Two choices, one fate
It was two days after Bellatrixs arrival when Sheogorath sent for her once more. He had been so kind as to let her rest, deciding that she was in no condition to be running errands for him quite yet. He had refused to tell her more about Xedilian, however, causing Bellatrix to blatantly ignore him for those two days.
Bellatrix was sitting out in the courtyard, simply enjoying the feel of the wind on her face and the sweet taste of freedom when Ellette came not long after midmorning, bearing the news that the Lord Sheogorath had requested her presence immediately. The assassin grudgingly complied, finding Sheogorath standing at a small round table near the base of his throne. Bellatrix studied his lean build for only an instant before gliding her way to his side. Her eyes were drawn to the parchment spread out on the table; a yellowed, detailed and rather beautiful map.
So- Xedilian falls Southeast of The Fringe. You see

While this is called the 'Team Fortress Character Guide', a lot of the information contained within can be applied to fan characters with many different origins.
Team Fortress 2. A team-based FPS romp through a crazy little world set in an alternate universe version of the 1960s. With a story told mostly through comics and official timelines, an economy based on hats, accessories and bizarre weapons, and a very blurred line between reality and fiction, the game has many fans and an incredible potential for fan fiction. Where there is potential, there are stories...and unfortunately, when stories are written, Mary Sue tends to rear her speshul snowflake head. Mary waltzes in through the Fortress doors and, like a black hole, she warps the very fabric of time and space around herself to fit her needs. Also like a black hole, it's hard to tell where Mary will show up next. Alright, ladies and gents. Mission begins in ten seconds. Last one alive, lock the door!

In an unexpected development, police have closed the case against the kidnapper of twenty year old Nicole Cantrip. 'The circumstances surrounding Miss Cantrip's alleged disappearance have become clearer,' Inspector Frank Jones told the Tribune, 'and it's come to light that the case was filed in error. There is no evidence whatsoever that a kidnapping took place.' Since Cantrip is over eighteen, the applicable missing person legislation is almost non-existent, much to the dismay of her mother.
'Something has gone horribly wrong when a girl can be forced away from her family by people she's never met and it's called normal,' said a tearful May Cantrip. 'Nix wouldn't have abandoned us, dropped out of all her classes and left everything behind unless
somebody was forcing her.' Mrs. Cantrip claims that her home was invaded by several men who demanded that her daughter accompany them to what she describes as 'a k

1)Opinions should be backed up by facts.
2) Do not take every single opinion as a personal attack. I very doubt you will ever find a person with the exact same views as you.
3) Have a realistic outlook on life. Don't be over-over-over pessimistic, but whatever the fuck you do, being a bubbly optimist can make you pretty useless.
4) Don't say things you are unsure of like it's muscle memory. You'll look extremely ignorant when someone calls out your bullshit.
5) Learn about the Dunning-Kruger effect. If you think you are great at something, and people on a credible level criticize you and pretty much tell you it's shit, you're most likely not as good as you thought you were.
6) To prove you are a mature person, don't say "I am mature; you are not." It has the opposite effect.
7) Use proper grammar. If you abbreviate some things like "assoc." for "association," that's fine. But please don't type/write to me like you just learned the alphabet and is compl

This summer has not shaped up how any of us expected, has it? To think that one year ago we were sitting in the lap of luxury, and now we are scattered to the ends of the continent in a miserable exile. It is unbearable to think of our cousins still feasting, draped in jewels, while we must content ourselves to live on their pity.
Forgive me. You asked, of course, about the rest of the family in your last letter. Grandfather has been horribly boring lately, sulking around and not doing anything. I know he misses having a kingdom, but really! I do not understand how he manages to spend so much time just lounging around.
I found Anne’s diary the other day, and to quote from it -
“While being away from home has its disadvantages, I like being surrounded by so many men that are not our relatives. It is a relief to be able to carry on an affair with one of them without having to worry that he is really our cook.

I just got done making my first witches bottle charm!!
And I have to tell you! As I was doing the charm it was as if my sickness was being eased by my spell already!
Oh my elementals it was amazing!
I haven't even charged it under the new moon yet and it's working!
Here's what I used! I used 3 or 9 pinches of each because those are my magic numbers!
First I used wax chips from my ritual candles! I used the wax from my earth air fire water and spirit candles! The reason I used these is because they are already charged with magic from my energy and spell work! Next I used a new ritual bath salt mixture I made yesterday! Then I used lavender flowers and jasmine flowers! Next I put in sage, basil, bay leaf, nutmeg, and thyme! Then I used crushed up incense! Next I used three clipped ends of peacock feathers, one blue one red one white! Then three drops of blessed water that i asked to p
The Problems With Stories Written by TeenagersDon't be offended at the title. "Teenagers" is just my way of saying "people who write unprofessional/shallow stories." Not all teenagers write shallow stories, it just sounds catchier.... Anyway. The Problems With Stories Written by Teenagers2 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
The first thing I want to make clear is: I'm not talking about anything mechanical in this deviation. Grammar/spelling is important (obviously), but that point has been beaten to death by people on the internet already. My purpose, as always, is to talk about the stories themselves, regardless of the way they are communicated. Whether it be through written word or on-the-spot narration, I believe there are certain tricks to telling good stories. Not rules, mind you. Tricks.
I don't believe that telling good stories is about what you "should" do, rather than what you shouldn't. Example: people generally hate Mary Sues, right? Well, sometimes I notice things that are "like" Mary Sues, in the sense that they're equally as shallow/unprofessional ways of telling stories. The purpose of this deviat

Your music is terrible. Well, okay, maybe not all of it. Just the lyrics.
Truth is, you're an immature weenie who can't accept any form of criticism. Proof? I've got proof.
Let's look at Mean, your newest single.
"Someday I'll be living in the big ol' city, and all you're ever gonna be is mean."
What the fuck is this? This is something that an awkward, bumbly 12-year old says to the other kids who call her weird. This is the phrase that people say when (surprise, surprise) They're in middle school and can't stand the "bullies". Half the time, those bullies are NORMAL kids picking on the WEIRDO. You know, the normal kids who go on to grow up and become things like doctors and engineers and singers? While the weird kids had no social skills and eventually became a janitor or something? Yeah.
"I can see you years from now in a bar...Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things, drunk and grumbling on about how I CAN'T SING. But all you are is mean."

Despite the few who haven't caught on yet and still believe that "kids hate reading," we all know that these days, reading is popular.
"I'm just like Belle from Beauty in the Beast, because I love books," teenage girls are saying, while teens of both genders are sitting down to enjoy things like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Eragon, Lord of the Rings and other more obscure titles.
This is just what we've been hoping for, isn't it? Kids and teens finally taking an interest in literature. It has finally become cool. They're thinking of themselves as rebels or nerds or hipsters, all of which are just new versions of the word cool.
Ah, finally people are spending their time having actual constructive hobbies.
...Or are they?
Here I am going to explore just how this isn't necessarily true; how sometimes your time can be better spent playing a good, mind-building video game or watching a wholesome, creative
Artistic SolipsismThe world has ended. Maybe it was an alien invasion, an astronomical catastrophe, the ever-popular zombie apocalypse, or some ironic twist involving irresponsible science and man's own hubris. It doesn't really matter. Perhaps it was a grinding decline like a torch starving in the night, or a fleeting blaze of cinematic glory. That doesn't matter either. All that matters is that somehow, I ended up being the last person on Earth.Artistic Solipsism3 years ago in Flash Fiction & Vignettes More Like This
I learned a lot mostly about survival, but I'll leave that for a later monologue. I found that in a strange way, I had never really existed. No, I haven't gone mad. At least, I don't think I have. Allow me to explain
My first move, reasonably enough, was to find a dwelling close to clean water and nonperishable food, which would buy me time before I had to venture out for more supplies. Soon after I settled, I found myself doing the oddest

She had always kept everything. Ticket stubs, receipts, the torn-off edges of notebook paper. Any doodles or scribbled ideas, and any note afforded her by a friend were kept and saved. Not everything received the honor, but particular things from specific events did. She wanted to keep track of each and every thing she had ever done. She did so, on a corkboard encircling her room from floor to ceiling; each day had its spot, and one could trace her life along the wall with the zigzagging strings of yarn that connected each day.
She didn't often invite others into her room, for fear they might displace something, either by accident or purpose. A fear of forgetting had encircled her heart, and she did this as her blatant struggle to hold on to everything. Thus, apart from the walls, her room was clean and ordered. Her bookshelf was neatly ordered (alphabetically, of course) and each bauble sat proudly in its place. Her c

Mary-Sue: Part 4In a FightMary-Sue: Part 43 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
From a petty cat fight with slaps and hair pulling, to an action-packed superhero vs. super villain brawl, action scenes can start anywhere; however writing them effectively is harder than planning on who wins. It isn’t just about writing down who hit who, and if you don’t describe how a character handles the situation, you can accidentally make him or her seem stronger or even weaker than they should be. If the character seems too powerful without explanation, your audience will point the finger and label it a Mary-Sue, and you don’t want that (unless you’re purposefully writing a parody). Action scenes, whether it’s important to the overall plot or not, are an effective tool to establish your characters’ strengths and weaknesses—weakness being just as essential to highlight, if not more so, than strengths, but first, you have to know how to write a fight scene in order to know where to insert thes
Warmth Between VampiresEver since she returned, she found that she had a really hard time sleeping. She would try as hard as she could, but sleep never came to her. This was not as much of a bother as most would think however, as she'd figured that she'd slept enough in her life. Several thousand years in fact. Serana of the Volkihar clan of vampires was lying in her rather sizeable bed, staring at the ceiling. To a vampire like her, the darkness of the still-early hours of the day were not a bother, for those like her could see very well. Every inch of her chambers was visible to her, as was every sound. All of these combined to keep her awake, not as though her own thoughts didn't do a good job of that already.Warmth Between Vampires1 year ago in Short Stories More Like This
So much had changed for her. It was not too long ago when she was not part of this world, but sealed away for many centuries, in a plan by her mother to keep her out of the clutches of her father. Endless years she'd slept a dreamless sleep in that tiny chamber, but to her, it had seemed like the pa

Mary-Sues: Part 3Mary-Sues: How Much Power is Too Much Power?Mary-Sues: Part 33 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
I’m sure everyone has heard that an obvious Mary-Sue is one that is too powerful, but no one has explained to me in enough detail when the line is crossed. “Oh, an original character can control all four elements? That’s way too powerful!” Since when? Since it became a clichéd idea? That idea was around since before Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Nickelodeon. Aang, the main character in that show, along with eventually mastering all four elements, also practically came back from the dead a century later in the very first episode of the show, and no one called him a Gary-Stu (which he is not, I’m just saying that labeling a character over power is overused)! As I said in my past two guides, Mary-Sues aren’t about clichés, they’re about lack of explanation and key details that would help in their development of the cha
The Parlour IncidentOne day in July, I believe it was, I found myself sitting with several acquaintances in Christopher's parlour. It was one of those deliciously lazy afternoons which only the summer in her full glory can bring. The room had a wan, listless light to it, relaxing the other guests and myself as we languidly chatted over tea and crumpets. The air was also sluggishly heavy, dulling the senses to a slowly-blended calm engendered by the heat of St. Othniel's southerly climate. The Parlour Incident3 years ago in Flash Fiction & Vignettes More Like This
At length, after much stimulating conversation, Christopher stood, producing a book of sheet music.
"What do you all say to a bit of music?" he asked.
"Certainly," I answered.
"Oh yes, please do darling!" Tabitha exclaimed, "he's quite the maestro."
Christopher laughed, shaking his head.
"Now, now love, I'd not go that far."
He strode over to the piano as the other guests urged him on. Ida entered the room bearing a merrily steaming teapot and more crumpets.
"More tea sirs?" she inquired, shooting sideways glances at her

The strange feeling came over the tigress Penumbra once again. Her paws tingled, her charcoal hair rose as if electrified, and her body felt faintly as if it were being constricted by the air around her. She flicked her ears in irritation, but she was too used to the phenomenon to express actual alarm. She didn't even bother to raise her head off of her single broad foreleg. The sensation would pass, as it always did, and she paid little mind to it.
It was the water leaking from the rusted pipe above her head that caught her interest, though. She had been absent-mindedly watching the pure water fall, drop by drop, from the peripherals of her vision. Now the rhythmic, predictable dripping slowed until it stopped. Then, in defiance of every law of fluid dynamics that Penumbra knew, the drops of water began to rise from the floor and slip back into the pipe. Penumbra stiffened and swivelled her head to watch.

Now, I have noticed that there seem to be a lot of design conflicts on the site regarding that someone has *le gasp!* copied your character. Oh, the humanity! How dare they?! How dare they also have a character set who are only black, white, and red because that makes them so deep and edgy. How dare their animal also have a star/heart/diamond on its forehead? How dare they make a character with rainbow legs/tails?! How dare they have a fursona with a "dark" side when they become enraged? How dare their sparkle fursona be black with lime green, hot pink, and cyan markings?! How. Fucking. Dare. They?!
So, you call them out on their obvious theft of your character, and then things get spicy. You get barraged by an army of white knights. You send your white knights after their white knights. Then, when all that is going on, you get a nice, big taste of "trolling" because you're all probably worked up and obsessi

"Very good, my student, you successfully blocked my attack." An old, cracked voice croaked through the air in the lush gorassy forest. The speaker was an old elfin man, voice full of praise for the young girl that stood in front of him. This was no usual girl, her visible eye was hazel, and the other hidden by the long purple bangs that hung over the left half of her face. She was unusually tall for a ten year old, like the man she was Elfin but her skin was pale blue. The girl was clad in a simple brown tunic and dark blue trousers. Armour covered her shoulders and her wrists were encased in armoured gauntlets.
"I am ready to have another go when you are, Eecon!" She growled, raising her Katana in front of herself defensively. Her chain mail skirt jingled as she shifted her pose.
"No, young one." Eecon smiled. "You are young and have trained enough for today. Go, get some rest."
The girl sighed and sheathed her Katana in the scabbard that hung on her back

1. People that stop in the middle of the hallways.
At our school, we have 5 minutes to switch classes. I would really appreciate it if the people wouldn't stop moving right in the middle of the hallway where no one can pass them, just because they want to hug their boyfriend/girlfriend. Seriously. I have somewhere I need to be.

I absolutely hate it when people hold open doors for me when I'm far away. It makes me feel like I have to run so that they don't just close the door and leave. Of course, I never do run up to the door because that would make me feel like an idiot. If I'm far away, just let me open the door myself.

A Walk to the FountainWhen I walk down the halls, I absolutely love the used feel to scene. The papers scattered on the floor towards the end of it. Perhaps someone's locker had spilled; perhaps someone just dropped their stuff and left it there. It's not like they were really going to need those papers anymore anyway. No matter was caused those vibrant orange, yellow, and pink papers to spread across the floor of the hall, giving the "school's-just-out" affect, it didn't concern me, so I just kept walking towards the water fountain.A Walk to the Fountain4 years ago in Stories & Vignettes More Like This
The hall was really a soiled grey. It almost feels like we go to a slum school where no one gives a shit toward learning; which is probably true. The blue navy lockers just down more on the lack of vibrancy. Even the few colors that are actually in the school make the hallway appear more burdened. The burgundy, mellow yellow and deep blue seem to mesh with the grey and blue lockers to give that "depressed" effect. No one, not even me, notices how sad these hallways appear when
