Stock and Resources UpdatesLETS TALK ABOUT STOCK "REQUESTS"
Every year we get excited, eager, passionate new stock providers entering our small but growing community, and every year these new stock models in particular get targeted by a small group of "requesters" Those of us who have been on the site for more than a few years recognise the types of "requests" I'm talking about and know to absolutely avoid them at all costs, but its something that I've seen more and more regularly over the last few months, and its definitely a concern.
There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create
Stock and Resources: Policy ClarificationThe Stock and Resources community is an integral part of deviantART, both for having an active community of its own as well as providing high quality stock to all deviants.Stock and Resources: Policy Clarification3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.
Stock and Resource submissions to deviantART:
What are Invalid Stock and Resources?
In short, invalid stock or resources are anything which you do not have full permission to upload. This incl
Why credit and notify?Hi all,Why credit and notify?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.
What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t
Some things we should talk aboutThis journal is here to highlight, debug and bust some myths for you all of stuff that goes on ALL the time, and is in part spurred by some recent events that leave me somewhat baffled and perplexed over some of the behavior we've been recently seeing across the DA communities, particularly Stock & Resources, and Photomanip since we work so closely together (and its apparently time I wrote a new wall of text to you all.)Some things we should talk about10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Every community has them. Those constant "issues" that make people angry and frustrated. Sometimes they can be easily solved with a little effort, and other times something just snaps and causes reactions that are far and away over the top. Here are some of our top faves.
Its time for everyone to take a nice soothing deep breath, its a long one!
There will be a test at the end.

However, please feel free to share this journal.
Recently, one of DA’s most active and respected stock users came under fire for using off site (meaning outside DA) stocks in her work. As a “stocker”, I was surprised to hear of this - It was my understanding that this was common practice for artists to do.
It prompted me to look into the matter and dust off the little bit of arts law I studied whilst doing my post grad in Arts Management. (And I will save you the definition of IP law and the fact that copyright stays in effect for about 150 years, give or take a few. If you want to read a bit more about the basics in easy to und

Our interviewees today are faestock, Tasastock, and SenshiStock.
1. Is an expensive camera necessary?
Tasastock says, "No, but they are damned fun to play with! You can get a decent camera for a decent price nowadays that will shoot good quality images in the right conditions. Obviously they're not good for low-light or anything capturing movement, but if you handle them right you can make do with an ordinary camera, I've known plenty of people to do so."
SenshiStock says, "I don't know much about cameras, but the best photographs you can take are always going to be the ones that

Mourning for Icarus by H.J. Draper 1898
The Theme- ART:
We want you to recreate the story of Icarus, be that modern, or ancient using stock and resources available on DeviantART.
The Theme - STOCK:
We want you to recreate the story of Icarus, in stock form! Is your Icarus male or female? Are your wings made from feathers and wax or something more magical?
The Story: Icarus
Son of Daedalus who dared to fly too near the sun on wings of feathers and wax. Daedalus had been imprisoned by King Minos of Crete within the walls of his own invention, the Labyrinth. But the great craftsman's genius would not suffer captivity. He made two pairs of wings by adhering feathers to a wooden frame with wax. Giving one pair to his son, he cautioned him that flying too near the sun would cause the wax to melt. But Icarus became ecstatic with the ability to fly and forgot hi

You may think that the creation and sharing of stock and resources is a no brainer. Clearly however its not, and there are a growing number of deviants who for some reason or another seem to not be able to grasp the basic principles.
As the last article we will be launching for Stock & Resources Project Educate week, we are going to attempt to lay it out for you in clear and easy to understand terms.

CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK*EDIT* Woohoo!! We have some entries!!CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Hello everyone!! It's been a while since I last held a stock challenge for stock artists but in the spirit of the new year here you go.
What if a mirror isn't all it seems. What if your reflection wants to keep you on your side? What if you are able to climb through a mirror but your reflection keeps standing in front of you, blocking your way? You try to touch the mirror without your reflection touching the same place. Maybe the cold surface isn't the mirror you're touching, but the cold flesh of your doppelganger, pushing back, keeping you on your side.
The theme is 'Through the Mirror'

deviantART has a large and devoted stock resource community and we really do appreciate their presence and their generosity with the community.
I do have something very important I'd like to mention for everyone who offers some sort of stock resource so hopefully those who read my journal will help to disseminate the information and spread it around to those who might not otherwise read it.
Officially deviantART maintains only one "automatic" restriction and that is "No Commercial Use" and that particular restriction can easily be overridden by the actual stock provider.
We only ask a few things from you in return.
Your terms or restrictions should b

I hope you have enjoyed your week! It's been kind-of quiet around here lately; have you all been at the beach?
Here is what I know is going on in our community.
Please welcome . . .
Every week we will try to feature a new member of our community. If you know of a new member (who has been here 6 months or less) and want to have a "welcome" feature for them, please note their name to ChisSweetArt.
This week, we are welcoming WriteGirl, Tanya, a writer-turned-manipulator! She has been in our community for about a month, and she has already contributed a great deal through her nicely-developing artistry and inspiring sense of creativity. Here are some of her lovely works for you to admire:
Why not drop by her gallery, leave a comment or two, and welcome her to our community? We've all been new at one point or another, and it's nice to make new friends.

Current dA submissions guidelines define "Fantasy Photomanipulation" as photomanipulation that focuses on a fantasy theme. We have therefore set out to speak with our fantasy constituency and gain a better understanding of how they see and define the complexities of fantasy photomanipulation.
We all know of dragons, wizards, sorcerers, witches, griffins, magic, fairies, fauns, and all other mystical and magical beings. We learned of them through stories, art, movies, and games. The fantasy genre has become increasingly popular because of movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and games like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "World of Warcraft," not to forget fantasy wr

Community Feature Project: If I Could DDHave you ever wished that you could pick a Daily Deviation Feature? I'm sure we've all seen an amazing piece of art or stock that we wished could have a bit more exposure. Well, this is your chance! This December we are encouraging you to feature your fellow deviants with a journal of images that you would feature as a Daily Deviation if you could. So let's embrace the Holiday Season and spread some good cheer by joining in and featuring our community!Community Feature Project: If I Could DD10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
The Game Plan
Create and publish a journal feature of images that you would choose for a Daily Deviation Feature from your preferred gallery.
(i.e. Stock providers would feature images from the Stock & Resources gallery. Photomanipulators would feature manips, etc.)
When your journal feature is live, link it back to your Community Volunteer's Community Feature Project Journal in the comments area.
(i.e. Stock providers will link to this journal. Photomanipulators will link to AbbeyMarie's jour
When you ask about book covers don'tI have a lot of inquires about using stock for book covers as well as other commercial works. Inquiries come from a number of different sources including: publishing companies, designers, and sometimes from the authors themselves. Here is some of the things I have noticed about a lot of these messages that are more damaging then helpful, and un professional. Please understand that this isn't about anyone in general nor do I feel anyone is being rude or disrespectful purposefully. I thought it would be helpful for the people inquiring and for other stock artists on DA.When you ask about book covers don't1 week ago in Personal More Like This
One of the biggest things I see is asking if the price listed is correct, and then giving a much lower number that you have paid for other stock.
-If I or any other stock provider has set a price it's because that is the price they feel comfortable offering. It's usually lower then they should offer, and telling them inadvertently it's too high is deva
Project Educate Stock and Resources DD CriteriaStock & Resources Daily Deviations. What We look for, and what you should look for as well!Project Educate Stock and Resources DD Criteria4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Its a regular question, and something that the other Community Volunteers get asked about as well. So during Project Educate Stock & Resources week I'm going to try and lay out some of the reasons behind our choices.
Stock & Resources Daily Deviations, and how they are judged by the Community.
Dan has already touched on this touchy subject in his "Potential" Article here - The Potential of Stock
There is something fundamentally different about stock & resources DD's compared to all the other DD's from all the other galleries.
Stock & Resources are NOT finished artworks to be viewed as an end product.
We can't stress this enough!!!
The Stock Artist/Provider/Creator has not submitted this work becasue they think its absolutely perfect and they want to show it off, they subm

We hope you all had an excellent beginning to the New Year! Please find below some very interesting contests, features and news.
Precut stock - all the problems :/
Precut stock is something that like Marmite, people either love, or hate. Either way it brings its own special issues to stock providers and photomanipulators alike, so I've highlighted some very important points you should take into consideration below.
Precut stock is in its very nature "EDITED" therefore its is no longer in its original photographic form and should therefore be posted to resources/clipart OR stock/premade backgrounds/.. NOT to the usual stock galleries which should be reserved for original photography that has only very minor post production edits such as exposure/brightness/contrast etc. alterations according to DA's gallery definitions.

We are still biting our fingernails and bouncing on the edge of our seats for the changes to be made to the stock and resources galleries. Don't worry! We've not forgotten them!
We have been making a concerted effort to track down and report celebrity images, and other non-legit resources and user accounts - though you probably wouldn't notice given how many there are.
Stock things you should know and be aware of
DON'T EVER EVER take a brush set from another website and upload it here under the pretence that its yours. We, and the artists who regularly use such brushes are not stupid. You and your accounts will be reported and will be removed. No matter how many times you ban evade.
CELEBRITY PHOTOS ARE NOT STOCK. Stop it.

REMINDER: Photomanip Tutorial Challenge!Welcome to our official tutorial challenge!REMINDER: Photomanip Tutorial Challenge!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Another tutorial challenge? YES! Keep reading!
Part of "illumination" is learning, expanding our horizons, and helping others learn as well. So, this time we are not going to USE tutorials. Rather, we are going to MAKE them.
What you have to do
Your job is as follows:
Take a critical look at your gallery. What are your strengths as an artist? What are you really good at doing? Are you known for your light and shadow? Color use? "Glow" effects? Do you do skin well? Can you paint really well? Are you a master of masks? What do people compliment you on?
Create a detailed tutorial, with examples, of how you achieve this effect or do this technique. It does not have to involve the creation of a new deviation. You can explain how you did this effect in an old deviation or just with stock without making it a full deviation.
