Make it Glow: A Photoshop TutorialThis is also a rebloggable Tumblr Post!Make it Glow: A Photoshop Tutorial3 years ago in Personal More Like This
A lot of people were asking me how I did the glowing/neon light effects on my last drawing. It's actually extremely easy, and it looks great with shapes or text.
The key to this effect is contrast. Your background and overall image must be pretty dark for it to be effective. You know how you can't see a flashlight in broad daylight? The same applies here.
Step one, make a new document, and invert the default black background (command + i) or manually fill it with black. Then make A NEW LAYER. This is the layer containing the colors you want to glow.
Now duplicate the layer you just made with the colors. Set the layer style to "screen." Screen applies the layer to make everything below it lighter. (It's the opposite of the "Multiply" setting.)
Now apply a "Gaussian Blur" fi

Creator Owned Day is 1st March 2012.The challenge:Creator Owned Day is 1st March 2012.4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Create a sketch of an original character or concept and and post it on your blog Thurday 1st March. It should be a concept completely owned by the artist (or co-owned with the writer/collaborators permission to post).
Why? A number of reasons:
1. A lot of reader and creator focus is on characters owned by larger corporations. Let's bring a little spotlight on creating brand new, creator owned concepts.
2. Bringing a little awareness to the business side of co-creating original content. Take a look at Jeff Parker's article and follow up comments on the subject. Co-creators can take this opportunity as a little trial run, just make sure to have a mutual agreement in advance.
3. Fun! A few creators discussed the idea on Twitter and thought it was a great opportunity to create something entirely new, while bringing attention to these sketches.
1. Create an sketch of a new character/character you own. We're doing this primarily to get our imaginations running, so

We will be announcing the winners tomorrow, Nov 11 2012, so make sure to check for a journal update!! Nervous much?
Dear Raiders, we’re thrilled to announce that after long weeks of preparations we are finally ready to launch
our first grand art contest!
You do know all these gorgeous promotional artworks, don’t you?
And do you know how those were created? All these masterpieces used to be very rough sketches once, like this:
Many of you definitely know how fascinating the process of an artwork’s creation is - how the idea turns into a sketch, how the sketch turns into a breathtaking artwork. Tomb Raider Empire offers you a chance to walk in the shoes of creative directors yourselves and invites to join the contest

Let's ruin it.
Despite being a story of people who usually make it, The Walking Dead comics aren't that positively oriented. What's positive about a world full of mindless brain-eating zombies with very few living healthy humans left? (Don't answer, I know that for some of you it's a paradise). Come and take a closer look at these comics from a diffrent way than usual.
The basics. The Walking Dead is a black and white monthly comic book series, written by Robert Kirkman and brought to its visual life by Tony Moore. These two guys are the creators of the serie, however, Tony Moore was replaced from issue #7 by Charlie Adlard (which didn't stop him from making the covers through issue #24). And, of course, there's also Cliff Rathburn, who's

Welcome to a fortnightly activity in which you basically tell me what to draw. The focus being: crossovers between any two franchises.
I will have 2 polls running, each with 10 different franchises – one determines the subject and the other determines the theme. Every second week, I’ll take the highest voted franchises from each list and combine them with an illustration into a Frankenstein’s monster of franchises – the “Franchistein”, if you will.
Additionally, there will be 2 similar polls formed with any and all suggestions you make. These determine which franchises will appear in the top 10 lists.
I created a few examples, to give you an idea of the remixes:

Starting a Webcomic - Four Words You Need to Know"Just fucking do it"Starting a Webcomic - Four Words You Need to Know3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I wanna preface this by saying that this is all opinion and observation, formed from my own experiences and perspective. In fact, I think it needs to be said that I create webcomics in a bit of a vacuum...
The other day I was talking with a graphic designer friend, and he mentioned how now and then he'd get together with other graphic designers just to hang out and share stories. He also mentioned that I don't have that with fellow web-comic artists or with other freelance illustrators. At the time he said this I sort of shrugged it off, but it's true and it's a bigger deal than I first thought. Sure, I have plenty of friends that have entered comic tournaments, or with aspirations of being webcomic creators, but few to none that really produce them. At the least, none I feel I can hang out with, online or off, and go "haha yeah fans amirite?" or "oh shit _____ linked to you?! sweet!". Most importantly, webcomics can be a work-intensive unrewarding hobby at times.
PE: Literature Critique TipsAs part of Project Educate Critique week, the Community Volunteers would like to share more art specific elements to consider whilst giving good critique.PE: Literature Critique Tips4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Today we are looking at the Literature gallery, with our Top Tips.
Before you start
READ the piece all the way through.
Read it again, making notes of what you would like to point out in your critique.
Stay Objective- you are critiquing the piece not the person.
These tips are areas which aren't just necessary in critiquing others' work, but also when self-critiquing your own writing. This is one person's suggestions and I welcome any further tips in addition.
A good opening. The opening to any form of writing doesn't necessarily need to involve a physical explosion, but it needs to have an initial hook; something to entice the reader in. It needs to be clear, something that

TEEN TITANS IS BACK! BUT... It is not season 6.
There are good news and bad news (it depends on how you view it)
-THE RUMOR ABOUT TESTING TT SHORTS ON BRINGING BACK THE ACTUAL SHOW WAS TRUE.
-ALL VOICE ACTORS WILL BE TOGETHER
-Still has that kid-ish appropriate.
-Full half-hour shows!
Bad News( Changes. it depends if its good or bad in your view):
-The title will be: Teen Titans Go!
-Different drawing styles
-More focused on humor
-It's more of a filler episode as being teenagers during their free time
-Premieres in 2013.
Found out where?:http://my.deviantart.com/messages/#/d52ux02
I'm glad they're back but I'm sorta scared on how it'll turn out. Hopefully it's still interesting, yes?

anyhoo issue 1 will be reprinted too and available.
about the books themselves. each issue is a 160 page graphic novel. of that book 1 is 120 pages of comic, and 40 pages of bonus world material. sort of an encyclopaedic, not necessary, but tasty fluff,
book 2 is 135 pages of comic and 25 pages of fluffy side stuff
series itself will consist of 12 books. so by is end it will be about 1500 pages of one single fantasy tale
early previews for boo 2 are here, and soon the ones with final text and lettering will be shown, online so i will link those when they are up
books are available for preorder through amazon , and pretty much any comic book store or top cow.

I'm going to provide all these Answer and more here, so listen up.
1.The most commonly asked question is "How did you learn how to draw"
I get asked this question a ton and my answer is pretty much the same every time. "PRACTICE!!!" I cannot stress this enough, but you have to practice. You will only get out of it what you put into it. How good do You want to be?
Truthfully thats up to you.
I've put in a good 15 years of drawing almost everyday. I've wanted to be a comic artist more than anything. I WANTED IT! And now I'm doing it. But I had to work at it. I didn't just wake up one day an

It's quite a LOT of books. But consider that I've collected them over the course of the past 10 years. I still re-read them whenever I find time, and learn new things from them.
More than half of my books are in English, because that's where the good stuff is at.
Titles in other languages than English are written in cursive.

The Expert and The ExplorerThere is this strange phenomenon Im seeing as I slog around in the mud learning photography. The Expert and The Explorer3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Two distinct mindsets that you can make out pretty quick when talking to someone about the subject.
Ive made up names for them, because I do weird things like that in my spare time.
I call them The Expert, and the Explorer.
They are both very knowledgeable about whatever craft they have chosen.
They both have experience.
They may even look the same at first....
but they are polar opposites once you get to know them.
When you are trying to learn something new, and put any kind of creativity out into the world, you will run into both of them.
The one sure way you can tell if you are talking to an expert or an explorer is how they make you feel about what you are doing. They can both tell you the exact same thing, but the Expert will leave you feeling inadequate, and the Explorer will leave you feeling empowered.
+The Expert will tell you what you should do, the Explorer will tell you what
Wizarding World of Harry Potter Rumored Expansionquick little news tidbit i thought you would all enjoy before the next update about the newest feature and the next holiday promptWizarding World of Harry Potter Rumored Expansion4 years ago in Personal More Like This
“The rumored plan would be an expansion of the Wizarding World from Islands of Adventure into Universal Studios Orlando. This isn’t going to be a duplication of what we’ve already seen at all, and it really isn’t even going to be the Wizarding World either. Rather, “the new land to be build in Universal Studios Florida will actually represent the “London” side of the PotterVerse… including an entrance to the infamous Diagon Alley… Diagon Alley, as seen in the movies, is home to infamous locations such as The Leaky Cauldron, Gringott’s Wizarding Bank and the true Ollivanders wand shop location, as seen in the films. The London location is also said to be home to King’s Cross station, where students would board the Hogwarts Express train from Platform 9 ¾.”

Reading is the opposite of dyingI've recently started reading The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. I rarely read new releases, mostly because I'm cheap, but also because I have a book list that goes on into eternity. The only queue hopping that happens are new books by my favorite authors, which Schwalbe is not. Well, at least not yet.Reading is the opposite of dying3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The book is a memoir framed by the books Schwalbe and his mother read during the last years (maybe months, I'm not sure, I'm only a chapter in) of her life. It is a rather brilliant way to tell a story, which is what initially drew me in to the book (plus a handful of really glowing reviews). And I'm glad I pushed aside my normal list if only for this paragraph that appears in the very first chapter:
"We all have a lot more to read than we can read and a lot more to do than we can do. Still, one of the things I learned from Mom is this: Reading isn't the opposite of doing; it's the opposite of dying. I will never be able to read my mother's favorite books without thi
