Fear of CreativityA rather unfortunate, yet commonplace problem amongst creative minds is one of fear: fear of being creative, fear of making something that could be terrible, fear of rejection, fear of judgment, fear of failure. This root fear seems driven by every artist's desire to make great work. After all, that is why creative people createto build or define beauty as they see fit. So when inspiration strikes, there is both a drive to create and an element of fear holding back. The apparent duality of this situation is actually multifaceted.Fear of Creativity3 years ago in Personal More Like This
First, there is the general fear of failure. Nobody wants to fail, creatively or otherwise, even though great minds have shown us that failure is necessary for improvement. This fear of failure manifests itself as hesitation and self-doubt, ultimately causing procrastination or just a delayed start, or even destroying the urge to create altogether.
Secondly, the fear of judgment. Fearing what others might think of the work, fearing comments of negativity
Lots of bitching...I haven't been on DA all that much lately due to work commitments, but it seems like every time I log on here people are bitching about this, bitching about that.Lots of bitching...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Look, at the end of the day, this site provides a service. You can choose to pay for it, or you can choose to not pay for it. It works either way. If you really don't like it, not only should you not pay for it, but don't use it. No one is forcing you to.
It seems like a lot of people seem to think that being a member of this site gives them ownership of it. It doesn't. Be grateful it exists. Be happy that it is (now) profitable. For a long time it wasn't. The people who work on it deserve to make some money - they work hard.
If you don't agree with any of this, I think you're lacking in perspective. There's nothing keeping you here if you don't want to be. I think DA does a great job of listening to a vast community and trying to make changes to please it's members. It can't be incredibly dynamic and flexible to accomodate e
Site Update: December 1, 2011About a month ago we announced Sta.sh and Sta.sh Writer -- not as a hot topic, but we soft-launched to the hq membership and to the more savvy deviants who follow along when we release things.Site Update: December 1, 20113 years ago in Personal More Like This
Development of both products has never stopped and will continue in an ongoing manner moving forward.
Below, I've outlined a change log that tracks recent Sta.sh progress and also identified Known Issues that we're aware of and actively working on.
You now have the option to include/exclude your journal from the Journal Portal, and from your Journal Tab's new "Featured" section.
The Journal Portal in the footer of deviantART now pulls from the Journals category but excludes all "Personal" posts. This means, you must categorize your Journal on submission for it to even qualify to appear in the footer of dA. This has substantially increased the quality of posts that appear there.
We were having some issues editing old articles within Groups, and those bugs have been fixe
New! Cubism Messenger Bag Design Challenge!New! Cubism Messenger Bag Design Challenge!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
What comes to mind when you hear the name Pablo Picasso? That’s right, it’s time to break it down, Cubism-style! For the first time ever, we are hosting a Messenger Bag Design Challenge! We want you to create an original design for the flap of the bag in the style of Cubism.
For this challenge, we are defining Cubism as an art style in which instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from multiple viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often, the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create a shallow ambiguous space.
Your design should appear on the flap of the bag (below the zipper), using only <
Site Update: January 12, 2012It's 2012, and it's time for the first Site Update of the year!Site Update: January 12, 20123 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just a little while ago, we posted the latest Sta.sh updates and asked you for more feedback. Now, in this update, you'll find all the feedback from those 500+ comments gathered into the Known Issues section below, just after the Change Log, which will tell you about some brand new features launching today, as well as all the bugs fixed since the last update.
The last update was all about Sta.sh, and there are some pretty big Sta.sh announcements this time too, but this update features any changes that have been made to deviantART, Profiles, Messages, Sta.sh, everything!
Many have asked for the ability to share a whole stack of Sta.sh files, as well as just one at a time. Well now you can! In any stack on your Sta
A Valentine Birthday Wish from +SpyedAll of my birthdays have always been about stuff. Stuff I don't want, stuff I definitely don't need. This year for my birthday on Valentines Day I want to focus the love I have from my friends and family to build a WELL in a developing country. They cost $5000. And for the next 20 years this well will provide fresh drinking water to a village.A Valentine Birthday Wish from +Spyed3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In Angelo's words...
All of my birthdays have always been about stuff. Stuff I don't want, stuff I definitely don't need.
I'm surrounded by very giving people, and I'm always honored by how gracious my friends are, but when a guy gets to a
certain age, you kinda just buy the video games and books and music right when you want them, you know?
This year, I decided to do something a little different for my birthday. I was introduced recently to a charity

The Street Photography of Chris Weeks
It was only after many long frustrating hours of trying to describe what’s so special about the photographs of cweeks...
That I finally realized I was trying to describe something that wasn’t there.
I finally realized that the magical something that sets cweeks’ works apart from others is that his camera disappears. There is no sense as you look at his photos of street scenes and other captures that you are looking through a lens, even the lens of a particularly talented photographer. There is a sense of simply walking through a town and seeing what you happen to see – without the

Living Rainbow Taking Flight
The vibrant digital paintings of alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable.
The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.

Cold ConventionBy Saturday my son and I may really be able to say we hiked x number of miles in the snow and cold just to get home. We're attending First Contact in Queens on Valentine's Day. I'm not feeling very good ii general, not sick, but just not in the mood. I've been having something of a rough time at shows lately. There's a lot of meanness out there. I didn't sign up for abuse, or to be abused. It's sort of like putting yourself in the stockades with a free basket of tomatoes at you feet. The fans are always great, I like to talk to people, but only at my booth. On panels it's very, very hard. And I think there's a growing confusion about what I consider my story to be. I draw, I like to do it in spite of any hardship. I draw for industry and for myself, which is all that matters. It sort of hurts to hear people say that they want to read my personal story, not my comics or my book. If my personal human story is all that matters out of my whole career than I've done something wrong. I reallCold Convention3 months ago in Personal More Like This

On Photo editorsAs I do various bits of work for the school web page, and try my hand at photo-essays, and snatches of documentary video, I'm becoming more aware of the role of photo editors. It doesn't really exactly feel like that long ago when I first started visiting dA and now it's already been a decade.
So kinda for myself (and also anyone possibly interested) here's a journal post recapping my last 10 years~ (Also sort of my journal in photography too, I guess.)
May 17 2002
I signed up on dA when someone in the drawing group I hung out with told me to check out his works here. I was only 14 then. I didn't use dA a lot at the time because it looked like this: http://web.archive.org/web/20030426063919/http://www.deviantart.com/
I was on a 15" 1024x768 display and the ad banner + dA header took up half my screen on every page load. Did not like. >_>
I dropped by dA every now and then, in Sept I suddenly found it a lot more user-friendly, the new version: http://web.archive.org/web/20030922013355/http://www.deviantart.com/
I added dA to my daily visit and I started mak
Light Painting with TutorialsPainting With LightLight Painting with Tutorials3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Light painting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source. It's a fun technique to dry out on a warm dark night For more information on light paintings or for tutorials, just Google around; it's a pretty popular and well documented technique. A quick search gives me: http://www.diyphotography.net/painting_with_light (if you prefer written tutorials) and http://lightpaintingphotography.com/light-painting-tutorials/jason-d-page/orb-techniques/ (if you prefer video tutorials). A tutorial for light painting with portraiture is also available on my website: http://jfotography.net/tutorials-light-painting-with-portraiture.php

The Social Currency of OpinionSocial networks, of which I count deviantART to be one for the sake of this journal, basically operate on personal opinion. The Social Currency of Opinion3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the case of deviantART, opinion is most easily conveyed by the use of clicking on the giant, green +Favourites button on any given page of content. Recently we expanded +Favourites out to affect things like Journals, and this has been a sensible and positive change, although it met with a bit of criticism from some at first. In the case of Twitter, opinion is shared at its simplest level through Retweeting something, thereby letting all of your Followers know about what somebody said (somebody you likely agree with in a particular instance). In the case of Facebook, opinion is quickly shared by the famous Like button.
In all of these cases, users are presented the ability to quickly let their opinions be known, in some manner, without having to actually say anything in particular. The function says for itself "I approve of this," and while generally w

But even though temporary, it did changed my perspective on some matters.
It's weird how much the internet can become an influence, and how this process goes so unnoticed. At a certain point the countless voices of people around you blend into a continuous buzz. A buzz that you soon get so familiar with that you forget there was a life before it. I guess that's what social media does in general; creating a buzz. An artificial need for you to continuously be online and check your messages, because you might just miss something otherwise. Life, in general, has become so infused with the internet that it sometimes scares me. I'm part of the internet industry. Hell, I even made it my job! But even I sometimes find myself wondering where the time has gone that I could work on an artwork for hours straight, without feeling that creeping itch to check my messages.
The last few weeks before the break, I've repeatedly felt bad about
