Due to my volunteer work with the Avengers Initiative (as Supergirl), I was asked to submit a Marvel character costume for membership with West Coast Avengers. Originally, I had two other characters of interest, but ultimately neither of them felt right, and I prolonged applying, wondering if I was going to find a Marvel lady who resonated with me as well as Supergirl does.
This is (basically) how the conversation went down:
WCA: "Rose, you need a Marvel character to be officially brought into our group."
Me: "K."
WCA: "Shield agents are very easy to put together for the sake of the initial application."
Me: "Mreh."
WCA: "Captain America could always use USO girls. How about you do one of the USO girls?"
Me: "I'd rather be Captain America."
WCA: "In that case, let me introduce you to American Dream."
So. I picked up her comics and I truly loved her, her story, and her history. So I said "yes, Dream, I'll strap myself into a unitard for you."
On a more personal level, my grandparents came to the USA during WW2 from Russia. They didn't like to talk about what happened during the war, and were grateful to have have gotten over here at all. Most of my earliest memories are of my grandpa. Though I mourn the loss of our eastern European culture due to his adamant insistence on assimilation, I know that ultimately, my life was improved because of him. He'd be hella proud of this today. This one's for you, gramps.
FEELS GOOD.
