"Takashi we can't stay here." Saeko was doing a good job keeping the top of the stairs clear, but there were many of Them shambling and lurching towards them.
Takashi wanted to make sure the others managed to get over the cable blockade though. He had managed to get the shells for the shotgun before running to Saeko's "rescue". Rescue was not really the right word, because Takashi new that Saeko would have likely been able to battle her way out of the midst of the horde. Takashi thought it was more a question of would she have done it, he was worried about Saeko right now. The last thing Takashi was able to see before following Saeko was Wolf climbing on to the hood of the truck, and Saya getting on the roof.
Saeko did not give Takashi any more time to wonder what their friends were doing, "Takashi, move now!" There were m

The travel bus sat in the parking lot of a large grocery store. There were a handful of cars parked around the large lot, three empty shopping carts sat empty next to the bus's door. Many other carts, some still half loaded with groceries, were in the lot. The metal carts sat lonely and forgotten by whatever shoppers had fled Them days before. The bus had a small toilet in its very back, the outlet of which had been deliberately removed. There was a stench of human waste that lingered around the bus. The smell was especially strong near the rear where it dribbled from the outlet pipe and had smeared the rear fender. The front of the bus looked no better. The vehicle had been used to ram an uncountable number of walking corpses. The grill and fenders of the big vehicle were now darkly coated with bloody gore. A pile of trash
1 HOTD: Introductions Takashi kicked the motorcyclist backwards. The dead man stumbled and Rei hit him hard over the head with a piece of brick, doing little through the helmet. It, Takashi could not think of it as a him, lurched back towards Takashi paying Rei no attention at all. A single shot rang out and the side of the helmet exploded outward in fragments of bone and plastic. Rei ducked next to Takashi. Takashi looked around to see who had fired the shot.1 HOTD: Introductions4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Two men, one standing with a rifle, now pointed at the sky, the other sitting on the ground, were some distance up the street. The man lowered his rifle, and then shouldered it, reaching down he helped the other to his feet. The one with the rifle had a heavy leather duster on, and some kind of a mask that glinted back sunlight. The one who had been sitting had a tourniquet tied on his thigh, he was wearing a business suit, the pant leg had been torn off to expose a discolored bite wound at t

Takashi woke with a start. He was so sore, and he had not meant to actually sleep. Pulling his cellphone from his pocket he rubbed his eyes as he looked at the time. The clock on the phone read one twenty-eight in the morning.
"No way!" He shoved the phone in his pocket and jumped out of his recliner. Grabbing the pistol, he stuffed it in his waistband and then shook Shizuka awake.
"Mmmmm. Just a little longer, I won't be late, I'm sure." Shizuka pushed his hand away from her shoulder.
"Shizuka, wake up! We've been asleep for five hours!" Takashi pushed on her hard.
Shizuka sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes with her grubby hands, "Oh goodness, the others. They will be so worried

Wolf found Lady Yuriko on his way out of the manor. Asking about the arms the guards of the manor were carrying, Yuriko informed Wolf that there was a well stocked armory on the premises. Asking for permission to access the armory, Wolf promised to scavenge supplies in the following days to repay whatever his group took. Yuriko was agreeable to this, so long as an accounting of what was taken, and the goods brought in were brought to her.
Heading across the manor grounds to the garages Wolf met Matsudo, the manor's master mechanic.
"So, you are one of Saya-sama's companions are you?" The old mechanic asked as he wiped grease from his hands.
"Yep, that's me. Name is Wolf." Wolf put out his hand in greeting. "You've got a fine shop here. I've got some i

The companions all slept through the morning their second day in the duplex. Clouds had blown in, and it was raining steadily outside. It seemed Mother Nature was acknowledging, with sadness, the changes that had taken place in the world recently. Heavy, gray clouds hung low over the city making the streets slick enough to cause Them to slide, and slip in their slow plodding, meanderings. It would have almost been comical except for the horribleness of it all. The wrong colored skin, dead grey, missing limbs, white bones showing in places, the walking corpses were anything but comical in any way. Streets just days ago that had been full of the living, going about their daily business, were now unsafe, horror ridden, mazes of death.
Inside the dwelling, the patter of rain filled the silence created by lack of television,

It was almost midnight when they finally found a building with an exterior fire escape. An eight story apartment building, or retirement home maybe. Lots of windows showed signs that THEM haveing been in the rooms. Broken windows, curtains and blinds pulled askew, or hanging through the windows, and the dark stains the three had seen too often everywhere. Rei pointed a shaking, pale finger towards one of the upper floors, her eyes were wide, and Wolf could see the dark circles under them. Takashi looked up where Rei was pointing, a body hung from a window, slumped on the sill at the waist. A long trail of gore ran from the body, down two floors, a dark stain on the buildings light outer paint. It glistened wetly in the ambient glow of the street lights. There were some of THEM standing around in small groups on the street and sidewalk and they jumped to life at the sound of the motorcycle e

The three riders saw that there were lots of small fires burning in the district ahead. Many of Them were in the streets, and shop fronts. This was mainly a business district, lots of small shops with living spaces over them on the second and even some third floors. Living people were still around, they had seen a few on a balcony. Rei tried waving, but the people had just watched the two motorcycles weave through the cars and debris cluttering the street. Takashi slowed, and then stopped in the middle of an unusually clear intersection. He looked left and right, there were cars, and Them in both directions. Wolf pulled alongside their bike and then there was a loud shot, then two more. All three riders looked in every direction. Wolf pointed in the direction they had been traveling.
"That way I think it was."

"You should probably get back to Takashi, or Nurse Shizuka don't ya think?" Wolf spoke the words, but he was happy for the company. This young woman, she was becoming a new hope for him, her and her friends. Wolf thought for sure he was going to just wander, killing Them until his rage was all used up, but that thought had changed quickly when he met Takashi and Rei, still alive, still fighting so hard to keep living. So, he kept his hand on Rei's, which was tucked under his elbow. Rei considered going back, having things she wanted to share with the others. She wanted badly to know what made them leave the bus. Looking back, it was slow going for everyone. At times the serpentine line of companions had to climb over vehicles, that were parked so tightly on the bridge, there was often little other way of continuing. Everyone seemed to be following at

2 HOTD: The Gas Station Pulling up to opposite sides of the same pump, everyone got off the bikes. The streets were dark, and too quiet. There had been some of Them, here and there, as the three got deeper into the city. THEY had been standing, motionless, until the sounds of the motorcycles engines gave them something to shuffle and lurch towards. Their slow movements made it easy to pass the small groups, but the three companions knew it would get more difficult to maneuver as they started to find larger crowds in the streets. It was a concern none spoke.2 HOTD: The Gas Station4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Takashi was looking at the pump, "Damn it!"
"What's the matter?" Rei asked as she was trying to untangle her long hair. It was a mess after being wind-blown on the back of the bike for so long.
"This is a self serve station. You need cash to feed into the pump for it to work." Takashi kicked the pump in disgust, and ran his fin

The next day found the companions crossing the river in the HUMMER. Driving for several hours was necessary to find a shallow enough place to drive across. Kohta was sitting on the roof with Alice singing "Row Row Row Your Boat" while Saya used the binoculars to scan the far side of the river they were heading towards. Shizuka had been nervous about driving the big military truck actually IN the river, but Kohta and Wolf had assured her it was something she could do. Wolf had insisted on strapping their gear to the roof if people were going to be sitting up there. Having their stuff strapped to the roof would give some support when they were on the roads for anyone riding up there. Everyone had thought he was "mothering" them, but he had been adamant and had won in the end. Takashi was asleep in the back seat, Rei was leaning against his shoulder and Saeko w

(A Response to "Goodbye" by sorryigotbored)
I'm sorry that you cry
You tell me it's time to say "Goodbye"
I move to wipe the tears that trail down your cheeks
I know it's hard to face the day
After another sleepless night spent staring at the clock
You don't want me to say the words
To try and change your mind
But something in me screams
And if I don't, I've known regret
That bitter taste, it seems to last forever
So now I say it, "Please won't you try and stay"
You shake your head,
You say you thought there was no plan
That you had no purpose here
But then I know you heard me say "I care"
Then you smiled a fleeting one, but I saw it for a moment
Really, please, this life is something I find hard to take
I need a to walk away awhile, I need to take a break
I hold you close, our eyes both sting, our hearts they ache
The lies you've heard, I've heard them too
Don't let them poison your heart
Like the ones of those who spoke them
A moment more I hold you close

When all is said and done.
Are you finally satisfied?
Do you think you've won?
But don't you see the damage?
Just look at all the pain you've brought.
You know, you've just lost more than you've got.
Don't you know it's useless?
Your effort's just in vain.
I can clearly see the lies you've placed,
In your little game.
And I just can't believe that I've fallen
For someone as pathetic as you.
Because even for one second,
You couldn't be true.
I really hate your smile today,
It's really annoying me.
Now that I look at it,
You have crooked teeth.
Your smile that was so radiant
Is now just such a different thing.
Why don't I ever notice the cloud that it brings?
You are such a liar.
I'll never believe you again.
But I know that I'll be better than you
I'll do everything I can.
I'll make you regret your lying
And find someone who's better than you.
Oh yes, and Vincent?
We are so through.

It's self destruction.
It's a game.
Some of us play harder than others.
Why do we play? To win or to lose or to forget.
We push the envelope.
Some of us play to the end of the line.
The end game. The final game.
The last seconds on the clock tick down, but we don't hear the buzzer.
The game is over.
Some of us cut, or eat, or exercise.
Some take pills, or drink, or drugs. The obvious things.
Our loved ones.
Our homes, our bodies, our jobs.
The dishes, the laundry, the children.
THE CHORES, THE EXPECTATIONS, THE PAIN, THE VOICES!
I think I'll have a smoke.
