Leaderless Revolution for the 21st CenturyA little while ago, I read a book called The Leaderless Revolution: How Ordinary People will Take Power and Change Politics in the 21st Century by Carne Ross, a former member of the British Foreign Office and delegate of the UK mission to the UN who left his job after seeing how so-called "representatives" represent themselves and the interests of their biggest supporters (such as multinational corporations) rather than the people of the society who elected them or who they were appointed to represent. Ross believes that this removal of agency from the people themselves to representatives, and the alienation it causes, is responsible for much of the conflict in the world. Therefore, he supports a leaderless consensus-based directly democratic government, i.e., anarchism. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a year can fly by. I've made it a practice over the years to sit back and reflect on the year, what went well, what didn't and where I'd like to see the new year go. Still Life Food Photography Contest
Still life photography usually involves a set up - planning and careful execution of a shot. Food photography in particular takes a lot of preparation and the time to make a dish or an item of food aesthetically pleasing. So I thought it was about time we had a contest involving all elements! Your challenge is to create a brand shiny new Still Life Photography piece that features Food. Now the catch is you must be creative with the food. Entries will be considered carefully and if you are taking photos of food that someone else has made, then you need to step up the mark and make it as unique as possible. Lots of people quote the above at me when I start to moan that I've taken a billion photographs on a specific day and none of them turned out to be worth anything. The truth is you might take a thousand or you might take 4 photographs before you unearth something that's recognized, liked and respected. It doesn't matter either way because you're creating first and foremost for yourself. When you start to take money for your hobby is when you need to look at technique, skills and actual finished product to ensure that you are meeting the sort of quality criteria needed. So whilst the quote is a famous thought - provoking one - it isn't necessarily true!

That said, there's another aspect of categories which, sadly, often have been overlooked. I'm referring to the Gallery Descriptions. Over time, gallery descriptions have fallen into disarray, leaving many categories with old and outdated descriptions, others with incorrect descriptions, and yet others without a description at all.
At the moment, gallery descriptions are most prominent when submitting new deviations. However, as part of this project, we hope that they will become more evident as you browse the site. One of our goals is to make a simple, navigable category structure focusing on descriptions that are clear, concise, and consistent.

You don't need a studio or amazingly fancy lighting in order to achieve some of the most popular still life photography shots that you see on deviantART. I take most of my still life photography shots on the window sill in my bedroom because the colour is neutral and the lighting best.
