Getting Down with the Lingo
This is the common term for Daily Deviations. The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on deviantART. A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large. This information can be readily found here -> :faq61:

Are DDs about the art or artist? Are DDs about the art or artist?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
DDs are about the art, not the artist.
Go to the suggestion guidelines of most CVs and you'll notice huge differences between stuff like the amount of favs something can have, personal preferences, and of course galleries. But there's one thing that doesn't change: the guidelines for DDs focus on the artistic qualities of the individual piece.
A DD is a 24-hour feature given to a piece of art that the featuring person (usually a Community Volunteer)—and suggester—wants to expose more.
Because the art hasn't been appreciated as much as it could be. Or because it's got something to offer the community, like a tutorial or a suggestion. Usually it's a mix of both, although of course each piece is unique.
The take-away from this is that while a lot of thought goes into picking a

Most of us have heard the terms Mary Sue and Gary Stu before heck, they may have been aimed at us before but how many of us actually know the definition of a Mary Sue? We simply believe that a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is a badly-developed character, but are we aware of what defines a Mary Sue? From my personal experience, a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is a character who:
Has barely any [exploitable] flaws.
Is virtually perfect. (These two are pretty obvious)

I didn’t comish it but i did suggest it because i was a lil upset at them at that moment, but even with my url best friends we get upset bicker and shit talk behind each others backs all the time. but its juts venting we get over it and move on cause were friends. My opinion is that the seer crew may have been overreacting in this situation somewhat. Yes i said some rude things to one or two friends in private because i was upset, dick move, but this is not really unusual behavior for anyone, we all do this. PE Prose Basics: Pacing ( and Show vs. Tell)Hello, everyone! As you all know, this week over at projecteducate is Prose Basics. We're here to help all you prose writers (whether flash fiction, short stories, or novels) get better at your craft with some basic tips for growth. Today, I'm going to be talking about something you've probably heard about again and again: pacing.PE Prose Basics: Pacing ( and Show vs. Tell)1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
What is Pacing?
No, it's not what you do when you're stuck on a scene and need to get up and stretch those leg muscles to get your writing juices flowing. It's actually a very important ability that writers have to control the speed their story is read. You as the author get to manipulate the reader in a way and make the speed of the story match the scene. What better way to drop the reader right into the moment? But, pacing also holds the ability to make or break your story and keep or lose your reader's interest. This is why it's so important in writing.
Setting the Scene:
The WHUTler - I Like Analysis but this is RidicI love a good analysis as much as the next person. Even the ones that are meant to be satirical, comedic, or generally sarcastic. But I think there are times when people just get so into something (or a character) that they feel the need to over-analyze their every action or just look into it to the point where they either end up seeing something that isn't there, or take something and make it out to be deeper than it actually is.The WHUTler - I Like Analysis but this is Ridic3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I see a lot of GIF sets for shows like Sherlock, Avengers/Thor, and Doctor Who that do a lot of, "let's take a GIF set or images from this scene and write a complex analysis for this character or that character or this scene."
And then, most recently, we have the Once-ler fandom.
I'll admit that I didn't watch the entire Lorax film, but I've seen enough clips/scenes from the movie as well as GIF sets and summaries/reviews to know pretty much how all of it goes down. The overall general consensus seems to be that the movie was fairly shitty, although th

Hallmarks of Lazy Writing
ShadowedAcolyte here for projecteducate's Prose Basics Week. I decided to tackle "lazy writing" as a topic, because they always say "write what you know" and boy, do I know laziness. Then I realized there were dozens of ways to be a lazy writer, so I heroically narrowed the scope of my article down to one broad topic: readymades. After talking about what a "readymade" is, I'll explain why they should be avoided in writing prose*, and I'll finish with some tips to help you avoid using them yourself.
Before we go any further, I should note that the term is not a technical one. It is the word I was taught to use to identify a set of common problems with weak writing, so it's the word I use. I hope you'll find this article helpful, but it's not a textbook.
*I say "prose" because it's Prose Basics Week, but readymades infect poetry as well. If you're more a poet than a prose

Art help and podcastUnironic question about cartooning vs realismArt help and podcast3 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days ago I asked for help with a drawing and i got a load of great advice. However, while taking the advice a lot of it helped reinforce a notion that frustrates me. The idea that "greater detail and anatomy = better products." Whenever I get criticism for my artwork, the general notion that I get is that people want me to make art more realistically, with greater sense of detail, lighting, perspective, and anatomy. And while I agree I need to work on all those aspects... I have qualms about being pushed in that direction. I like making cartoony drawings, so at what point do you cut off the realism in favor of being more cartoony? Why is being cartoony more frowned upon or seen as being lazy? One person in the threat that was helping me mentioned that while I did good on the artwork in question, I need to take the info with a grain of salt and be careful not to let people steer me towards being a realistic artist if cartooning

You know the type: the writer who submits something new everyday, who floods your inbox with new poems and prose pieces that they somehow had time to write since the last time you logged in to dA. How do they do it? Are there more than 24 hours in their day? Do they have chunks of spare time that you don't? Super discipline? Magic powers?
It may seem like a strange and mystical phenomenon, but believe it or not, that person is probably just as busy as you are. Even more unbelievable: you can become that person, too. It doesn't take magic powers or a high tolerance to lack of sleep or loads of spare time, but it does take discipline. Ready? Okay.
Actually, not quite ready yet. You know when you're really on a roll, when you're writing and writing and suddenly... you stop to check Facebook? Yeah. Whether it be Facebook or email or the refrigerator or deviantART, we want to get rid of distractions. Move to a distraction-free ar

1/3 cup unsweetened soy milk
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup unscented liquid bubble bath
Heat (but do not boil) the soy milk and cocoa powder and stir until blended. Let cool.
Add the bubble bath and stir.
Pour the entire batch into the tub. Enjoy!
Anti-Zit Face Mask
1 Tbsp. cruelty-free baking soda
1-2 Tbsp. filtered water
Mix the baking soda and water together until you've got a paste.
Apply to your face and leave on for about 20 minutes.
Rinse and follow with your favorite toner and moisturizer.
1 aspirin tablet (contains salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores)
Crush the aspirin with the back of a spoon and add just enough water to form a paste. Apply to the blemishes and let sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing.
Another spot treatment trick is to take a dab of cruelty-free toothpaste (the white paste kind, not the gel), and apply it to blemishes. Leave on overnight. This will dry out zits quickly.

If there's one thing that puts me on the verge of both laughing hysterically and facepalming to the point of painfully digging my my own nails into my eyes, it's whenever I see a comment (usually on youtube videos from over a decade ago) from some kid going something along the lines of:
"omg i miss the 90s sooooo bad just listening to this brings back all the memories and whatever happened to the good old days, now everything is trashy and superficial and u see lady gaga and kesha and katy perry and shitty rap and everything errewhere and it's also about brands and i just wish i could go back 2 the good old days when times were much simpler and everything was better and things had meaning and depth ahddghffff"
And then the person in question turns out to be around 13-14 years old and were barely out of diapers before that decade had even ended.
First, I will start by saying that I can be a major 90s
A guide to DeviantArt popularityAlright. I've actually planned on this article for weeks now. A little too long maybe. But now I feel I can't let it sit in a folder on my computer unfinished and take up space. It has to come out, especially after having read an article about something similar, but written in such an arrogant manner.A guide to DeviantArt popularity7 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So many people come to this community. Some just to browse, and most come here to have a place to display their artwork and get feedback. Many want to be "popular". But honestly, what does that mean? Lots of attention, favorites, watchers, and what everyone seems to want and think their art deserves, a Daily Deviation feature? Some go as far as to attack and belittle other artists for having more pageviews than them, or getting more comments. Is that what the word "popularity" means? I think that word is misunderstood and misused.
Here are a few simple suggestions/steps that will help you become a better fellow deviant, get more attention and increase your popularity:

Quotations because, haha, I have no idea if these terms have any meaning anymore.
In case you are not aware- prior to posting this journal, my last posted News article was on my page and I am not much of a fan of that. All the other changes occurring I can tolerate.
The fact that the line between journals and news and deviations is now, mostly, non-existent I find it troubling; disappointing.
TL;DR- I'd be REEAALLLL happy if i were to at least have just the one tiny OPTION to not have my news pop up on my front page.
