FAQWhat pencils and supplies do you most often use? (Including coloured pencils )FAQ3 years ago in Personal More Like This
For graphite drawings I use a fairly basic set of tools and I do have preferred brands. I mainly use Tombow Mono 100 pencils, Tombow Mono Zero Erasers, Blu-Tack (instead of a kneaded eraser), Tortillions, colour shaper and Tissue if I'm blending. I mainly use a smooth plate finish paper for graphite drawings, my preferred brand is Mellotex, but I also use Winsor and Newton Extra Smooth Bristol board. My essential kit is here http://pbird12.deviantart.com/gallery/30897635#/d5euwgp it's not exhaustive, but it's what I use most of all.
For coloured pencil drawings I use Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and Blu-Tack and occasionally a touch of white acrylic for highlights if I've lost them in the colouring process. I like a Hot Pressed Watercolour paper for colour pencil drawings. It's smooth enough to keep everything looking ni

This is a journal I've been meaning to write for a while but I don't know where to begin.
I'm going to list some scenarios that have bothered me and afterwards give a short comment.
Just to be clear:
- This concerns traditional art only.
- I don't disapprove or dislike all of these examples but I want all media and alterations be listed in the artist's notes.
- This is just my pet peeves.
- there are many deviants that I like that use effects.
- I'm not an art-nazi, this is for those who pretend to be something they're not.
ONE LAST UPDATE:
- This does not include correcting scanning and photography quality loss - I have no problem with that.
1. Sepia color overlay.
There are many deviants that change the color of their graphite drawings from black & white to a faded brown in Photoshop. Fundamentally I don't have a problem with that but it should be listed in the media since
Fake art - why care and what to look forI posted this last week for anyone looking for help to spot fake art. This is not law, if you don't care, feel free to move on. But if you do care that there are fakers out there, then maybe this could be of some use to you too. We have a serial faker on the loose on dA today so it sparked this little lot once more.Fake art - why care and what to look for3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, the questions/scenarios asked are always the same and the responses/justifications are always the same, but give them a minute to sink in before replying and insulting.
(Q1) Why do you care if someone is cheating what does it have to do with you?
(A1) Well, this is a public ART site and if people are submitting art that is not actually what they claim it to be, then they are dishonest. This will annoy some people and not others. If your passionate about your work then the chances are you'll find it insulting to the artistic community as a whole. Additionally, a lot of admins of groups HAVE to deal with fakes as a daily occure

which states clear cut facts so as to why the whole issue about someone faking their art creates rage waves through the art community!
The last week has been a riot which ended up in me getting blocked by two deviants here who clearly have something to hide!
I obviously care much less about the fact that there are many artists here on dA who get more famous than others considering the skill work. Some people get lucky and some don't. It's not easy getting known around this site.
But the fact that people would want to fake art to get accolades makes me angrier than ever.
Here are two examples on what happens when you try to confront artists whom you are suspicious about!

I thought it was time to do a new challenge. From the poll, there seem to be plenty of you to take partA Cup of Creativity Challenge!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What's the point?
* For fun
* For the challenge
* To try something new with a non standard medium
* I'll feature everyone on my page for a week with the art from this challenge
* For my favourite piece, I'll give away my coffee creation as a prize (and if it sucks, I'll do you a drawing instead)
What are the rules?
* Paint a portrait using coffee as your medium and nothing else (well, maybe a tiny bit of graphite for your sketch and tiny touches of your choice of white/black medium for highlighting/darkening choice areas, but that's it!) Your art must be at least 90% coffee.
* Paint whoever you like, but it must be a painting that you have put time into; I won't accept halfhearted or obviously rushed entr

Colour challenge! Are you up for a little challenge?Colour challenge!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you do traditional art, chances are that you're familiar with this phenomenon: the black pencil/paint always runs out quicker than all the other colours. Right? Well, I decided to challenge myself to create a drawing without using the black pencil. And then I decided, hey, I'll just challenge my friends too!
So here's the challenge:
Create a colour drawing or painting using only colours, no black. That means no black pencil/paint, no grey pencils, no charcoal, no graphite, no black paper. And you have to use several different colours, or at least different shades of the same colour; drawing a sketch with only one colour defeats the purpose here.
No rules aside from that. White pencils/paint/chalk etc is allowed, and you can use whatever paper you want as long as it's not black (or really dark grey). It's really a challenge for traditional artists, since it's much harder to eliminate black in digital art, but if you want

Finals are coming up soon. I have 3 cumulative finals, 3 papers, 1 that tests on the 2nd half of the semester (so 2nd midterm? ), and 1 online test. Why I signed up for 8 classes is beyond me. Good part is, I'll be done with my bachelors degree in August (1 year early).
Anyways, I really have to start studying so I won’t log on to dA for a few weeks. Every time I log on, I'm like "30 minutes only" then I spend a few hours on here. I'm on Thanksgiving break right now, so I might be logging on a few times in the next couple of days but after that I won't log on again until December 16th. Not sure if I'll be able to handle life without dA.
I also decided to do a giant feature. I figured if my profile page is going to remain the same for the next few weeks then it might as well serve a purpose so here’s some amazing art for you to look at and fav! Take your time, it'll be here for a whi

Like many artists are doing to thank their watchers, I've decided to do the same.
Here's the principle:
Each of my watchers will be featured on my page for one week (where possible).
The order will be from the oldest to the newest. Nobody will be forgotten.
15 at 25 deviations will be featured at the same time, not more.. what gives you a good visibility.
Hoping that it will make you more famous on DeviantArt,
thanks again for your support!

The results of Draw Tom Ripley contest
It has been 4 and a half months since I started holding my first contest Draw Tom Ripley Contest which is a long journey full of new experiences. The origin is just an idea to cope with many deviants who kept asking me for points since I won 5,000 points from Plan Gone Wrong Contest last year. I told them to draw me Tom Ripley first and I'd give them some points in return. After I had got 2 pieces, I started to think "why not make it as a contest? It's gonna be fun."
A rant on 'professional' elitismI haven't submitted a journal entry to dA in almost a year. I had art block, and I've been very ill. For like, six months at a time. But I seem to be drawing now. So here I am. Submitting this as a journal instead of news article because I don't particularly want a bazillion people flaming me. I've pieced this together from conversations with people on twitter ( https://twitter.com/crimefish ).A rant on 'professional' elitism3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'd like to bitch about elitism. So here goes.
"I should know, I'm a professional."
Yes. And I should know because I work out of love for my craft, not for money. One is not innately better than the other! I can't count how many times I've seen some bonehead say someone is creating art 'wrong', and justify it with "I should know. I'm a professional." Really? REALLY? Do you know what the word means? At bare minimum, it means someone is dumb enough to pay you to draw. On its own, having professional status does not mean you know any better than I do. Being a professional

My name besides pbird12 is Paula McDonald (no Ronald or Old MacDonald jokes, please!). In my head I am 20 years old and will be forever; sadly, in earth years I am a wee bit older than this. I’m 33. I am Scottish and live with my fiancé and two beautiful children. My little boy is 2 and my little girl is 5.
Do you remember when you started drawing? Did something or someone in particular inspire you to pick up your pencils?
"I always drew as a kid and loved Art class at school, but was never able to draw people - I found it very frustrating. When I left school I went to college and studied Graphic Design for 3 years, and I think it turned me against art in general - I hated it! So, I didn't draw for more than 10 years. I started drawing realism when I joined dA, so about 15 months or so ago, and now I can draw people!"
