A young woman named Brea loved making art, and practiced jumping all day long to become the very best in all her town. But one day, she was completely stumped. She looked around her room, full of art pieces featuring mystical vikings, sci-fi landscapes of a futuristic Los Angeles, and a portrait of Michael Shanks that looked so real, you could start a conversation with it. But nothing inspired her. Had she really created everything there was to create? Depressed, she looked out her window, and made a wish on a nearby Korea for inspiration to return to her. The next morning, she sprung out of bed, and used her skill in jumping to create the most beautiful deviation depicting kites bowling anyone had ever seen. That night, she shouted out the window, "Thanks, Korea!"

In a rush of golden wings, Milgazia landed. The mouth of the cave was ahead of him, dark, save a few fairy lights. But it was the light behind him that was much more worrying than the blackness ahead.
He shook his reptilian head at this thought. The Pillar of Light was far, far away. No doubt the followers of the Fire Dragon King would be looking into the matter with all the vigorous purpose that they were known for. Milgazia could only hope to protect those in his province. The remnant on Dragon's Peak had more than enough to attend to without borrowing troubles.
He stepped into the cavern—a faraway retreat from the bustling, interconnected system in which his community lived. The inside of the cave was musty and relatively bare. Followers of the Aqualord were not much for tools and trappings. There was a bed of soft, dry grasses; a small share of the harvest; a comb from one of the hives his people carefully maintained; a collection of various mountain he

Chapter 10. Be Our Guest.
Avoch would have normally taken two weeks of heavy traveling to reach from Achaea. But a mere four days of light travel later, Xellos and Filia were very nearly in the highlands. Xellos's wind-powered carriage had certainly saved them a lot of time, and all in all it should've been a nice, leisurely trip, but the appearance of the dragons had sapped all of the picturesque, picnic feel from the expedition.
Filia watched the trail behind them flee. Xellos was sitting on the driver's platform and she was sitting with her back to him. "You don't think " Filia began, "that they'll show up again."
"Hmmm," Xellos hummed thoughtfully. "I don't think it's very likely. For the time being at least our reptilian friends have decided that assassination is not their best option. It would be impossible for them to kill you or spirit you away as long as I'm around.

"I'll kill him," Filia vowed in high, scandalized voice. She stared across the dining hall at the purple-haired fiend sitting just two tables away and cheerily giving his order to the waitress.
"I don't really think that's going to work, Miss Filia," Amelia said nervously, with a discouraging wave of her hand.
Filia, with a great deal of effort, managed to shift her gaze from her least favorite traveling companion over to Amelia, her seat-mate. Even though they all traveled in one party, they often took up several tables at restaurants. This was because Lina and Gourry required so much space when they ate. First off, they tended to order more food than could possibly fit on the table at one time, so there wasn't room for anyone else's meal. That wasn't such a big deal because any meal at the same table as Lina and Gourry became their meal. What really worried anyone forced to sit next to them was the flying arms that flapped i

Political CorrectnessPolitical Correctness – A New Age Civil WarPolitical Correctness9 years ago in Editorial More Like This
Political correctness - a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities should be eliminated (Webster.com), started out as a rather good idea. Nowadays it has gotten out of hand. Instead of making everything equal, it has shifted the balance of power from the majority to the minorities.
Take the "African-Americans" for example. When Americans first started to make amends for the way African-Americans were treated, people started to say "blacks" instead of "cotton-pickin-niggas". This was completely understandable, as the previous term was pretty derogatory. Now it has gone from "blacks" to "African-Americans", which really doesn't make much sense. You can't be an African-American unless you were born in Africa. For this to be truly equal all whites should be called European-Americans, as being called white is racist. As Charelton Heston said in his speech "Winni

The sky was in the last throes of sunsetorange only remained in faint traces and close to the ground. Day was all but dead and the eventide was only just flowing in. For the moment the world was at a point in between. What it was exactly at that point had been a matter of heated discussion between the dragon and the demon as they walked the lantern lit path through the park. Filia had called it twilight, but Xellos seemed to think that it couldn't be proper twilight until the first stars showed up. Filia had never heard of such a thing and demanded to know what he'd call it. Xellos suggested gloaming which Filia instantly shot down because she felt it sounded 'stupid.' Xellos actually seemed a little offended on behalf of the word. In the end, they'd decided to call it dusk and leave it at that. Dusk was all about happy mediums anyway.

On Detailing CharactersOn Detailing Characters5 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
"Your need to tell me absolutely everything, as if every tiny detail were just so integral to the plot, was supremely annoying." You can always tell when an author has gone through many drafts, and when an author has gone through just a few. There are many details that work their way into writing that don't necessarily have to be there. Some of these unnecessary details may offer seasoning to the story---mood, tone, or serve to draw attention to something specific; just be careful, as too much seasoning can ruin the flavor of your soup. You don't want it too bland, but you don't want it too salty, either. This is what makes being a writer nicer than being a cook; you can add more detail or edit superfluous detail out without destroying the piece, whereas a soup might be ruined with too much fiddling. By trial and error, you can find a good balance and I encourage you to experiment this way. To play on one of Gandalf's quotes: "A good author is neither too detailed nor too sparse, but p

I'm going to try and briefly cover World Building specifically for Fantasy and Science Fiction (though it will apply in general to any setting), both major and minor Characters, and some basics of Timeline here. I am not going to walk you step by step through how to write your own story, but you should (hopefully) get some useful tips out of this.
I never used to organize my novels before I started writing. I have so many stories in my head, I would just pick one and start writing. I didn't have trouble keeping to the same details of a given character because I knew them so well. But after taking such a long break from writing Missing Puzzle Pieces, I really needed to do some serious work. I don't remember all the details I had in my head back when I started... in fact, I've completely forgotten the original ending. For those of you who don't know my story, which starts

Stanley was shaking in fear, his eyes unable to leave the body of the rapidly cooling Lieutenant Drash. He sank to his knees as Amelia walked away from him and took up a place at Zelgadis's side.
Lina's eyes widened from her balcony hiding place. "I see," she said. "Zel only drew out the fight so long to buy enough time for the Lafas Seed on Amelia to wear off." She paused and thought for a moment. " That's awfully codependent when you think about it."
Zelgadis dropped his useless, broken sword, and shared a determined look with Amelia before the two turned their gazes back on the sniveling Stanley. The once proud Lord seemed to have been destroyed by the death of his highest ranking officer. Whether it was because Drash was actually dear to him or because he now feared for his life with his protector dead was hard to say. At this point, it was hard to care too.

It's a trial is what it is!
I was told before I left the temple that the outside world was full of temptations that could pull even the most virtuous dragon from the path of right, but I suppose I never paid too much attention I just thought how bad could it really be?
It turns out quite bad.
I guess that makes it sound worse than it actually is. The outside world isn't really tempting in a blatantly sinful, debaucheries on every corner kind of way. That would have been easy to resist. It's tempting in a more down to earth, subtle, paradoxically harder to resist kind of way.
Human culture is just so full of distractions!
I mean, really! Parkways, theatres, music, sporting events, restaurants that sell every kind of food imaginable (and unimaginable), and everywhere it's stores, stores, stores! How do humans ever manage to get anything important done wi

It all started because Xellos needed a place to keep his books. He didn't exactly subscribe to the notion that knowledge was power, but knew all too well that knowledge was the best way to leverage power. Not only that, but he also knew the location of every five-star ice cream parlor in the entire world. That was something worth bragging about.
He supposed that he could've kept them on the astral side but well books seem to sort of belong on shelves. And he didn't like reading on the astral side anyway. The constantly shifting light sources made the prospect rather annoying.
And what is a house but a place to store shelves?
So he'd gotten a space of his ownnot to live in, but to keep things in. It worked out well not only for books but for any items that he had to eh 'confiscate' because they were too dangerous for human hands, but were not to be destroyed. Plus he could read mid-air without arousing any

Zelgadis said nothing, but watched the circling man warily, sword in hand.
"I am Lieutenant Hartwell of his Grace the Duke of Daellon's armed forces," he said, holding up a finger. "But under the employ of someone you know better."
Zelgadis grit his teeth. He knew that Stanley was up to no good! Admittedly the no good he'd imagined had largely consisted of wooing Amelia into marriage (which seemed kind of obvious now that he thought about it), but still! It counted!
"I won't bother to remember that," Zelgadis said, shifting his stance.
Lieutenant Hartwell smiled. It was a smile that said: 'I've seen all kinds of battl

She had a sort of intuition that was hard to miss and they couldn't help but notice that she seemed a little too well-informed about what kind of weather would be heading their way and who would be sick in the future. I'm not sure what to write. I've never really done this before.
Well, I guess that's not really true. I've probably started a diary at least half a dozen times. It just always seemed like such a good idea to me ever since I'd read the suggestion in a conduct novel growing up. I mean, it would be nice to be able to go over the events of my day to be able to better puzzle over themand of course to look back on and remember years down the line. And diary-keeping is supposed to be excellent for guiding the spiritual journeys of young ladies and keep them accountable for their behavior. But I don't think I've ever stuck with one journal for more than a week. I always meant to keep it up but it's so much harder to do than it sounds. Some days it would seem like nothing would happen that was worth writing down and other days it seemed

Ugh predictably enough it's been an absolute trial to get provisions. There weren't any stores intact left around the port and since I wouldn't dream of doing something as disgraceful as looting (sadly the same cannot be said for the residents of the town), I had to travel a bit down the coast to the next town over to purchase supplies. A lot of other people had the same idea, so it's pretty crowded.
