My favorite ART suppliesI get asked a lot what pens and pencils I use. So I thought I'd post an updated list of my favorites. I'm a big fan of trying new things, I'm always buying lots of different pens to try out and in my search for the best tools to use for creating comics Ive found these to work the best for my needs. My favorite ART supplies3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My number one question that others ask me is "What do you ink with?"
I use Kuretake brush pens. Here's a link to a sable hair brush pen that I love, it's the closest thing to a real brush I've used. It is pricey though. http://www.jetpens.com/Kuretake-No.-40-Fountain-Hair-Brush-Pen-Sable-Hair-Refill/pd/3958
The less expensive version is the synthetic hair, http://www.jetpens.com/Kuretake-No.-13-Fountain-Hair-Brush-Pen-Red-Body/pd/2661 this brush pen is similar to a Pentel brush pen. http://www.jetpens.com/Pentel-Pocket-Brush-Pen-for-Calligraphy/pd/1793
The cool thing about these Kuretake brush pens is the refill cartridges have nice ink in them that I use, but if you find you don't like the

I don't even have that for wasps, and they're real bastards.
I think it's because spiders actively try to invade your personal space.
At least, that's what I always assumed they were doing.
After seeing this, it's hard for me to maintain my view that they're 8-legged masterminds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLw-9dpHtcU
Art Process / Tutorial Videos available now!Alright guys, I have something new for you which you have been asking for years.Art Process / Tutorial Videos available now!5 months ago in Personal More Like This
The amount of time it takes to do a tutorial, the bandwidth it takes to upload it (some files well over 550MB), the sapce to host some of the files, and many other considerations usually hindered me from making them.
I have changed my Patreon over to a tutorial / process video site!
Now for a pledge of only 1USD per post, you will get not a youtube link, but an actual downloadable video for you to keep along with the full size PSD file with layers! The videos will range between 30 - 90 minutes and are 720pi. The PSD file is well over 2500pi tall/wide.
There is a video I have just posted right now! When you guys become patrons, you can suggest things you want to see and I will try to make as many videos as I can, but I need your support otherwise I will stop since I have to work.
I wasn considering making assignments, doing marker stuff, backgrounds, and just whatever

Getting into comics is something a lot of people want to know how to do, but there's a lot of questions you want to ask yourself first. There is such a vast array of genre and sub-genre, technique, approach, and so on, that it's important to be clear where you want to go with your work at the outset – and you have to be REALLY honest and tough on yourself.
Do you want to draw:
If you're into the capes and tights and you want to go mainstream you're going to have to want it incredibly badly, as the competition is the most extreme I've ever known it right now. There seems to be more titles than ever - and with the digital revolution more people are capable of producing sleek, mainstream quality art - but right across the

I was going to write about my major writer's block (which is a shame because I was going to do a writing blitz and it fizzled!), or perhaps how modern American Conservatism and Superheros do not mix...but this pisses me off.
How sexist is that bullshit! It's slamming doors in the faces of women. Women who are already treated like shit way too much by the comics subculture. Not to mention these guys are making light of RAPE. That pisses me off as well; as high profile rape cases here in the States had the communities trying to heap the blame on the VICTIM.
These guys callously use rape and disregard the ramifications. Not to mention they just "mansplained" comics to women. As a man, and as a guy who wants to work in comics, these "Legends" disgust me! We got many more women writers coming in after women like Gail Simone broke down the barriers, and these "Our Gang"-esque aholes
Tracing gets you nowhere.I remember when I was a kid, I'd record Saturday morning cartoons, play them back, pause the image, put a piece of paper over the screen and trace my favourite characters.Tracing gets you nowhere.7 months ago in Personal More Like This
Now this was really hard in the VHS era, because a paused image on a VHS is usually either broken up or shakes so much that you’ll have some kind of fit if you look at it too long, it depended on how cheap and sh*tty your machine was.
But I worked really hard at it, man. I spent ages getting the linework just right, I was so careful, and when I peeled the page from the static cling of the bulbous, cathode ray tube screen, the character looked exactly right on the page. And you wanna know what I took away from that endeavour? What all that effort taught me?
Jack f**king sh*t.
You don’t pick up or develop any skills by tracing. You don’t devise and perfect your own methods by tracing. You do not progress as an artist by tracing. All you get is a loss of credibility, especially in this day and age, bec

Alternate RealityHello Fellow Deviants!Alternate Reality3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Every couple of years I manage to crawl out of my dungeon and rejoin the public world for a few hours. This time around the outing was very special as I visited one of my favorite local Las Vegas comic shops. Alternate Reality Comics hosted a lovely reception for me as the feature artist of their October 2012 Artist Spotlight.

If Comic Oasis is my home away from home, then Alternate Reality is my home away from my home away from home.
Neither of which I visit often enough.

YOUNG JUSTICE: CANCELLATIONWith this online art community, we have a unique opportunity to connect with our kindred. We must avail ourselves of this experience, for it may never come again.YOUNG JUSTICE: CANCELLATION2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Yes, YOUNG JUSTICE fans, the sad news is now official. This very popular show will -- Reach-- its abrupt and premature end with the conclusion of Season Two. It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the reports. Of course, none of us was able to say anything about it since last year. It was a very fun ride. As for the reasons behind the cancellation, I can only say that it was beyond the control of WB Animation, and that the decision was made by the powers at Cartoon Network (bless 'em). On behalf of the producers, and the rest of our dedicated crew at YOUNG JUSTICE, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the loyal fans who supported us, who shared the dream with us, and who will continue to love the YOUNG JUSTICE universe

No lie--I really do. Other pros who have sat next to me while I'm signing have, on more than one occasion, told me that they'd gladly trade readers with me. Most everyone who comes up to me feels like someone I would hang out with. Lots of artists, writers, students, and other kind people from all walks of life who make it all worth while.
After shows, I'll usually end up drinking at some event. And while everyone is usually cool, once in a while I'll overhear a pro talking about the weirdos in their line, or about how an over zealous fan was rude to him/her about how Batman's utility belt wasn't drawn properly. I've NEVER had that in my line. I drew an absurd "Dark Knight stick" on my Batman statue, and I've NEVER heard any crazed Batman fan get worked up about it! Adding things to Batman without permission will usually cause trouble on some forum SOMEWHERE, but I've never gotten that.
Not sure what I've done to deser
ARTGERMINATION - My Digital Art ChatroomARTGERMINATION - My Digital Art Chatroom3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Many people has asked me about the rationale behind my nickname - Artgerm in many occasions. To me it is more than just a nick, it is actually my mission statement in my art journey, which I would like to see people get "infected" by my works and inspire them to create art. I've been drawing for the past 20 years, in which 16 years in digital medium. Art has already been part of my life long time ago - it is my passion, my profession and my life. Although majority of my time has been devoted to the commercial projects and my family and leave me very little time to impart my art knowledge to others outside of my studio, my mission statement has never and will never change.
As a result, I've decided to setup a deviantArt chatroom recently called Artgermination for all digital art discussions, which I put in a good amount of my time daily to interact with other dA members, sharing with them my journey in art and con

At least 12 people were murdered, and many more were wounded; some of them are in critical condition.
If you are a spiritual person, please say a prayer for the dead, the dying, and those living touched by this tragedy.
If you are not a spiritual person, any happy thoughts or kind gestures would surely be appreciated.
Please refrain from any speculation, politicization, rumor-mongering, conclusion-jumping, finger-pointing, and other similarly inappropriate behavior for just a little while, if possible. It hasn't even been 12 hours since the tragedy took place, and that sort of unproductive demagoguery is already being handled nicely by the 24-hour news venues.
Real tragedies like this happen, all over the world, and our responsibility to our fellow man is to render aid & support, be it large or small, in times of crisis.

BrazilLast week I was trying to get a visa for a trip to FIQ--the largest comic art festival in the southern hemisphere. The process was frustrating, so I posted a Tweet. It was soon picked up by a Brazilian newspaper, and that's when the drama started.Brazil2 years ago in Personal More Like This
"The Brazilian visa process is ridiculous. One more snag and I'm canceling the convention at FIQ." was my Tweet.
A few hours later, the "story" was picked up by a large Brazilian newspaper, seen here: http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/ilustrada/2013/09/1340399-autor-de-hq-punk-rock-jesus-diz-que-visto-para-brasil-e-ridiculo-e-poe-visita-em-duvida.shtml
Which started a 48 hour session of my Brazilian readers fighting off the hundreds of offended Brazilians (most of whom have no idea who I am) attacking my Tweet. After retweeting the more ridiculous tweets, I finally signed off of Twitter for a few days. I also asked my Twitter followers to halt the conversation because it was just getting worse. Even this morning, I deleted a few threats in my emai
