EDIT I was blown away to find that I had won a place in the contest. I have seen a lot of really awesome entries and I do believe that more of the "just makeup" entries should have placed. as a lot of people mention. and it is not particularly fair that photoshop users tend to be favored in contests and such. But it kind of irks me when people complain that prosthetics aren't masks or are "too easy"
I didn't go to school for makeup at all. not at ALL. I decided one day to spend some of my commission money to purchase some mask latex, some plasteline clay, some plaster and a plastic face form to begin working on making prosthetics any way I knew how. basically from looking really hard at how it's done through stuff on the internet. This process was not easy. sure. I could have just sculpted the original face out of oven bake clay or something and it probably wouldn't have been so ridiculed in such a way?? you think that's harder? I made the sculpt, made a mold out of plaster, made seperate molds for the gills. put it all together after I casted it in pigmented latex. painted the thing... put it on with a little spirit gum, and some random normal eyeshadow to blend it into my face which is all I had. I am NOT a skilled prosthetic maker or wearer. so you can get that out of your head right off the bat. lol. ----------------------------------------------------
This is for the contest... the mask is made by me can be seen here [link] ...so is that cute little necklace hehe.
Well guys this image was a big challenge...There was two things that got envolved on this, time and hardware...My computer basically crashed couple times or more doing this painting and and even lose 3 hours of working, unfortuneatly. Second I knew about this contest in less than a week. So working full-time and trying to find the time to make this concept was a big challenge, but it sort of work out pretty well at the end, thought.
Thanks a lot for the people who shared their opinions and thoughts.
Wings made of scythe blades, a female form with a mouth that is hungry for life, and a heart that took the form of a black hole. My monster, which personifies death itself, tends to show that death is not limited to life. Death is so strong that it can destroy anything from things as small as cells to stars and entire galaxies themselves.
First time participating in one of Deviant art contest, and quite loving it. I haven't spend much time doing digital illustrations because I got caught up with college work.
I have to say that its awesome to see the other entries and what other people came up with, some of those concepts are just mind blowing. I'm just happy that I dont need to choose the winner, there is way to many that I'd like to see win
WOOO! finished! I was so happy to do this piece. Some of my favorite summer memories were making chalk drawings on the sidewalk. It's so much fun to turn that dreary cement into a work of art, and every one gets to enjoy it!
I worked on my entry during my vacation. My family and I visited this really small island beach on the coast of NC. There really is nothing there but adorable little houses in striking colors (an orange house with bright blue shutters!) spread cheerfully along a glowing white strip of beach. I was really inspired by all the beautiful colors that were there and really tried to incorporate that care free kaleidoscope feeling the island gave off. I think you can tell I had a blast doing this. I was so energized, just enjoying the sun and the scenery.
(When I saw this contest in my news feed I had to giggle. My boyfriend of two years drinks Dr. Pepper religiously, SO much that we all tease him about it (in a good natured way). For him Dr. Pepper will probably be a life long love affair. So what better way to say 'I love you' than devote some art to his Dr Pepper affinity. I really enjoy this piece and I hope my boyfriend will too!)
