Working @ UbisoftNot even kidding, though my contract is only for two months so far. I was offered a unique opportunity to work alongside experts in the industry, and was recruited for concept art, illustration, and storyboarding, bouncing around to see where I might fit with my toony style. It's only been day one so far, but I'm working right alongside professionals and get to learn from them first-hand. Pretty sure I'm still reeling. Obviously I can't tell you what we're working on due to confidentiality agreements, but it's pretty cool to see all the behind-the-scenes action my own self.Working @ Ubisoft11 months ago in Personal More Like This
Unfortunately, this does mean a significant stall in my (slow) progress on HAT, my animation-to-be. While working at LASALLE I literally spent every minute animating if I wasn't busy assisting teachers; now the only time I'll have to work on it will be when I get home, and on the weekends. Finishing the illustrations for Voltaire's upcoming children's book
Honour Amongst Thieves ... Podcast?Let it never be said that Sak doesn't deliver!Honour Amongst Thieves ... Podcast?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Last Sunday I had a Skype meeting with Brendan Julian and Richard Johnston - the voices of Louis and James respectively from my upcoming animation - to discuss the finer points of Honour Amongst Thieves. As promised, I managed to record it and so without further ado, I present to you:
Honour Amongst Thieves
I was delighted to see the two of them got along so well, because their character interaction promises to be great this way. Unfortunately, Santiago's VA was unable to make it due to timezones, but perhaps sometime in future we'll be able to repeat this again plus one Spaniard!

For those asking, I'm animating directly into the computer using a Wacom tablet. The animation program I'm using is TVPaint Animation 10 Pro. Super expensive so I use the school computers, but it's like the illegitimate love-child between Photoshop and Adobe After Effects without Flash's niggling tendencies to crash every ten minutes. That program is sex. <3
Life Update - HAT News, etc.Hullo my fellow Deviants,Life Update - HAT News, etc.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
It's about that time for a new journal entry, as a lot has happened since last I was seen lurking about this site. I have new Honour Amongst Thieves Questions and Answers podcasts, Amnesia videos, and photos, as well as news on my current job(s), and the results of :iconredeaddie:'s fantastic Louis cosplay. So how about I just start from the beginning?
Brendan Julian was over in Singapore for three weeks towards the end of my summer break, which was responsible for most of my absence. For those who don't yet know, he is the voice for Louis Despatis in my (as of yet) unfinished animation. Much fun was had. As well as dragging him all over the island and introducing him to all manner of wild and weird Asian cuisine, we also spent a lot of time at Universal Studios, Singapore, with my LASALLE besties for Livia's birthday. Brendan got to hug Reese's Pieces
Shisha Pipes at Three A.M. ...There's nothing quite like sitting back on pillows in a dim room with painted murals and UV lights discussing the problems of the world and how we can change the future for the better through the aromatic smoke of several shisha pipes with complete strangers. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone.Shisha Pipes at Three A.M. ...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I feel like I can change the world. Maybe not in big ways, but in small, baby steps. I want to finish this animation, I want to get my message out. I want to make a graphic novel that underlines current issues through the eyes of my characters; I want to make a difference. I feel justified in knowing I'm not the only one who thinks like this.
I want to change the world.
... Damn, this sounded so much better in my head at 3a.m. in the cafe toilets when I thought of it.
Want to Work in the Industry?:iconbobbie-the-jean: made a very good journal entry where she briefly discusses what to expect in the film industry, and I thoroughly recommend reading it to familiarize yourself with what it's like:Want to Work in the Industry?10 months ago in Personal More Like This
I also recommend following her link to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lcB9u-9mVE&feature=youtu.be which really drives home some of the issues with the demographic for artists/VFX in the world right now. As an animation graduate we are made aware of these discrepancies while still at college, and the hefty workloads and looming deadlines with zero compensation and lack of sleep could be considered a precursor to what we could expect in future.
A lot of people still seem to have rose-coloured glasses over their eyes in regards to what it must be like to be a "good artist" hired in the industry; this is the reality of it. You have to take the good with the bad, there are no guarantees, and you really, really have to love what you're doing.
Warm Bodies ...Warm Bodies ...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Watch it. Seriously.
I just got back from the cinemas, where I caught Warm Bodies with my bestie from LASALLE. I know what you're thinking, that the movie didn't look that great. Yet another zombie movie amongst the throngs of supernatural the media flings at us, yet another teenage romance to appeal to every young adult with a pulse. And I will be the first to admit that when I first heard the outline of the story - a cute young man who just happens to be undead falls in love with a young girl at first sight - I was skeptical. I assumed it would become a rehash of Twilight, and I just got over the nausea of seeing those posters cluttering all the billboards.
However, after trawling through the trailers and finding them appealing and funny, I decided that the movie was worth a shot. It advertises itself as a quirky, humorous take on zombies, throwing in a mix of teenage romance

From DeviantArt, Tumblr, WoW, TOR, all of it.
I don't like sharing aspects of my personal life anymore, but some things have happened and I need time alone. I apologize to anyone who's sent me a note in the past few weeks, whether on here or any of my other accounts; I won't be getting back to you. My Deviations are not deleted, merely hidden, but I have no intention of returning any time soon.
You've all been great.
Animation SituationI've been rushing at breakneck speeds to finish my animation in time for the official submission deadline tomorrow ... or, today, by now actually. However, there are still little fixes I want to make to Santiago's introduction scenes, as well as some revisions to the "finished" sequences with Louis and James, so I'm holding back on uploading the clips to Youtube.Animation Situation2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Until then, have some progress shots!
My ApologiesHello all,My Apologies2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Let me begin by first apologizing to those of you who have left me notes, comments, or questions over the past few weeks. I have been absent for DA for an extended period of time due to real life priorities, and the stress doesn't look as though it is about to relent. While I will try to get back on top of my deviations and replies here, it will be slow-going and I can't promise to be around regularly.
As well as rushing to meet deadlines for my animation, I have also been organizing and setting up the LASALLE Show with my classmates, and as class representative for 2D animation I have been required to make a daily appearance at my college. The LASALLE Show doubles as a showcase to display the best works amongst the different faculties of the college, as well as being a graduation show for those of us in the 3rd year, which I am. Honour Amongst Thieves has received a special display right at the entrance to the animation gallery, and I was occupied for the bett

Okay, no, on a more serious note: I've just had to re-draw the last two days' worth of frames and in-betweens for Louis because I realized I'd been drawing him "wrong".
Throughout Louis's character progress he's undergone several changes, most based on my own personal decisions, but many were also due to feedback from you guys here on DA, and I realise now that the "Louis is too skinny I don't like it" comments got to me more than they should have.
What these people don't realize is that Louis is ridiculously tall and skinny on purpose: he's a cartoon. He's not meant to be realistic, he's meant to be an exaggeration of the flamboyant gay stereotype, the skinny French stereotype, and his design reflects his wiles and cunning when it comes to out-witting his opponents. Out of al

It's sound-effect-less, music-less, and not cleaned up at all, but I will be uploading each scene as I complete them so that the voice actors can see how their work is coming together. Perhaps it's also interesting for people interested in some of the processes of animation, as well.
ADAM LAMBERT LIVE IN SINGAPOREI pride myself on being an "old soul" when it comes to music taste. As a kid I was raised on classical greats like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, and the list goes on by my dad. My mom weaned my sister and I on goldies like ABBA, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, and Boney M. I listen to copious amounts of 70s and 80s bands that make me look like a bit of a dweeb to my classmates, ranging anywhere from Alice Cooper, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Joan Jett through to Adam Ant and Dead or Alive. As a result, I'm heavily biased against what I call the "mainstream crap on MTV".ADAM LAMBERT LIVE IN SINGAPORE2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But just give me this one thing. Just this one.
Because I am a complete and total Glambert.
When I found out Adam Lambert was coming to Singapore March 8th I was both excited and conflicted, because I had already bought tickets to see Robert Plant (of Led Zeppelin) live on the 21st this month as well. But I'm glad I caved into my te

It was a great experience; I got the chance to work on multiple projects in the company, doing everything from technical drawings, character concepts, to storyboarding and illustrations. I was constantly challenged to produce faster and better work, including some digital and matte paintings, which I still struggle with immensely. By the end of the two months I was finally getting a handle on things, but alas, all good things must come to an end. I wish I could share some of my work with you, but I am sworn to confidentiality.
I made some good friends while I was there; the art director is a friend to the animation program leader at LASALLE, and he purposefully challenged me to start practicing digital painting. I was sat next to the senior storyboard and concept ar

No, I mean really, really cramped.

We also spent some time this evening listening to the voice auditions for Honour Amongst Thieves that I've received so far, and may I just say that a lot of the entries have been just SO amazing!! I'm seriously having a really hard time trying to choose between some of these voices, but I'm going to leave the auditions open until early January, so if we don't all die before the 22nd you've still got some time on your hands.

If you are considering going into the industry....If you are an artist or want to be one, especially if you want to get into the VFX industry, you should watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lcB9u-9mVE&feature=youtu.beIf you are considering going into the industry....10 months ago in Personal More Like This
It touches on a few things I feel are important to understand as an artist and even as consumers of art:
1.) Art is not an exact science. It can be difficult to put a price tag on it, let alone the often very complicated processes of making it.
2.) Computers are tools that facilitate our work but they DO NOT do the work for us.
3.) Don't get into this industry for the money. If you go into this line of work, you do it because you love it. If someone happens to get lucky or has a really great idea and he/she hits it big, GREAT! Good for him/her. But don't go in expecting that to happen to you. Chances are it won't. If you are lucky, you will find a nice middleclass job you can support yourself and your family on for a while...... until....
4.) Unfortunately, a lot of employers see artists as disposable. When

Now that my animation course has resumed I may as well update you all on the progress of my search for Voice Actors for the rolls of Louis, James, and Santiago for my upcoming film 'Honour Amongst Thieves':
Auditions are now closed, and three "finalists" have been selected as the voices for the characters. Congratulations to:
as Louis Despatis
as James Hunter
as Santiago de la Cruz
All three sent in terrific voice clips with very good quality, and I hadn't expected to find such suitable voices for all three characters, especially on such short notice for such a small production! Thank you all for spreading the word
