The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.1 I've been thinking about how and why we learn to draw for a few years now. I started self-analazing my own drawing and character design thought process when I began writing my first art instruction book, "Creating Characters with Personality". It was harder than I thought to verbalize how I've learned and how I process drawing. This has led me to start looking back at my artistic life and how I learned art. What made me learn the most? What drove me to draw and stick with it? What led to others I knew as a child to stop drawing? I think I'm ready to present some of those thoughts here on DA and hear what you think. So, this is part 1 of three in a series. I'm not sure where this is leading, but step one is my establishing an online art instruction school called Taught ByA PRO (www.taughbyapro.com) that will (in phase one) concentrate on drawing instruction for all forms of media. Here we go:The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.12 years ago in Personal More Like This

Glen Keane - an icon in the history of animationGlen Keane - an icon in the history of animation3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Born in Philadelphia in April 1954, Glen Keane is an American author, animator and illustrator who is widely known for his work in various Disney movies such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Tangled, amongst others.
His father Bil Keane, cartoonist and creator of The Family Circus, played an important role in Keane's early interest in art, instructing him to analyze body forms and the creative approach to life drawing when giving him a copy of Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy.
After graduating high school, Keane went to the California Institute of the Arts where he was mentored by animation teacher Jules Engel, as his application was accidentally sent to the Program in Experimental Animation (called Film Graphics b

Where creativity matters, but money matters more.
Anyone thinking of going into these schools should seriously reconsider. Unfortunately for me I didn't have the foresight to do some research on this institution beyond seeing what kinds of programs they offered, and didn't extensively look into other options because "this is it they have exactly what I want this is where I want to go". As already stated in my last Journal, I have another nine months left of my degree when I start back on Monday, and I'm writing this now because, as someone who's been attending this school since Summer 2010, I can honestly say this is thus far the worst financial decision I've ever made.
Rewind to summer of 2010;

Publishing Manga, Comics, Graphic Novels, ArtbooksHello, I'm Jochannon; I've been publishing online for about two years, strictly small-time, but I do have dreams.Publishing Manga, Comics, Graphic Novels, Artbooks4 years ago in Personal More Like This
WHAT I'M DOING
Every week I publish art of all sorts including manga, comics, graphic novels and art books too; that's what this journal is about.
I will take artwork from pretty much any genre and type: prose, poetry, comics, you name it.
Because I publish by email there is a size limit on what I can publish: multi-page comics and manga may need to be published as serials.
Once I have published a piece of art, all rights to it revert to the creator.
Sex: it's normal, it's natural, having sex or nudity in your art will not disqualify it, but I will not publish pornography or erotica.
Considering the previous paragraph, artwork touching on rape or pedophilia must handle the subject with delicacy
I reserve the right to not publish any artwork that I find personally offensive.
I will not edit your art, but publish them exactly the way yo

There is no cosmic law that states artists must suffer many long years and demeaning day-jobs before a window of opportunity cracks open just enough to hop on through.
Fellow deviant Brian Kesinger is a case in point.
His first “day-job” in 1996—he was hired straight out of his senior year of high school—was drawing Tarzan for Disney.
Brian stayed at Disney and he considers every day there a part of his ongoing education as an artist. He most recent

Well if it hasn't been made abundantly clear already, everyone reading this should know that I have virtually no decent people skills. For some reason saying a simple "thank you" is as far out of reach to me as the moniker of Best Pony is to Diamond Tiara. But unlike Diamond Tiara, I do not hide behind the excuse of "my father is rich and therefore all of my detestable behavior should be excused, so damn cool your jets I only insulted Scootaloo that one time."
So, to make this as impersonal as possible, I would like to thank each and every person who sent me a "happy birthday" message, through a comment, Note, Shoutbox shout, YouTube video link or otherwise
And believe me when I say there were a lot of you.
A lot of you.
I can very honestly say that it continues to surprise me how many people l

the short version,
Korrasami is Confirmed!
from Michael Dantedimartino:
Now that Korra and Asami’s final moment is out in the world, it seems like an appropriate time to express how I feel about it. I didn’t want to say anything right away so the audience could experience the finale for themselves.
The main themes of the Avatar universe have always revolved around equality, justice, acceptance, tolerance, and balancing differing worldviews. In subtle and maybe not so subtle ways, Avatar and Legend of Korra have dealt with difficult subjects such as genocide, child abuse, deaths of loved ones, and post traumatic stress. I took it as a complement when Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair called the show subversive. There were times even I was surprised we were able to delve into the really tough stuff on a children’s TV network. While the episode
