Copying artwork then selling it for profitnote: Please, if you're going to debate, be courteous and have basic manners, and not turn this into a typical internet argument.Copying artwork then selling it for profit4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I'll probably delete this if this blows up badly, since I just want to iterate this one thing; so please, be courteous.
I didn't think I needed to address this at all, actually, but here we are. Please also note, I'm not here to debate with you (edit: Unless you have read all of this very carefully and not just skimmed it like some of you debaters are doing). If you think that it's okay to copy or redraw and then sell the copied art, that's great, please take it up in your own journal or maybe even the forums; i'm sure you'll find a lot of people to debate with there . There's been drama a'brewin' somewhere, don't bring it here, because my issue isn't with the artist in question anymore (for the most part...), but rather with the fans (some who are decent artists themselves so i'm more baffled about that) who think tha
How to avoid a creative block / find your styleI have been thinking about this a lot over the years. And have also been asked these questions quite often. Mostly by beginners and a pro here and thereHow to avoid a creative block / find your style3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here's what i came up with
If you have a creative block - don't know what to make, have no ideas, are tempted to borrow somebody else's design or redo your own - try this:
- listen to your favorite song and recreate it. translate the sounds, the dynamic, distortions etc. into shapes, colors, textures. listen to the song 50 times if necessary. it can be done and you can do it!
- translate another piece of art into jewelry - go to a museum, browse through photos and paintings on dA, google couture dresses, whatever you like (just not jewelry). find one that you love and make your own smashing piece of jewelry!
- limit yourself with shape or color or materials:
a) pick a shape and make 3 completely different pieces of jewelry based on that shape. use whatever colors and materials you like
b) make 3 completely different pi
tiny revolutionsso last summer i went to a writing camp.tiny revolutions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
it was quite small. i think the organisation that put it together usually just attracts a lot of kids with eager pushy parents and then as the age groups get older the camps get smaller and far less frequent. there were only two groups with kids my age and we had - let's see, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8... - somewhere around 8-12 people in my group. it was two weeks long, a few hours a day, bright and early in august mornings. i'm not a morning person. this did not please me. but waking up for things like this feel much easier and better than waking up for school so i'd take it over that any day.
anyway, it was split into two sections with two different teachers - an hour and a half for prose, and an hour and a half for poetry.
prose was first. the teacher was a young, blonde, and sheepish girl in her first couple years as a professor at some small junior college. the class, if you could call it that, was a joke. she was much more cut out to be une institut
Far OffI'm so far off from so many things in my life. I'm so far off from being where I want to be. I'm so far off from being who I want to be. I'm so far off from having my shit together, emotionally, physically, financially, and artistically. I'm so far off from finding the love of my life. I'm so far off from feeling mature enough to take care of children. I'm so far off from feeling mature enough to take care of myself. I'm so far off from liking who I am. I'm so far off from liking who's around me. And what scares me most about all of these things, is not how far away they are, but how close they really might be.Far Off2 years ago in Personal More Like This
DDs: Suggester's frustrationsWelcome to a new journal in this mini series about Daily Deviations. In the first one I let you know about what I think DDs represent, and then about some of my personal criteria to select them.DDs: Suggester's frustrations3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Now is time to focus on the suggesters. Those amazing (almost always human) beings who take a moment of their lives to go the extra mile when finding an amazing deviation and suggest it for consideration as a Daily Deviation. Ya know? I wouldn't be able to feature so many amazing art on my own! So before anything else, I want to take a moment to thank all the amazing people who suggest. Thank you guys!
As a person who also suggests DDs once in a while, I do understand the frustration suggesters often get. So I would like in this occasion to explain some of the reasons why th

Anybody see the latest My Little Pony episode? Holy hell... they actually had "derpy hooves" in the episode and Rainbowdash herself SAYS her name is "Derpy." Even if you don't like MLP:FiM, the fact that the creators of the series went so far as to take a fan created character (fan created in the sense that fans named a unintended background character mistake), use her fan given name (which happened to be meme-tastic) and not only acknowledge it but to actually PUT it into an episode like that... wow. I have a feeling this is kinda the next step of fanbase and media building. And it's awesome! So yeah... "Derpy Hooves" is 100% legit now.
Been watching a lot of minecraft tutorials on mechanisms and machines. Some of them are absolutely insane, and some of them are actually practical. I would very much like to build a "stronghold" in my world which is completely enemy defense proof. Automatic drawbrid
Why are most designers male?As a foreword I should note that the following is unresearched opinion. Why are most designers male?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Recently I've thought a bit about my particular industry (design, visual communication, branding, etc) and why it is the way it is. One of the aspects I've been hung-up on for a while has been the strangely overwhelming quantity of male designers vs female designers. Why are most of them male?
It's not a talent issue
My first thought was, are males simply more artistically inclined than females? Because design is so much about the visually communicative element, one might assume that if males tend to be more artistically inclined than females, then it would make sense that more males tend to naturally want to design things. But I don't think that's it at all. If you simply look at a statistic from deviantART itself, you'll find that we have an almost even split of males and females as active members.
It's not organizational
Much of design is actually just organizing information. Wh

[Featured Skin] Rainsweeper[Featured Skin] Rainsweeper3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Rainsweeper by Kaelri is another leap in making Rainmeter do things that no one ever thought possible. Through the use of a clever Lua script Rainsweeper is a clone of the classic Minesweeper game. The ingenious design allows for many features including a GUI options editor, saved high scores, and it has no images or other resource files making it light as it can be.
Thanks for the hard work on another amazing skin!
1M Downloads & GithubThis day marks a special milestone of achievement for the developers of Omnimo. A humble project that started almost two years ago reached one million downloads today. Most of you probably don't know that this project was supposed to be much smaller. When I came up with the early concept in the middle of March, I intended it to have approximately 12 panels and several text items.1M Downloads & Github3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Omnimo: The Beginning
Nothing more. However, shortly after the concept, Xyrfo joined the project. And with our combined passion and ambition, as well as with some help from others, we managed to create the biggest Rainmeter suite ever. Xyrfo did some amazing stuff for the project. Things without which it would just remain but a dream of a madman. But he did it! For that, he deserves no less recognition than I do.
And of course, we would like to thank the community for all the support! You guys are awesome! Nothing motivates doing a project better than to see people use and enjoy the product. W

I have just recently received the opportunity to become the "Science Fiction and Space Art" Community Volunteer Gallery Moderator here on deviantART.
I am looking for "Science Fiction and Space Art" deviations to feature as Daily Deviations, and you can help.
If you know of any submissions that you think should gain more exposure and be Featured as a Daily Deviation,
and they are "Science Fiction and/or Space Art"related, send me a DD Suggestion via note.
I have info on my front page regarding how to suggest a DD if you have any questions.
I would prefer suggestions for artists that have less exposure and little to no previous DD's,
but I am not against awarding a Daily Deviation to worthy art from a more well known and decorated artist.
I simply want to try to focus on putting a spotlight on lesser known artists that have amazing art to share, so that their work ma

deviantART and Journal spam: what we're doing!Spam is a constant thorn in the side of every Internet user's daily life. From the mundane to the surreal, these emails appear in our inboxes so frequently, messages from South African attorneys offering $10 million dollars get marked as spam without a second thought to savvy users.deviantART and Journal spam: what we're doing!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
We define spam as the misuse of communication systems to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately to our deviants. Typically, the content of spam messages is aimed at advertising a product that is often counterfeit or potentially malicious. With the rise of social networking, there's been an increase in more direct spamming -- companies who directly target your social network profiles.
"Over the last few years, deviantART has had a small but unfortunate stream of such abuse. Usually, it’s as easy as banning the offending members and moving on to more pressing problems, but recently something happened that caused us to re-evaluate how we handle spam issues."
Skin of the What? After some discussion we have decided to bring back Skin of theSkin of the What?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
QuarterSeason. This is a reincarnation of our old Skin of the Month contests, just a bit more spread out.
The plan so far is to have a one month nomination period after each quarter of the year. We will only be accepting nominations of skins that were submitted to DeviantArt within that quarter of the year. We're hoping this will encourage the creation of new skins. Because of a limitation to the number of items we can place on a single pole, we the moderators reserve the right to whittle down the competition before voting.
After nominations are closed we will have one week of voting. There may even be a prize for the winner.
As of this blog the rules are as follows:
A Skin of the
QuarterSeason must be released during the time period of the poll.
There is a technical limit of 10 suggestions per poll. Suggestions exceeding this limit may be decided upon by the moderators.
You cannot sugge

We're back at Comic-Con!
Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-C

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through dA,
Not a troll was stirring, nor Grinch in his sleigh.
Deviations were hung in digital Galleries with care,
In hopes that +Favourites soon would be there.
The n00bs were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Daily Deviations danced in their heads.
And Fella in his 'kerchief, and spyed with his night-light,
Had just settled down to log-off for the night,
When over in the Forums there arose such a clatter,
Fella sprang back online to see what was the matter.
To the browser window he flew like a flash,
Tore open the tabs and refreshed the cache.
When what to his art-loving eyes should appear,
But an animated sleigh and eight commissioned reindeer,
With a little old driver, so creative and slick,
Fella knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than broadband, his reindeer were famed,
After all his favorite art

We believe that this feature adds more context to the experience of viewing artwork on deviantART. You'll now find comment counts underneath the thumbnails of deviations -- they can be seen when browsing or searching art, and also display in your Message Center.
