Light painting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source. It's a fun technique to dry out on a warm dark night For more information on light paintings or for tutorials, just Google around; it's a pretty popular and well documented technique. A quick search gives me: http://www.diyphotography.net/painting_with_light (if you prefer written tutorials) and http://lightpaintingphotography.com/light-painting-tutorials/jason-d-page/orb-techniques/ (if you prefer video tutorials). A tutorial for light painting with portraiture is also available on my website: http://jfotography.net/tutorials-light-painting-with-portraiture.php

The Social Currency of OpinionSocial networks, of which I count deviantART to be one for the sake of this journal, basically operate on personal opinion. The Social Currency of Opinion4 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the case of deviantART, opinion is most easily conveyed by the use of clicking on the giant, green +Favourites button on any given page of content. Recently we expanded +Favourites out to affect things like Journals, and this has been a sensible and positive change, although it met with a bit of criticism from some at first. In the case of Twitter, opinion is shared at its simplest level through Retweeting something, thereby letting all of your Followers know about what somebody said (somebody you likely agree with in a particular instance). In the case of Facebook, opinion is quickly shared by the famous Like button.
In all of these cases, users are presented the ability to quickly let their opinions be known, in some manner, without having to actually say anything in particular. The function says for itself "I approve of this," and while generally w

It doesn't really exactly feel like that long ago when I first started visiting dA and now it's already been a decade.
So kinda for myself (and also anyone possibly interested) here's a journal post recapping my last 10 years~ (Also sort of my journal in photography too, I guess.)
May 17 2002
I signed up on dA when someone in the drawing group I hung out with told me to check out his works here. I was only 14 then. I didn't use dA a lot at the time because it looked like this: http://web.archive.org/web/20030426063919/http://www.deviantart.com/
I was on a 15" 1024x768 display and the ad banner + dA header took up half my screen on every page load. Did not like. >_>
I dropped by dA every now and then, in Sept I suddenly found it a lot more user-friendly, the new version: http://web.archive.org/web/20030922013355/http://www.deviantart.com/
I added dA to my daily visit and I started mak

Smaller dA thumbnail scriptWant to get rid of the absolutely horrendous recent dA update of ugly, massive, unorganized, unprofessional thumbnails that I turned off beta to escape from but IT SOMEHOW STILL FOUND ME???Smaller dA thumbnail script3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Just install this amazing new browser script written by rotane, which not only shrinks the thumbnails back to a reasonable size, but also gets rid of the awkward light-background problem for wide deviations.
THANKS rotane!!!! Please +fave and spread it around if you like it!

But even though temporary, it did changed my perspective on some matters.
It's weird how much the internet can become an influence, and how this process goes so unnoticed. At a certain point the countless voices of people around you blend into a continuous buzz. A buzz that you soon get so familiar with that you forget there was a life before it. I guess that's what social media does in general; creating a buzz. An artificial need for you to continuously be online and check your messages, because you might just miss something otherwise. Life, in general, has become so infused with the internet that it sometimes scares me. I'm part of the internet industry. Hell, I even made it my job! But even I sometimes find myself wondering where the time has gone that I could work on an artwork for hours straight, without feeling that creeping itch to check my messages.
The last few weeks before the break, I've repeatedly felt bad about
Publish a Journal to Multiple Places!New! Post to multiple places!Publish a Journal to Multiple Places!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since the release of Sta.sh and Sta.sh Writer, there's been one feature in particular that we've been itching to release, and we're happy to announce that it's ready! Sta.sh Writer now allows for publication to multiple outlets, including your Gallery, Journal, or Group Journals.
How does it work?
1. Head to Sta.sh Writer and begin writing your entry.
2. Choose a skin for your Group from the right hand panel.
3. When you're ready to publish, choose any combination of your Journal, the Journal Portal (browseable by all deviants), and your Groups of which you are in an administrative class.
These options are perfect for those who may want to post the same message to their personal Journal and one or more of their Groups.
Keep in mind!
Submitters, be sure that you have the appropriate privileges to post Journals and/or deviati
Design tips: Typography Avoid the use of the font Optima, particularly for luxury or similarly "fancy" types of clients. It looks generally dated and plain.Design tips: Typography3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Try not to pair different sans-serif fonts (ex: Arial and Helvetica), but if you do, do not use fonts that are similar. The key is to use fonts that are distinctly different, such as a condensed sans for headlines and regular sans like Helvetica or Verdana for subheads or body copy. If you use two that are similar, it will look like you mistakenly didn't update all your text with the same font.
If you want to pair a serif font with a sans-serif or vice versa, there are 3 options you should use to make your decisions:
1) Select fonts made by the same typographer, or
2) Select fonts made around the same time period, or
3) Select fonts with similarly shaped characters
(Note: The reason why the rules may be different between pairing serif/sans-serif fonts and pairing two sans-serif fonts is that serif fonts have ex
The New Street Photographer's ManifestoIn my last post I asked if anyone knew of some great female photographers. I asked because I was working on a street photography book which would feature inspiring photographers from around the globe. The New Street Photographer's Manifesto - http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-New-Street-Photographers-Manifesto/dp/1908150467/
It's a handy guide that goes through everything you need to know about street photography, and it features a showcase with some highly talented up and coming inspiring photographers many of whom I've had the pleasure of knowing thanks to this place right here - deviantArt.
So if you're interested in street photography at all, or know anyone who is, make sure you snap up a copy : ) It's not expensive, especially when you see who it features!

Around the block and back to dAI've been on other art sharing sites. But in the end I always come back to dA.Around the block and back to dA4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Why? I don't really think dA offers anything special in terms of browsing features, options, or other amenities. Its forums are just like any other forums. Frankly its journal and news system has become a machine for spewing out drama.
But there's something special about its people.
Somehow dA has managed to bring together people from all around the world who share a common appreciation for art; people who show their appreciation for art either by faving, watching and supporting other artists or by contributing their own artworks and striving towards improving their art.
People here don't have a concept of a "repost." To us, it's simply art theft. If you didn't make it from scratch from your own two hands, don't even attempt to put your name on it and pass it off as your creation here.
People here don't obsess over front page. We don't give thank you speeches for getting on front page as if it's some life ch

ast week we published the video of Josh Wattles, makepictures Fan Art Law panel from Comic-Con. An educative, passionate and very enlightening conversation soon followed in the comments section. You can participate in that conversation here.

Being a member of the deviantART community might be the most important support system a young artists could ever hope to have. That being said, there is also the problem of finding a way to stand out when surrounde
Happy Birthday DeviantART! Welcome to WonderlandHappy Birthday DeviantART!1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I find myself delighted to lay my rather large eyes on you. A purrfectly delicious mystery awaits you. Won't you come this way?
I've been a bad kitty-- a very naughty, naughty feline, indeed. You see, today is Alice's Unbirthday, and all the inhabitants of Wonderland had planned to join her and the Mad Hatter for tea and cake. But, the Mad Hatter, being quite a bit off his rocker, is requiring that everyone wear a hat to the party. Anyone without a hat cannot attend.
Whoops! Mysteriously, *smile* all the hats in Wonderland have gone missing. What a shame, what a shame. Whatever shall we do?
I know what we shall do. You and I, stranger, we shall go to the party together. I hear the cake is delicious this year, and there will be plenty for us.
Except, wait! HA! You cannot!!! You have no hat, either! I suppose you'll have to stay here, too, then. Very well. Goodbye.

This feature will be rolled out to everyone over the next few days.
DeviantART's thumbnail images just got bigger and better! Starting today, we've increased the size of deviantART's thumbnails and, by popular demand from the community, we're also giving you a "Thumbnail Grid" mode.

A little reason or two: we bought our first real home on november 1st 2013 and I actually recently got another new job after working 6 months in a freaking hell hole. Since the end of march I have such an awesome job, still working in fashion, work even more hours, get paid way better and I have the sweetest and funniest co-workers ever I really feel like I'm back on track again. The only thing is that I don't have much time for doing a ton of new shoots, but when I do, I will def. upload more new works here on dA.
I missed you guys!
All Resolutions and Life StuffGoing forward, I'll only be uploading the 1440x900 resolution of my wallpapers. In truth, DeviantART has been the lowest source of traffic lately for any of my works. I don't think I'll delete my account or leave the site, but I just won't be uploading the highest resolutions here going forward.
I am so happy to say I released my first major product since joining the team over at Makerbot Industries, a redesign of the Thingiverse website. Check it out if you have time. Such a great resource for 3D printable files and uploading your own to share with the community.

What's new with me, you ask? Leaving my personal life *completely* out of it, I've been starting off 2012 pretty awesomely with a bunch of new publication features. To see these new tear sheets and such, make sure you follow me at the official WinterWolf Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/WinterWolf-Studios/293443074174 . You can also find some random candid photos of myself with my son, and odd bits and pieces of things like that. Without an intern this year, my responses can be very slow, so messaging me on FB or sending me an e-mail at email@example.com is the best way to contact me currently.
Killian just turned 3 last month, and i'm turning 26 in a week. Crazy, crazy.
To answer some popular notes - yes you may draw/paint any of these photos, but please credit WinterWolf Studios for the reference photo and make sure to show me. I love seeing fan art, always makes me smile. I still wish I could
Introducing RoutelinesSimply roads. Every road.Introducing Routelines3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Intricate posters of cities from around the world outlined only by their roads in beautiful detail. Each poster includes the entire official boundaries of a city as well as surrounding areas. Several high-quality materials, sizes, and colors with framing options are available.
Routelines was inspired by data. After working on several recent data visualization projects focusing on open data, I got the itch to create something physical to which everyone could instantly relate.
Roads are everywhere. We travel them daily and rarely give them a second thought. They outline our neighborhoods and cities and sometimes define cultural boundaries. They're usually only visible on maps, covered by labels and accompanied by landmarks. I wanted to see what they look like on their own.
Each city appears to have its own personality and sub-personalities based on patterns drawn by its roads. Whether or not these personalities coincide with its culture is somet
