People + Portraits Photography Talent SpotlightKendra-Paige has been on deviantART for over eight years now and has made a strong mark on the people and portraits gallery especially with her fashion work. Her kit consists of a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon EF 85mm 1.2L II lens using various other lenses and focal lengths but repeatedly gravitating towards the 85mm. She uses a combination of lightroom and photoshop to post-process her work although she keeps her editing as minimal as possible as she doesn't enjoy the post-processing bit of photography!
Why did you choose people as a photographical interest?
I have always found people to be fascinating, and I have a particular interest in expressions and eyes. The eyes tend to be the focal point in a lot of my work, and typically dictate the image. Aside from this, it’s the collaborative effort that I enjoy in portraiture. When you take images of animals and nature, there is only so much control you have with the subject - a lot of it is luck

It's a tough topic and one that most of us like to shy away from rather than embrace, but the honest truth is that the shots of people that you get - the best kind - are the ones that are candid, journalistic or spontaneous. That usually means asking permission afterwards, or not asking permission at all - which can appear quite odd, to some. One of my biggest concerns and anxieties is having my camera out in public. I recently went to a beach, of all places, and was shooting the coastline when a horrible feeling crept over me and I realised that there were lots of people around and that I was invading, a little bit, on their privacy. These guidelines are useful for shooting on the street, at public gatherings and events and at more formal occasions such as weddings.
If the person is going to be the main subject of your photo - then it's kind to ask permission, get perm
DeviantART'S 12th Birthday Gameshow: Starting soonDeviantART Birthday Gameshow is starting in just FIFTEEN MINUTES!DeviantART'S 12th Birthday Gameshow: Starting soon3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
We're looking for game players to come and join in our deviantART Birthday Event! In just a short while 3wyl and myself are hosting an interpretation of a British game show called Pointless. The idea of the game is that you have to guess the least popular answer to a multiple answers question. You will be awarded points accordingly, those with the most points will win - but you will have used pointless answers to get there!
We'll have pre-judged the least popular and most popular answers by asking a panel of CVs beforehand for their responses. Want an example?
Name a Film Starring Tom Cruise
Okay so Mission Impossible is a really high answer and if you said that one, you'd get lots of points. Which isn't good! If you said Rain Man - you'd possibly be getting less points. But if you said something like Endless Love or Taps, then you'd be hitting on an answer tha
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.

"One Signature is worth a thousand implied tones..."

In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. This is also being debated with regards to post-production and if you get somebody else to edit your work. What are your thoughts on this? And when attributing this to the deviantART community, what
PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

Interviews with photographers breaking into the industry as well as those who are more established.
Interviews with creatives and professionals photographers can expect to work with.
PE - Furcadia Ports and Stamps: CategorizationSometimes the category system here on dA can get a little confusing. For example; you created a piece using pixeling techniques but you intend to use it as an icon. Where do you categorize it? A lot of people just are not sure. So this article should help to clear it up.PE - Furcadia Ports and Stamps: Categorization3 years ago in Personal More Like This
When it comes to categorization, intended use can be a huge factor. In this case, Furcadia portraits would belong in the Icons and Handhelds gallery instead of Pixel Art or Anthro, because while it may have been created pixel by pixel and the subject is anthro, it was created for use as a portrait (often shortened to port), with specific size parameters and place of display kept in mind. By putting them in Icons, ports are easy to find and media doesn't separate them; some ports are not done in a pixel by pixel manner but as they are similar in theme and intended use, they should be seen in the same area. As this is not the first time this has been discussed, I feel the need to
PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b

Hi there and welcome to the Project Educate week for Architecture and Urban & Rural Photography! Before the week can really start off, we need to find out what Architecture and Urban & Rural Photography are really about. In later articles, we will also go in depth on the subcategories of both galleries. On DeviantART there are many sub-categories within the People & Portraits Gallery and some of those are self explanatory whilst others take a little bit more planning and thinking about to achieve. Throughout this week, we'll be working to hopefully clean up misconceptions and straighten out parts of the People & Portrait Galleries. PE Interview with DD Suggester Minato-KushinaAs part of Daily Deviations PE week we have interviewed the lovely Minato-Kushina who has been suggesting DDs since November 2010. She has since then had over 500 suggestions accepted and as a result of her regular suggestions, made her name known on the DD page.PE Interview with DD Suggester Minato-Kushina3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
What first got you interested in wanting to suggest DDs?
I don't really remember the exact point when I started paying attention to DDs. I guess, I saw these beautiful pictures at the bottom of my page. Gradually, I understood that they were a kind of "award" for outstanding pieces. I was also wondering how some people could suggest DDs! By searching here and there, I found the way.
I eventually decided to send my first suggestion to rydi1689, the then Fan Art Gallery Moderator. She is so kind, she accepted it immediately! This encouraged me to suggest more and eventually to love this task. I am generally shy with others. So this gesture, although it may seemed normal to her, it was

"The use of filters, how to pick them and examples of situations where they would be helpful...."
Hi moria330, filters are a good way of diversifying your photographic opportunities without spending a great deal of money (though, granted, many of the better quality filters can get to be relatively expensive).
In film photography, filters were used a lot more extensively then they are today thanks to the nature of the medium.
For example colour filters were used for white balance purposes on colour films that were balanced for different light types, so, you could shoot artificial light balanced film under daylight if you had a filter that corrected for it.
Project Educate: Being a People PersonSo you've got the equipment, you've got the top notch camera, the lighting, the studio, the backdrop and even the perfect weather - everything you need for a portrait photography shoot right? Wrong. The key behind all photographs that contain a living and breathing subject is to have the natural look. Just like the key to a conceptual shot is having the idea, the key to portraiture photography is having the eye. I have especially found in the past, that people develop a pained and strained look on their face when the camera is pointed in their direction. Interestingly enough, it happens more often at Weddings. The bride and groom quite often develop the look that they might have when they've just finished writing out the cheque for me to photograph their big day...
Then, quite suddenly one day, I got it. It was when a stunning bridesmaid at a wedding lifted her hands in front of her face and squealed when I clicked the camera in her

Daily deviations tend to be a controversial topic within the community and whether or not a DD is worthy of the feature is, as such, often discussed.
As a CV for Icons & Handhelds I often find it interesting to read these discussions, since that way I can see what the community expects of the features, but the recent negativity on the Icons & Handhelds DDs is something I would like to address, which is why I'm thankful I'm given this opportunity during the Daily Deviation PE-week. I will try to explain why I think icons and handhelds are worthy of the feature and why they may be dismissed just a bit too quickly.
Let's begin at the beginning.
When deviantART first started, it was a site that mainly geared towards customization. Be it wallpapers or icons, if you take a look at some of the first DDs. So how come there'
Photography Troubleshooting: The Watermark FAQ"How do I protect my photography and art in general?"Photography Troubleshooting: The Watermark FAQ3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
"As Eitvys200 pointed out, at least 1 journal per month makes it to the top of the list and is about stealing art. Sometimes this is something small such as posting a piece to facebook, other times you see hoards of pieces on a website selling wallpapers or something similar. Regardless of how it happens, or where, it can hurt just as much to see your hard work disregarded and especially someone else profiting or taking credit.
Protecting work is a huge deal for some people, and not for others. It depends entirely on your outlook - how you view your work and indeed whether or not there needs to be some constrictions on it due to the content being a child, or family member. But how do we protect our work properly from art theft and wrongful use? The simple answer is you can't provide for every eventuality. Even if you upload your work to a website where right click -> copy is disabled,

Let's take a quick look at what a Daily Deviation is first. You might remember this article from our last PE week A Daily Deviation is NOT an award, but a feature. If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at it! It's a great read and you can get a good foundation as to what a Daily Deviation stands for.
So, I'll be touching on the subject of "Complaints about quality declines in Daily Deviations". Why is this so important to touch on? That's a great question and I will be more than happy to answer it below as I describe some key factors that are often overlooked in the way of art vs quality.
Addressing Quality of Deviations

There is a lot of this going around "Daily Deviations are losing quality. They're not as beautimous as they used to be.". How about we step out of the shoes of "what is and isn't art" for just a s

Hi there and welcome to another Project Educate article! Today we will focus on Architecture Photography. By using examples of great architecture photography, I hope to clarify what the function of each subcategory is.
Architecture photography, found as photography subcategory Photography > Architecture, is photography focusing on buildings and structures. Both interior and exterior photographs of buildings and structures can be classified as Architecture photography. It is described by deviantART as; "Interior and exterior photographs of buildings and other architectural structures."
It's divided into four categories; Bridges & Suspended Structures, Exterior, Interior, and Statues & Monuments.
