The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.2 I've been thinking about how and why we learn to draw for a few years now. I started self-analazing my own drawing and character design thought process when I began writing my first art instruction book, "Creating Characters with Personality". It was harder than I thought to verbalize how I've learned and how I process drawing. This has led me to start looking back at my artistic life and how I learned art. What made me learn the most? What drove me to draw and stick with it? What led to others I knew as a child to stop drawing? I think I'm ready to present some of those thoughts here on DA and hear what you think. This is part 2 of three in a series. I'm not sure where this is leading, but step one is my establishing an online art instruction school called Taught ByA PRO (http://taughtbyapro.com) that will (in phase one) concentrate on drawing instruction for all forms of media. Here we go:The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.21 year ago in Personal More Like This

My Progression as an Animator at DisneyA friend of mine is writing a book on animation fundamentals and asked me for a "paragraph or two" (which I can't do) on the subject of timing. I considered it and ended up writing about my progression of learning while a Disney animator in the traditional animation days. It was good therapy for me to really think this through and consider the order of things. I hope you enjoy it. "Like" or "fav" this so others will see it too. My Progression As A Disney Animator
by Tom Bancroft
Walt Disney is quoted as saying that it takes 10 years to make a great animator.
When I was first coming out of California Institute of the Arts and joining a Disney internship in 1988, hearing that quote was devastating. 10 years? That's FOREVER! I wanted to be a full-fledged Disney animator in TWO years! I rationalized that that was a way of thinking from the 40s and today, we move at a quicker pace, so-

I've seen comic how-to-get-started guides before, and they're all so ninny-nippled they word it like anyone can make a comic, wow, so magical and fun!
Wrong. Everyone and their pet dog has a "story" they want to "write" or "make a comic of." Face it, it ain't gonna happen for 99% of us. You gotta have self-discipline and stubbornness to get anything done. And you can't just avoid the stuff that sounds too hard. It's a package deal.
1. Having a character doesn't mean you've done anything. Maybe you've spent a year deciding on the perfect hairstyle and three years before that developing his complex personality, and technically, you spent the entirety of your high school career on him too, since he's a "redesign" of an old fancharacter--who cares! Making characters doesn't take years. In fact, you're hurting your story by keeping characters around for that lon

Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

He was the leader of the “fauve” (wild beast) artists, whose style of painting made a brief but indelible impact on the art world in 1904—08 with only three exhibitions.
The “fauves” sought to elicit emotions from their art by employing bright, often dissonant colors in depicting their subjects, even where no such natural color was to be found. Emotion was desired more than descriptive accura

Creating manga is quite daunting as a project. You have to worry about so many things and prepare for unforeseen problems. While I don’t claim to be an expert on the field, I can at least share with you my experiences while on a quest to create my own manga.
Bear in mind, this guide is geared towards individuals serious about entering the field or wanting to create a well-developed story. That doesn’t mean you can’t use this advice if you’re a hobbyist (more power to you!) but this focuses on taking it that extra step.
The Story Concept
The first thing you need should be obvious: the concept, or idea, for your story. This could be something you’ve had in your mind for a while, a sud

Joan Miró Against Painting
Joan Miro Homage
April 20 marks the birthday of Joan Miró, one of the most important modernist painters of all time.
Miró was born in Barcelona, and strongly identified with his Catalan and Spanish roots throughout his career. He traveled to and from Spain frequently throughout the course of his life, even though he was briefly exiled during Franco’s rule.
One of the defining features of Miró's career was his refusal to associate full

Bosch: Lampoonist or Serious Visionary?
Creator of some of the most bizarre and frightening artwork in the history of art, scholars have long debated who exactly Hieronymus Bosch was and what was the meaning and purpose of his “over the top” grotesqueries (c. 1450—1500). His most famous work is the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights. Panel One depicts Adam & Eve in Paradise. Panel Two depicts the earthly delights: nude bodies, exotic birds, bowls of fruit. Panel Three depicts Hell’s punishments for partaking of the delights. Centuries later, scholars debated whether he was a radical religious heretic or a satir

Now... I know the internet is a place where some of us feel like we can say or do what we want but...
If this video taught me anything, it's that behind every screen or Deviant Icon is a real person and whatever cold or rude comment we type can have just as big effect on them as it would in real life...
A rude comment can hurt their feelings
and a nice comment of praise or helpful advice can lift our spirits.
I'm so sorry if I sound all preachy but I care about everyone I watch and everyone I talk to here.
