poetry!) I'm going to show you how to make appropriate word choices based on the setting and context of your story. First, take a moment to think about two elements of your work.
Setting: When and where does it take place? Do you want a certain feel to your setting? For example, Supernatural is a contemporary Western, while Firefly is a space Western. Both are very different from spaghetti Westerns with traditional cowboys.
Narrator: This might be your main character, a minor character observing the action, or an uninvolved character telling a story. These people all have their own voice, and word choice is critical in building a distinct, consistent narrative voice.
Got that i
