In Defense Of Making A Living Through ArtThere's a frustrating element I've noticed lately in regards to Art. "Art with a capital 'A'", as a friend of mine calls it. And I suppose this blog was triggered by the cancellation of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan game Fighting is Magic. The fandom lost its collective shit because Hasbro sent the developers a Cease and Desist letter. The entitlement was just amazing to watch, and even worse was the sheer ignorance. Some of it stupid, like "Technically, all fanworks are parodies, so it's not illegal!" and "Copyright laws are so stupid!" to cruel, like "They can just take their development overseas, then Hasbro can't stop them!"In Defense Of Making A Living Through Art2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was baffled by this. Because Hasbro had the right to protect their intellectual property.
See, I've been a freelance artist for a while now. And it's hard. It is so freaking hard, and part of the reason it's hard is because the default attitude of most people you deal with is, "We're not, like, going to pay you a lot. Or give you i

On Humor and Grittyness in Movies/Video GamesI'm getting really sick of the idea that the only good action movies or video games are ones where everything is all serious and dark. It's the whole "gritty" concept blown to extremes. But through all the countless games I've played and movies I've watched, I think that we could back off a bit from being too damn serious and have some fun once in a while. On Humor and Grittyness in Movies/Video Games2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Take the latest Die Hard movie as a prime example. From the start it's a dark, gritty, almost monochromatic movie with a 20 minute car chase sequence at the beginning so over-the-top that it's almost cartoony. But the way it's shot is atrocious and there's no character development what-so-ever that 40 minutes into the film I was looking at the clock wondering not only "when will this be over," but also "what the f*** did I just watch?"
Contrast that to something like Independence Day. People like to rag on Independence Day because it's so "goofy" and "absurd." But what helps the film is that we're given time to enjoy the characters s

"Anatomy for the Artist" by Sarah Simblet
"The Artist's Guide to Animal Anatomy" by Bammes Gottfried
Books that are good:
" Drawing the Head and Hands" by Andrew Loomis
"Figure Drawing for all it's Worth" also by Andrew Loomis
Books that are ok but from the time perspective I do not recommend them:
"How to Draw Heads and Portraits" by Jose M. Parramon
"Human Figure" by Jose M. Parramon
Books that are pure unrefined shit and should be burned on sight:

Once a person has caught one kiriban, they aren't allowed to catch one again.
Note me when you catch my kiriban. I won't accept front page comments. Only one people can catch it. First come first serve.the iron rule - that final one - To myself. That is because I tend to be too lenient and I would like to make art for everyone e

ADAM LAMBERT LIVE IN SINGAPOREI pride myself on being an "old soul" when it comes to music taste. As a kid I was raised on classical greats like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, and the list goes on by my dad. My mom weaned my sister and I on goldies like ABBA, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, and Boney M. I listen to copious amounts of 70s and 80s bands that make me look like a bit of a dweeb to my classmates, ranging anywhere from Alice Cooper, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Joan Jett through to Adam Ant and Dead or Alive. As a result, I'm heavily biased against what I call the "mainstream crap on MTV".ADAM LAMBERT LIVE IN SINGAPORE2 years ago in Personal More Like This

I'm really growing tired of the gaming industry and gamers in general. Am I the only one who sees a paradox in gamers wanting and demanding that gaming be taken seriously as a media, while demanding that the very people (journalists) who are actually critical and deliberately ARE trying to take gaming seriously to toe the line and praise the shit out of every game and give them all 10 stars out of 10 or else?
Most recently The Escapist gave GTA5 a 3.5 out of 4 stars and the internet freaked out because it wasn't a perfect score. Before that Polygon got heat for giving Dragon's Crown a 6.5 out of 10. And before that both Polygon and NowGamer got heat for giving The Last of Us a 7.5 and a 8.5 out of 10. Gamers freak out because they want EVERY journalist to give EVERY game a perfect 10, especially those they've already determined will be amazing games (like GTA5). But at the same time they bitch and moan if a game comes under any sor

My ApologiesHello all,My Apologies2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Let me begin by first apologizing to those of you who have left me notes, comments, or questions over the past few weeks. I have been absent for DA for an extended period of time due to real life priorities, and the stress doesn't look as though it is about to relent. While I will try to get back on top of my deviations and replies here, it will be slow-going and I can't promise to be around regularly.
As well as rushing to meet deadlines for my animation, I have also been organizing and setting up the LASALLE Show with my classmates, and as class representative for 2D animation I have been required to make a daily appearance at my college. The LASALLE Show doubles as a showcase to display the best works amongst the different faculties of the college, as well as being a graduation show for those of us in the 3rd year, which I am. Honour Amongst Thieves has received a special display right at the entrance to the animation gallery, and I was occupied for the bett
Artist Intent vs Fan CriticismsThis has been a subject I've been interested in for years, and one which I personally struggle with on a near constant basis: Artist's intent versus fan criticisms. Before we begin I just want to make this clear that this journal is NOT about "ignoring criticisms" or any sort of endorsement of such an action. I'm gonna be accused of it, of course, but I just wanted to get that out of the way right now.Artist Intent vs Fan Criticisms2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I've been observing fan interactions over the years I've noticed a severe increase in a sense of entitlement: IE: that if you love something enough you have a "right" to force the creators to change their content to suit your personal preferences. We saw this play out to the extremes this past summer with the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, and we see it play out to a much lesser extent here on DA quite a bit.
Artists need feedback and criticisms to grow and improve their work, but at what point does it move beyond offering suggestions to help an artist improve to outright de

5 Things No One Seems To Know About FanfictionIt's been a while since I dared to broach the subject of fanfiction, but some recent discussions about its merits have driven me to the keyboard yet again. Maybe I'm just a natural curmudgeon, who gets her jollies stomping on other people's idea about art. Maybe it's the indignant fire in me being banked by phrases like "Do NOT redistribute, claim, copy, edit or use it in any way" on fanworks and people saying things like "That's someone's creative work, man!" in reference to said fanworks. Maybe it's because I fiercely believe that we don't need new excuses to lower ourselves to ever greater levels of mediocrity. Or maybe it's just because I like making fun of people whose best contribution in the creative sense is somebody else's far more successful idea.5 Things No One Seems To Know About Fanfiction2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Fanworks are derivative works. This is the big one. Holy crap, no one anywhere on the Internet seems to have any idea what the hell this means. First of all, fanfiction and fanart are not "creative works." Creative work i
Hacker Alert (Read, No Panic - ended)Hey guys; this is just a small warning - there's currently a hacker group going around on dART that steals your login info by using already hacked accounts. Simply, by use of coding, this group has changed the url path of several accounts (one of their tricks is by posting a comment on your works, claiming it has been stolen, followed by a link), so that when you go to visit their profile page, you are instead redirected to what seems to be the dART login page. But it's not! If you take a look at the url, you will see that it's in fact not a dART url at all. These are linked on the blank application deviations and the user guide in particular has a run down on how to make a proper app.
We're still seeing a lot of people breaking the rules and just not reading the user guide. A lot of members are adding accessories to their temp. apps, starting with 2 1st stage evolved pokemon, or adding more stat points than the maximum of 12.
Since the updated apps will be out soon after the 12th, I ask that you take a look at your teams before the first event if possible.
1) A team may start with a maximum of 2 pokemon. This can consist of 2 basic stage (un-evolved like Jigglypuff or Abra. Baby pokemon count as basic stage too) or 1 basic stage and 1 1st stage (eg: Jigglypuff and Kadabra)
2nd stage Pokemon like Flygon or Charizard are not allowed as starting team members!
2) No accessories are allowed yet. Please keep the accessory slots blank. You w

The art's a little old, and it's only half-way colored, but with a few tweaks in the dialogue here and there and Photoshop tricks to fix some awkward lineart, I think I might be able to salvage it. I drew it years ago as the sequel to the last Neopet series I drew, about Virtupets shenanigans as Sloth's personal coffee slave, and features my Jetsam Nachtenfeldudu more prominently.
Now I'm excited to finish it up. One more reason to rush that essay ...

I care about all of you, and I just want to give a little advice.
You need to think for yourselves and not believe what other people tell you. Yes, that includes me as well, but I still want to speak this out.
There are people that will go through such lengths to cause others agony, by spreading rumors and lies.
You need to not judge a book by its cover, you need to learn both sides of the stories before picking a side. There are people that will do anything to gain attention, you just need to really think, who is in the right in this situation, and who is in the wrong.
Like if someone you like posted a journal disliking some artist/animator that you may know about; giving their opinion on why they dislike that artist, that they don't deserve this and so forth. You don't have to feel that way just because they do.
I've noticed in many journals, people turn on their own inspirations, because anoth
Style. For me it's all about drumming up feelings. Those feelings I got when I first discovered comic books and comic book magazines like Savage Sword of Conan, Eerie and other Warren publications. It was a strange, mysterious black and white world. I didn't know what was next. It's hard to explain. I would turn the page and discover a new style, a new way of looking at drawing. As much as I loved the House Styles of Marvel and DC Comics - I also fell in love with the work of those famous late 60's, 70's and early 80's illustrators that weren't doing superhero comics.Style.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
