The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.1 I've been thinking about how and why we learn to draw for a few years now. I started self-analazing my own drawing and character design thought process when I began writing my first art instruction book, "Creating Characters with Personality". It was harder than I thought to verbalize how I've learned and how I process drawing. This has led me to start looking back at my artistic life and how I learned art. What made me learn the most? What drove me to draw and stick with it? What led to others I knew as a child to stop drawing? I think I'm ready to present some of those thoughts here on DA and hear what you think. So, this is part 1 of three in a series. I'm not sure where this is leading, but step one is my establishing an online art instruction school called Taught ByA PRO (www.taughbyapro.com) that will (in phase one) concentrate on drawing instruction for all forms of media. Here we go:The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.18 months ago in Personal More Like This

My Progression as an Animator at DisneyA friend of mine is writing a book on animation fundamentals and asked me for a "paragraph or two" (which I can't do) on the subject of timing. I considered it and ended up writing about my progression of learning while a Disney animator in the traditional animation days. It was good therapy for me to really think this through and consider the order of things. I hope you enjoy it. "Like" or "fav" this so others will see it too. My Progression As A Disney Animator
by Tom Bancroft
Walt Disney is quoted as saying that it takes 10 years to make a great animator.
When I was first coming out of California Institute of the Arts and joining a Disney internship in 1988, hearing that quote was devastating. 10 years? That's FOREVER! I wanted to be a full-fledged Disney animator in TWO years! I rationalized that that was a way of thinking from the 40s and today, we move at a quicker pace, so-

I've seen comic how-to-get-started guides before, and they're all so ninny-nippled they word it like anyone can make a comic, wow, so magical and fun!
Wrong. Everyone and their pet dog has a "story" they want to "write" or "make a comic of." Face it, it ain't gonna happen for 99% of us. You gotta have self-discipline and stubbornness to get anything done. And you can't just avoid the stuff that sounds too hard. It's a package deal.
1. Having a character doesn't mean you've done anything. Maybe you've spent a year deciding on the perfect hairstyle and three years before that developing his complex personality, and technically, you spent the entirety of your high school career on him too, since he's a "redesign" of an old fancharacter--who cares! Making characters doesn't take years. In fact, you're hurting your story by keeping characters around for that lon

Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

As some of you may be aware, Ken Penders recently announced that he was going to be producing merchandise tied to his "Lara-Su Chronicles" series after the lawsuit between himself and Archie comics was thrown out of court and the two parties seem to have come to an "understanding", allowing Penders to use the characters he created for the Archie Sonic comic.
A few weeks ago, Ken revealed the first product he is offering, the Royal Secret Service embroidered patch:
Reception to this patch has been mixed with a lot of people. Some finding it insulting due to the lawsuit and the fact characters have had to be removed from the comic, and yet Penders makes a clear reference to the Acorn family in the patch, the two original characters (Sally and Max) characters he didn't create at all. Ken has said that the Acorn Ops is meant to be a branch of the Secret Service but we all know what it is.

After much waiting around for something worthwhile to be done by the constantly complaining fans of Archie Sonic, I decided I'd pull off the best actual course of action myself, and take it directly to Ken Pender's forums. Seeing as he's the cause of it all, he's the first step in getting this "mess" sorted out. So I went ahead and posted a wall of text post describing the situation and asking the questions that need be asked. I will know if the response isn't satisfactory, and I worded everything in such a way that it makes a severe impact. You guys want these characters back? I'M YOUR BEST CHANCE AT IT. So here is the post in it's entirety:
"Since I cannot post a new topic, I'll have to reply to one that currently exists. I don't know what else I can do to prove that I'm not a bot or some lurker try

The Legacy of Ken PendersAfter reading a few message boards and speaking on this topic with a few other people, it seems I should post something on this man here. No I won't rant. "Hello Mr. Ken Penders. Legally, you do have the right to be compensated for your work and writing from Archie Comics. You've gotten what you wanted from Archie for not giving you what you were due. That, is your legal right to do so, as each man is entitled compensation for work.
And yet, that is where it should have ceased.
You're suing Sega and Bioware for usage of quote unquote "your ideas." And yet...if not for the existence of Knuckles The Echidna, your Julie-Su character, the presumed “daughter of Knuckles the Echidna” wouldn't have come to pass. That's what the Lara-Su chronicles is about after all.

Whether you agree or disagree with me, this fucking needed to be said.
ARCHIE IS NOT AS "FREE" TO USE PENDERS' CHARACTERS AS HE MAKES IT SOUND. DO NOT LET YOURSELVES GET FOOLED.
He's already had past incidences when he still worked at Archie that proves he's a liar. During the Return to Angel Island arc he informed Karl Bollers that he had complete creative freedom over the Knuckles cast so long as he didn't kill off Locke. He then went back on his word telling Bollers what he could and couldn't do and what characters he had permission to use. This is why Stryker suddenly wound up with a son out of nowhere. Penders had decided

As we all know, the Archie Comics got rebooted at the end of 2012... and after the MegaMan-Crossover, everything went back to where everything began, in SEGA's way. This injustice has caused some rage in the Archie-Sonic-Fan-Community, since the former writer of the Comics, Ken Penders (The worst Sonic-Writer of all time by the way), sued SEGA and Archie for "stealing" his ideas, which really got SEGA on their nerves, and so they began to threaten Archie with taking away the Copyrights of ALL SONIC-CHARACTERS from Archie, if they don't stop corrupting with Penders... and the sad result is, a rebooted Comic, which actually lost it's true potential of being the coolest Sonic-Comic of all time.
Ian Flynn wasn't pleased to get the order, to throw every single alternate Story-Idea into the toilet, and so... nice and caring as he actually is, he had a Plan B. This was to please the Fans, like he said. He decided to upload the "Lost Hedgehog-Tales"

Random Rant Wednesdays: Sonic Reboot?Hello, everyone, and welcome back to a Random Rant Wednesday, the journal entry that still isn't updated on an actual Wednesday. Today's topic is not who should have been fairy type, like I originally intended, but not right now. Instead, I'm going to talk about something that's been going on in my head for a bit. As you should know, the Archie Sonic comics have received a soft reboot. Some things happened, some things didn't. It was all the result of Ken Penders being an ass. AS a result, we now have a brand new continuity with some similarities to the old story. Is it good? Is it not good? I can't tell you until I have the entire Countdown to Chaos arc, because thanks to money and X and Y, I only have two parts of it as of this Journal. So... yeah.Random Rant Wednesdays: Sonic Reboot?8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Then what's this Journal entry about? Well, it's just a small collection of what I think would be good for a Sonic Reboot. A starting point would be what kind of story would be the best. Now then, if you've read my personal favorite Sonic
'There's Some Good Worth Fighting For''It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.''There's Some Good Worth Fighting For'8 months ago in Personal More Like This

Ive been perusing anything and everything looking for my lost inspiration. At the moment for me real life is a massive hassle of kitten-sitting, job searching, isolation, disappointment, and general blah. Sega LetterHi everyone. I finally finished writing the letter I plan to send to the CEO of Sega concerning the mandates controlling Sonic the Hedgehog. I couldn't find an "official list" of mandates, so I just took the ones that most people were talking about and wrote about them. I'll post it here so you can read it. You might want to grab a drink and a sandwich, though. It's a bit long. I don't know when I'll be able to send it, how long it will take to get there or how long it'll take to receive a reply (if I even get one). At any rate, this is my one last great push to save Sonic. I hope it's effective. By the way, does anyone know how many stamps it takes to send something to another country?Sega Letter2 months ago in Personal More Like This

When George Lucas dreamed up Star Wars, when Tolkien devised Lord of the Rings, when Roddenberry conjured Star Trek, and numerous other visionaries lay pen to paper or started the reel on a camera their initial thought was not 'I can probably make a lot of money off of this idea by selling merchandise.'
To clarify Lucas thought his strange throwback experiment movie would make so little money he bet Steven Spielberg a portion of the merchandising rights to his impending flop in favor of an investment in the clearly about to be more successful film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As for Tolkien he barely intended to publish his private writings made principally to test out a language he had invented, and Roddenberry thought after his original Trek show was canceled following lackluster initial impact that that was the end of that.
To each of these people the world was crafted before the franchise because the fran
