Protecting Your Legal Rights - DigitallyRecently I saw a notice from a fellow deviant about finding some of his photos online. Stolen from DA where he generously shares them to be used on a porn site. Obviously this is illegal, a violation of copyright law. DeviantART makes that perfectly clear in the terms and conditions when you sign up, and you are legally bound by them even if you just click "I Accept" without reading them. Small consolation to an artist who must now fight to have his work protected under the law. Another deviant, also a photographer, has a very serious discussion on his page about it. You can find that discussion here http://jeanluc44.deviantart.com/journal/25899401/.Protecting Your Legal Rights - Digitally4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Why should we care about this? Well I'll give you two reasons. Any artist will never share their work if it will be stolen, so where will you go to find quality art like this for free hmm? Just as bad, the artists that do share their work are forced to watermark it in an attempt to prevent theft. Watermarks are like locks on a door, they a

PE: Comparing Copics and WatercoloursTraditional ArtPE: Comparing Copics and Watercolours1 month ago in Art Features More Like This
When starting out in traditional media it can be a little intimidating to decide upon what medium to start or try working with. After seeing what some amazing artists can do with these traditional tools, it may be difficult to choose which one to try out. This article endeavours to cover two such mediums, Copics (an alcohol based marker) and watercolours (a water based paint), starting to compare them for the newcomer.
Costs and Initial Set up
The initial cost of any traditional medium can be expensive as several things need to be purchased at the same time. There are often cheaper alternatives to the paints and markers that can be substituted.
Watercolours come in a few varieties, the two most common being pans or tubes. A set of Winsor & Newton pans (12) is around $22USD whilst a set of 10 tubes is about $35USD. They can be purchased individually
PE: Tips for Blending with MarkersArtists ToolboxPE: Tips for Blending with Markers4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
This article is to give some handy tips and tricks for blending with alcohol based markers (Copic, Pantone, Tria, etc). The majority of the article is demonstrated using Copic markers, but the techniques used can be applied to the different marker types.
Marker papers come in many shapes and sizes. The common ones are:
Bleedproof / Bleedfree Marker Paper - 70 gsm paper which is thin and has a right side and a 'wrong' side, often comes in pads of 50 sheets and is quite cheap.
Manga Drawing Pad - 250gsm paper which is thick and textured, often comes in pads of 10-20 or as single sheets, can be expensive.
Japanese Manga Paper - thick, but smooth, more designed for inks and screentones, but can be used for colour pieces.
Previous tutorial on papers is available: Guide

Photoshop: The Unsharp ToolArtists' Tools WeekPhotoshop: The Unsharp Tool4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Today I'm going to tell you a little bit about the unsharp tool in Photoshop, and what you can do with it. This is going to be brief, so I won't be going into every single little thing you can do with this magical tool as there are billions of possibilities. However, I'll be showing you how I use it in portrait photography, most especially in order to heighten certain physical traits such as freckles!
We're going to be working with one photo during this brief tutorial, I will show you the finalized version that I posted onto DeviantArt, and I will then show you the steps taken in order to reach that end result. (I will only be focusing on the unsharp tool aspects, though, not the other finalizing touches I used to get my final result)
As a side note, I've recently gone through a lot of laptop problems, so my photoshop presets and whatnot are not back to normal, so I don't recommend you pay attention to them.

Engaging Members in a Smaller GroupCommunity WeekEngaging Members in a Smaller Group4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
The Groups system has made it very easy for members of fandoms and mediums to come together, and whilst members are what makes a group work, sometimes smaller groups seem to lack the attention that the larger ones get. A small group can be just as fun and rewarding to be a member of as a large group.
This article has a couple of ideas for how to keep up interest in a smaller, more niche group. Some ideas may also be useful for medium to larger groups.
Making the group easy to navigate and understand can be done with thoughtful use of folders. In most groups the folder types are governed by the group content and purpose. The default folder in all groups is the 'Featured' folder; often this is used to showcase certain submissions rather than being the folder everything goes into. One can use the Featured folder to highlight a examples of what the group is about or to reward members

Draw With Us #7 - SkinHey guys,Draw With Us #7 - Skin2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm sorry to have disappeared for so long! I had terrible internet for a long time (which makes it impossible to search resources) and then my personal life has been a massive distraction. I have managed to take the time to write a journal for this month at least and the topic is Skin
To start with, skin colour is one of the hardest things for me to pin point on a palette. I always go too pink! So I find these swatches incredibly useful
These are tutorials are on understanding skin tone and how to use those colours

Stale pizza, a story about commissions. Art in the ProfessionsStale pizza, a story about commissions. 3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Imagine, if you will, eating the same food for years. Is it lobster? Is it macaroni and cheese? Pizza? Sushi perhaps? Now imagine it on the first day. Imagine it on the fourth day. Imagine it on the forty-forth day. Then the ritual turns into months upon months, until finally the years are a blur. Would pizza be a prize or a punishment, after years?
My thirtieth commission was what they had all been, women in peril. The stage and script were identical: elbows tight, chest out, a nefarious beast with the damsel sporting an occasional look of panic or pleasure. The money was good, the clientele nice and the attention noticeable. Life in the ivory tower was good, albeit a tad naughty.
But when my thirty-fifth commission rolled in, the same song, the same dance; I found myself staring at my paper. It was my enemy. I couldn’t do it anymore. Just like that. My cup had runnith

To cure this problem of yours, I have a few easy steps that will help you prepare a good tutorial for beginners! I've divided this article into a few steps, so that you can get a simple idea for the information provided. When we make a tutorial, try to keep it in mind that it shouldn't be very long as the readers or viewers may become tired/bored of reading it. So, it should be of an adequate
The common misconceptionWhen giving workshops last weekend, I was confronted with something at least remarkable. The common misconception1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I had a random chat with a girl that apparently knew me from DeviantArt. We a friendly conversation about art such. It wasn't that strange, until she concluded her message with.
"It's nice talking to you. I always wanted to know what you were like. You know... since you draw so well"
And I was like... "Huh? What?"
Some people see me as a talented writer or artist, others (including myself) raise the bar even higher.
But regardless of what you see as skilled or not, I don't think there's such a thing as 'them' and 'us' in the art world. It's too small of a world. We're too alike. And I think most of us aren't exactly prone to living a celebrity lifestyle anyway. Bitches & bling don't match well with the usually quiet lifestyle an artist prefers.
When I started doing painting, I looked up to many of the lo
