How to not get 'trolled'This is basically what passed through my mind when I saw a journal about the same subject in the journal portal lately. I thought it was a joke but sadly not. This is not a guide but a hit-me-in-the-face-common-sense statement.
This is based on my *insert how many years the internet has been around for* years experience in different online communities.
Doing nothing 'bad' won't change anything
You will avoid making forum threads when you're new?
You will avoid starting arguments?
You will keep your political agenda and religion to yourself?
What next? How about not uploading anything in case a big meanie troll comes? How about not commenting anywhere in case the big meanie troll sees it?
Whatever you do, wherever you do it, face it-this is the internet. You'll see a few trolls here and there. How about ignoring them or...

It's a tough topic and one that most of us like to shy away from rather than embrace, but the honest truth is that the shots of people that you get - the best kind - are the ones that are candid, journalistic or spontaneous. That usually means asking permission afterwards, or not asking permission at all - which can appear quite odd, to some. One of my biggest concerns and anxieties is having my camera out in public. I recently went to a beach, of all places, and was shooting the coastline when a horrible feeling crept over me and I realised that there were lots of people around and that I was invading, a little bit, on their privacy. These guidelines are useful for shooting on the street, at public gatherings and events and at more formal occasions such as weddings.
If the person is going to be the main subject of your photo - then it's kind to ask permission, get perm
People + Portraits: TroubleshootingBack at the beginning of this week we opened up a photography troubleshooting blog and had lots of queries to answer and work through. Some of them require lengthy replies so keep an eye on communityrelations this coming week for fuller articles. About hackers on DA and what you can do"Hacker alerts" are pretty common around DA and it has been for a long time. Journals warning you that there is a hacker loose at DA and will hack your account if you don't copy the journal and re-post it.About hackers on DA and what you can do3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Some variations can be: "There is a hacker that will block all your friends, leave nasty comments on other's profiles, will deactivate your account, will get you in trouble with the staff, etc." another could be "Don't watch *insert deviant's name here* because they will give you a virus if you do" there are a lot more variations, but you get the idea. These journals always end with something like "If you read this warning, spread the word and share it with your friends so they won't be the hacker's next victim!"
I know, reading something like this can feel terrifying and you might feel compelled to spread the word, you don't want you friends to be a victim of this terrible hacker!
I know people re-post these journals with good intentions, trying to warn others about this supposed ha
Asking for PointsEvery now and then, someone I don't know posts a comment on my profile page asking me to give them Points. Very occasionally, the request is of an I'm collecting for a Premium Membership/print/whatever and was wondering if you wouldn't mind donating a few Points to help me reach my goal nature but more often than not, it's just Will you give me Points? or something to that effect. I've actually had one comment saying simply POINTS PLEASE.Asking for Points3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
To be honest, when it's the first type of request and it isn't just a copy-pasta to a hundred people, I'll consider it. I like to help people have a better dA experience and not everyone can afford to buy a Premium Membership, so if someone asks really nicely for a bit of assistance, I'm usually happy to help if I can. But when it's the second kind of request, it's just rude. Asking strangers to give you things isn't polite, and it's even worse when you can't be bothered to explain why you're asking someone to give you something t

Welcome to Feedback Week! This week is being brought to you by a team of very devious deviants over at FeedbackFrenzy.
In January of this year, the marvelous BeccaJS led a Critique Week in which we learned about many of the critique groups here on deviantART and also the essentials of giving and receiving critique for various media. In case you missed it, here are a few of the fantastic articles that were shared that week:

PE Prose Basics: Revise and EditProse Basics Week is winding down now and hopefully you've learned a lot from the brilliant past articles. But, there's more to writing than just getting that first draft done, isn't there? That's where the next big crucial step comes in: revision.PE Prose Basics: Revise and Edit2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
The Art of Revising:
Revision is such a huge topic to cover, especially since there are many ways to go about it. You can do self-edits, which always are a good first step, or you can get outside revisions from peers. Both are good ideas to really get your work to be top notch. But, the big thing to remember is that there's more to just editing your work than cleaning up a few spelling and grammar mistakes. Revising also includes corrections to sentence flow, scenes, and sometimes overall plot. So, before we jump into some ways to edit, here are a few different terms of methods of editing that may be handy to know-- especially if you're asking a peer to help you with revisions.
PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

PE: Tolerance Towards Daily DeviationsIf you're like me, one of the first things you do every morning is turn on the computer to check the DDs for the day, if you make this a habit sooner or later you'll see something featured that you won't like at all, making you spill your morning coffee all over the screen.PE: Tolerance Towards Daily Deviations3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Oh the crime! That poor coffee going to waste.
Before you hit the Caps Lock button and begin an essay about the drop of quality of DDs, stop. Take a deep breath, maybe walk around for a bit to cool down, and think about what you're going to do. To begin with, complaining about the DD leaving a comment is extremely disrespectful for the artist because most of the time, they didn't even ask to be featured. Instead, take a moment to consider why was it picked, DDs are chosen for far more than just being visually attractive, as the article Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend explained; we often look f
Getting the Most out of dA: CommentingUsually, when you read something involving 'Commenting', you think of deviations and the commenting platform that allows other members of the community to voice their thoughts and opinions on the art shown. However, what is pretty evident, and something that most of us may forget, is that deviantART runs on the ability to give and get comments, be it on pieces of artwork, our profile pages, forums, and everywhere else in between.Getting the Most out of dA: Commenting3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
In a sense, without the ability to give and get comments, deviantART wouldn't be much of a website, much less #1 of online art communities around. Comments are not solely the cause of what makes deviantART what it is, but it has a huge impact on a lot of things. By giving and getting comments, not only do we interact with other members to really make this a community, we also have the ability to get our voices heard.
It's quite an odd concept with us all facing screens, typing out our thoughts and opinions, but one thing we shouldn't forget is that commen
Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 20123 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

Prose Basics: What is Voice, Anyway? At this point, you've all had awesomesauce articles on word choice, varying sentences, dialect, and dialogue. Which is great, because it cuts my job down to five minutes of nattering on about how you bring all these elements together to create that elusive thing people always go on about: VOICE.Prose Basics: What is Voice, Anyway?2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Voice is the personality of the book.
You know that thing about avoiding cliché except every single plotline ever has been done and has the TVTropes article to prove it and OH GODS WHY?!?!
Voice solves 97% of that. It lends originality to your story by tossing a filter over the whole thing. 'The Shining' needed that kid-voice so readers could stare in horror over his shoulder, understanding things like the dark cloud of suicide in his father's head without having his reaction ruin half a page of ominous build. We've made two major changes to film on deviantART! First, film is now fully compatible with Sta.sh and the Sta.sh submission process, allowing you to store and post film deviations directly from your Sta.sh. Secondly, the film player has been overhauled, and the film deviation page has been updated and rebuilt to match the same layout other deviations have, for consistency, ease of use, and better overall appearance.

Self Harm Awareness day 1st March 2012Self Harm Awareness day 1st March 20123 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Today marks an awareness day over a subject that can mean many things to many people. Self Harm (or Self Injury) is the act of physical damage to oneself, usually as a coping strategy for expressing deep distress or coping in difficult situations. Self harm commonly is associated with cutting, but can also refer to any physical damage to the self including burning, hitting, taking overdoses, swallowing chemicals, bleaching, hair pulling ( trichotilliomania), scratching and so forth.
You may know what it is, but it is often the reasons why that people are not familiar with. There is still this belief and stereotype surrounding the type of person likely to harming them-self, but the truth is, it could be anyone no matter what gender, culture or age. The reasons behind self harm can be such a huge variety- different people cope in different ways with different distresses. Such issues that may trigger self harm might be bullying, t

I've been asked about this recently, so thought I'd write about it just in case someone else might relate or find it encouraging.
A lot of people are surprised to hear that I have only been painting since 2011. Well, it's true . I had coloured a few line arts here and there before that, but I never really tried at painting. I was dabbling and just slapping on colour, not bothering to figure out the programs or anything. Because I truly didn't believe I could do it.
Backing up a bit, I'm someone who was a traditional artist. I have been drawing with pencils and paper since I was just a little tyke. Naturally, I wanted everything to do with art in school. :iconhandsomeonionplz:

Today marks a very special day for someone, and since this someone is our wonderful team leader, $Moonbeam13, we wanted to write a journal to say...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIE!
Now a lot of you know Danie as the big chief of the Community Relations team, but I doubt half of you truly know how much of a hard worker Danie is. Not only does she have to look after us lively lot (and by “lot” have you seen how big the CV team is?!), but she works on copious behind the scenes projects on deviantART, making this place just a little bit more devious and better for all us Artists out there in the big dA community. Not only this, but she has to have a life at the same time!
Now we have decided to use Danie’s birthday for three things:
1. To wish her a very happy birthday (of course)

Project Educate: Expressing and EmotingEssentially, these are mostly the same thing with a few minor differences which are explained below. But before we move onto that, there's an important message to share when it comes to categorising your work. To get the best out of the photography galleries it's vitally important that you categorise your work properly. That' why these weeks exist in some respects, to help educate you through that. With regards to Daily Deviations - Community Volunteers will not give features to pieces of work that are mis-categorised. They might assist you by moving your work or explaining where it should go, but seeing a deliberate miscat is a bit off-putting when it comes to choosing pieces to showcase. Take some time to have a look through your gallery (I'm going to do the same!) and figure out if everything is in the right place. If you're struggling, just ask. We're here to help. What we won't do is rearrange your whole gallery for you. We will however, work with you to try and straighten thingsProject Educate: Expressing and Emoting3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
