Live the dream, don't talk about it!Doug TenNapel, independent comics creator, is an inspiration to me in many ways. He has a fun, accessible art style that is dramatic and fresh. His story telling is always askew in the best of ways. I don't think I've read one of his graphic novels without having some smiles and a surprise or two along the way. On top of that, he is outspoken about almost everything in his life. (I think of him as the Rush Limbaugh of comics- oh man, that sounds really bad, but early Rush, not present day Rush, if that helps.) I agree with most things he states on Facebook. BUT- the thing I am most inspired about him is his drive (in the old days we would call that "work ethic"). The guy does NOT give up. Because of that, he single-handedly will put out a new graphic novel a year. While creating a webcomic. While pitching new TV show development ideas in Hollywood. While running a half marathon. While working freelance jobs.Live the dream, don't talk about it!3 years ago in Personal More Like This

I don't understandI saw the article about art theft, and I think that article is pretty informative! But, that article also caused SO MANY artists to leave this site, and it makes me sad. :<I don't understand3 months ago in Personal More Like This
Yes, I understand that DeviantART admin is not exactly the best one when it come to that same topic about copyright infringement. It has been like this for a long time. I had my art stolen before. I had my icon used without permission. I had experienced these, and my report got through just fine. I filled out as much details as I can, and DeviantART gave me the proper action- take their art away.
I don't understand it. DeviantART's system haven't changed since after that art theft article came out. Why are people feeling more threatened now? Am I missing out something? Did I miss a part of the article that pissed everyone off?
All of this seems like a simply domino effect from one artist's quick reaction to leave has caused the other artist to do the same because of that artist, and then more artists are doing th
Zootopia Teaser TrailerSo, recently we saw our first fully animated glimpse of Disney Animation's Studio's next feature film, Zootopia, the story of a criminal fox and a bunny cop teaming up as an unlikely pair, and, well, all people are talking about online is furries... yeeeeeeah.....Zootopia Teaser Trailer4 months ago in Personal More Like This
It looks good from what I can see - great animation, fun character designs, good comedy, generally clever concepts. It is being developed by the all-star team behind masterpieces like Wreck-it Ralph, Big Hero 6, and Frozen, so I expect good things. Ever since Princess and the Frog, I've felt Disney has been back to their A game. There are, however a few minor concerns/bitches I have with it. For one, I fear it will naturally be far less successful than previous Disney films due to its release date. March 2016. Smack in the middle of "who gives a damn" season. This may help it immensely, as it will have no real competition, but it may also fail due to limited movie-goers during the season. Since Tangled, almost every Disney fi
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U ReviewAfter two long years of waiting and posting constant status reports about its progress here on DA, I finally got the latest Smash Bros. title Friday morning and... I don't like it. Now, before you all blast me with "how dare you"s, keep in mind this is my opinion. I'm not saying it's factually a bad game, I just think it is, as well as a major let down. For starters, the game seems very carelessly thrown together. All we've been hearing from Sakurai, his team, and his fans, is how hard they've been working on this game and how tough it has been on them, but what they didn't specify is that most of that energy and work was only being spent on advertising/hyping the game. Sure a lot of work went into those (sort of pointless) character reveal trailers, but this game is made almost completely of recycled parts. A good 75% of the stages and music are ripped directly from Brawl, Melee, Smash 64 or their original source material. Seriously, almost every stage from Brawl is back, and the sounSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U Review11 months ago in Personal More Like This
My Opinion on The Adventures of Sonic the HedgehogI don't know why people bash the The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, but I'm going to tell you now... I like it. It's the closes thing to the source material of Sonic 1-3 and Milton Knight did a fantastic job with the designs(especially Dr. Robotnik). What kept it away from being a "creator driven cartoon" was DIC being the producers for it and they didn't to a good job. If Sonic was picked up by Hanna-Barbera(if directed by Genndy Tartakovsky or Milton) or Nick, It would gave been a "masterpiece".My Opinion on The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I don't like SATAM, I don't like it at all. They tried to do a dark approach for Sonic which will never work. The designs were flat and the animation was choppy. Also, the characters weren't that memorable, why the hell they didn't appear in any of the games, oh yay I forgot, its non-canon. I though those characters were pointless anyway and I did not like Robotnik in it. Not because he looks "dark or evil", hes just too dark and doesn't fit his character too well. The dark atmosphere
What if the artists took over Disney? Now it can me told- but should it? After Lion King wrapped and before we started on Pocahontas (1994), we artists of Walt Disney Animation Florida had far too much free time on our hands (for months). At the same time, our studio head, Max Howard, was leaving to move to the California Disney studio. This video, made by the artists, was a "what if the artists took over Disney management" storyline. Its full of us animators, but the Disney Florida management all played along. I still don't know how we got away with it- but no one was EVER going to see it right? I'm in there around 13:00 in. Its long, but if you like Disney animation behind the scenes films, this is the ulitmate! Enjoy! What if the artists took over Disney?2 months ago in Personal More Like This
People Who Try to Discourage Your DreamsHow do you deal with people who try to discourage your dreams as an artist? We've all had this experience, including me. My suggestion to you is that you look for encouragement from the people who don't have an agenda. 7 TIPS FOR THE 21-YEAR-OLD ME by Bobby Chiu
When I was a student in college working on my skills as a character designer, I’d had periods where I would sit at my desk working as hard as I could but having little to show for my efforts at the end of the day. I remember sitting there surrounded by blank pieces of paper, trying to come up with an amazing style that nobody had ever seen before. I would do one drawing and not be satisfied, so I would lay a new piece of paper over it, re-draw it with slight changes to features here and there. This would still not be good enough so I would put another piece of paper over my revision, make more minor adjustments trying to perfect this new style I was searching for.
I did this for weeks on end, tweaking and polishing over and over, working hard every day. But in the end, did I come up with a brand new style, something amazing that
Hyrule Warriors DLCSo true form Midna is the new character we get in the next DLC pack?... I'm going to be honest, that's disappointing. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mind having her in the game, but as an alternate weapon skin for Midna, not as a "different character". Anybody who follows my rants knows I hate having different forms of the same character taking up roster spots on a game. I understand they will play and look completely different, but it's the same character, why would there be two of her? If Link can ride a horse or go in a bottle and be replaced by a playable giant fairy by switching weapons, then how hard would it have been to make Midna's true form an alternate weapon? She uses a different weapon for it already anyway. Having two Midnas on the character select screen is just lame. And, once again, don't get me wrong, I like Midna, she's cool character, but I feel she is insanely overrated. Everybody treats her like she's hands down the best Zelda character, and I feel she's far froHyrule Warriors DLC11 months ago in Personal More Like This
