A NEW art school- a few thoughtsHey everyone. I've been thinking a lot about art schools and how we learn as artists. So much so, that I'm at the point where I think I want to start an "online art school". Why the quotation marks? Because I'm still not sure if "School" is the right word for this new website I want to create. Without giving out much information because this is all a bit early, I want to talk about the motivations and goals we're trying to address with this future site. I said "we" on purpose. I have a business partner in this and his background is in creating online education (not artistic) schools from the I.T. side of things. Thank goodness also, because I know nothing about that side of things.A NEW art school- a few thoughts10 months ago in Personal More Like This
I guess you could say things started when I wrote my first book, "Creating Characters with Personality". While there are many, many drawings I would love to redraw for that book, I still like that book and get great responses from it because of one thing: the viewpoint I chose on that book was to

Or: How Spec-Lit Fucked Up A Perfectly Good Word.
Punk 'til you puke!
As a youth revolution punk was a solid fist full of fuck you! An angry, ugly, straight razor attack on the bloated excess of 1970's pop culture.
There was punk rock music from the likes of The Sex Pistols, Black Flag, and The Dead Kennedys.
There was punk cinema in films such as Repoman, Suburbia, and The Fabulous Stains.
There was punk lit, punk art, even a punk offshoot of gonzo journalism.
It was a way of life fueled by a belief that nothing is sacred, authority is never to be trusted, and most importantly, you can always Do It Yourself...better known as the DIY ethos.
In a word, punk is rebellion.
And I know a bit about words. Word have power. Word have strength. Words are the bits of
On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo

So sorry to everyone who did enter! We really appreciated it.
WELL it looks like it's that time to hold a super radical contest!
The contest will be for designing this account a mascot! (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧ Now obviously since our user name is KittenSkulls(boutique) I figure a design that pertains to that would be rad, but please keep in mind it doesn't have to be!
As long as your creative about your design, you'll be just fine with whatever you come up with! We just beg of you, please, please do not make it a cat with a simple skeleton design. We want it to be original! (That doesn't mean it can't have anything to do with skeletons, just as long as it isn't the cliche skeleton animal.)
So here are the rules:

Soul Drinkers and Imperial Guards! So today I received a treat in my facebook inbox from old colleague and now-kickass GW artist, Kevin "Kingmong" Chin: http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/Art_and_Soul.htmlSoul Drinkers and Imperial Guards!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Right now, I'm still awaiting a response from the Black Librarians to see if I am allowed to post some higher-res versions of my 3 Soul Drinkers covers here on DA. Till then, this is all they have up on their blog and all I have to show for, for now! For you Soul Drinkers fans out there, I was told not to reference any notable characters of the SD lore and come up with my own designs.
The general brief for the 3 covers was to have a tactical space marine, a captain, and lastly a dreadnought (being awoken). I thought it would be a neat idea to compose all the covers from a similar worms eye angle, not just for theatrics but rather to literally show the life cycle of a Space Marine as he fights and rises through the ranks, leading his brethren and eventually being entombed within a dreadnought to continue his tireless fig

I have amazing news for everyone...I am not longer depressed. In fact, I a, quite happy. My depression is gone, and I feel amazing.I have amazing news for everyone...7 months ago in Personal More Like This
One single word change everything for me. I went from being super depressed and just wanting to die one moment, and the next I was so happy like you would not believe.
What was this incredibly powerful word?
The word is "Maybe"
It gave me a tiny bit of hope, and from that hope came happiness, and it grew from there until it pushed out all the sadness and depression.
Going from "There is no chance at all, ever" to "there is a possible chance" is the best thing ever.
Right now, I am unbelievably happy. It feels so amazing to not be constantly sad and depressed. This huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
The person I have to thank for this is none other than :iconstartenshi: who is THE most amazing person you will ever meet. So, please go watch her, go fave all of her amazing deviations. She is like four times as amazing as I am. She is a freaking panda contortionist for crying out lou

Attention please also read: Submission Guidelines and Credit Guidelines
Criteria. That word is used a lot here at digital-artists, so let's talk about it.
The ever mysterious Criteria in our group. The bane to those of who have tried to submit, yet only left with a decline message signed "Criteria". As mysterious as the Whitechapel note signed "From Hell"
Ever present yet unobtainable, like some secret code written of the Illuminati.
Not quite... but a few have blown this criteria up to mythical urban legend proportions, and we need to deflate it a bit.
We have had a lot of questions about this ever elusive and undefinable "Criteria" and for good reason, we never told anyone what it was. We never gave anyone a proper explanation of it in regards to the group submissions. It
What Not to Do When Making CharactersHere's one thing I noticed with a person here on dA who has a nasty habit when it comes to her characters. What Not to Do When Making Characters2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Oh ho, but not just once or twice, which is the ok, or so, amount. But several times. I'll pop over and see that she's changed the name once again out of a previous 30 times. I kid you not. I haven't actually been counting but I estimate the number of name changes for a single character to be at least 30.
So here's why you shouldn't constantly change the name of your character:
1. It really shows how little one, as the creator, knows about your own character. The name is one of the first things thought of and finalized about a character and constantly changing it decreases the effect of the character itself. So rather than just constantly changing the names once you find one that you think it cooler - rather than one that actually fits to the character - compile a list of names and eventually shorten it down. Personally, that's how I choose names. I pick a bunch tha

History about Dzhay (Robo-Doggy).
Believe it or not, but it is true.
No one knew, that it is going to happen and many people are ready to quit. But no. Today we are going to talk about Robo-Doggy or Dzhay. Her real name is Zabelina Ylia Alekseevna ( we are not sure about her second name )
Here is her DA :iconRobo-doggy:
She changed her account many times and became famous by her "not nice actions". Usually, you could «feel" her high self-importance and hear "intelligent idle talk". Her last act made her even more famous. It was an abandon. She abandoned a girl, named Ekaterina Deminova.
This story might shock you. All evidences is here, in the text (!).
Firstly this girl appeared at DA with crooked copying (actually, she took fotos and altered them on her own). Of course she deleted everything that could "spoil" her reputation 'cause hordes of painters spammed her page everyday. Her "drawings" and her first pa

How to Make 2D Tile sets for games Part 1 + MoreHey everyone! How to Make 2D Tile sets for games Part 1 + More9 months ago in Personal More Like This
I just uploaded a new tutorial, the first in the series, all about making 2D tiles and tile sets for games!
Things covered in this episode:
- The anatomy of a basic tileset
- Setting up and using Photoshop's grid system for making tiles
- Using Photoshop's Offset filter to make tiles seamless
- Adapting a tiling texture into a tileset
- Some results of a finished basic tileset
- Thoughts and some opinions!
- I forgot to master the audio. Sorry if I sound just a tad muffly!
Also recently uploaded by Tyler Edlin, this video about perspective drawing where I also have a segment about how to make perspective grids in Photoshop!
By the way, have you been paying attention to my tumblr? I post stuff like this more often there, as I only see my DA journal as a means to communicate about mo
