Art theft - my opinionI've had a increasing number of messages about art theft on DeviantArt recently. I think it's great that this community is concerned that artist's work is being used appropriately, and that individuals have the time and energy to draw attention to potentially contentious posts. I'd like to express my gratitude to those who have contacted me and hope that you will continue to do so if you feel it necessary.
However, I think it's important to get this stuff into perspective. Copying my work for practice isn't theft. It's extremely flattering for me and an entirely legitimate way to study. I copied other artist's work when I was starting out and I learned a great deal from those exercises. I'd suggest that there are many more accomplished artists than me whose work could be studied, but I have no problem with my work being used in this way.

Just about the only thing I don't like about is the strong cyan tint, which seems to be more associated with the photo of the painting rather than then painting itself. Overall it's definitely one of the best derivative works I've yet to see based on my photos. I really enjoyed exploring how all the little details differed between the two.
Rpriet1 did not ask for my permission, or inform me of using my photo. A DA gallery moderator just messaged to ask whether I would like the deviation removed, and the DD revoked. I think most artists who've had their work "stolen" would be outraged, but for me the answer was a very unambiguous no. This is a complicated issue, and I think that the vast majority of the readers will disagree with me at this point, so let me explain my position carefully.
