Getting Down with the Lingo
This is the common term for Daily Deviations. The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on deviantART. A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large. This information can be readily found here -> :faq61:

Photoshop is a great program, but despite it's many features it's a bit pricy at $999. I created this list for people with smaller wallets and certain art needs.
The programs are listed according to what type of art they are best suited for.
Don't know what program will be best for you? Most of the paid programs have trial versions available, download them and see what you like best.

Price: 79 USD
Pros: ability to customize brushes, ruler tools, user-friendly interface, some built-in screen tones. Can create "event" files, where others can watch you drawing long after the fact. Updated regularly.
Cons: Not as many drawing/painting tools as other programs, is somewhat limited out of the box.
Are DDs about the art or artist? Are DDs about the art or artist?1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
DDs are about the art, not the artist.
Go to the suggestion guidelines of most CVs and you'll notice huge differences between stuff like the amount of favs something can have, personal preferences, and of course galleries. But there's one thing that doesn't change: the guidelines for DDs focus on the artistic qualities of the individual piece.
A DD is a 24-hour feature given to a piece of art that the featuring person (usually a Community Volunteer)—and suggester—wants to expose more.
Because the art hasn't been appreciated as much as it could be. Or because it's got something to offer the community, like a tutorial or a suggestion. Usually it's a mix of both, although of course each piece is unique.
The take-away from this is that while a lot of thought goes into picking a
A guide to DeviantArt popularityAlright. I've actually planned on this article for weeks now. A little too long maybe. But now I feel I can't let it sit in a folder on my computer unfinished and take up space. It has to come out, especially after having read an article about something similar, but written in such an arrogant manner.A guide to DeviantArt popularity5 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So many people come to this community. Some just to browse, and most come here to have a place to display their artwork and get feedback. Many want to be "popular". But honestly, what does that mean? Lots of attention, favorites, watchers, and what everyone seems to want and think their art deserves, a Daily Deviation feature? Some go as far as to attack and belittle other artists for having more pageviews than them, or getting more comments. Is that what the word "popularity" means? I think that word is misunderstood and misused.
Here are a few simple suggestions/steps that will help you become a better fellow deviant, get more attention and increase your popularity:

Most of us have heard the terms Mary Sue and Gary Stu before heck, they may have been aimed at us before but how many of us actually know the definition of a Mary Sue? We simply believe that a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is a badly-developed character, but are we aware of what defines a Mary Sue? From my personal experience, a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is a character who:

Is virtually perfect. (These two are pretty obvious)

Art help and podcastUnironic question about cartooning vs realismArt help and podcast2 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days ago I asked for help with a drawing and i got a load of great advice. However, while taking the advice a lot of it helped reinforce a notion that frustrates me. The idea that "greater detail and anatomy = better products." Whenever I get criticism for my artwork, the general notion that I get is that people want me to make art more realistically, with greater sense of detail, lighting, perspective, and anatomy. And while I agree I need to work on all those aspects... I have qualms about being pushed in that direction. I like making cartoony drawings, so at what point do you cut off the realism in favor of being more cartoony? Why is being cartoony more frowned upon or seen as being lazy? One person in the threat that was helping me mentioned that while I did good on the artwork in question, I need to take the info with a grain of salt and be careful not to let people steer me towards being a realistic artist if cartooning
The WHUTler - I Like Analysis but this is RidicI love a good analysis as much as the next person. Even the ones that are meant to be satirical, comedic, or generally sarcastic. But I think there are times when people just get so into something (or a character) that they feel the need to over-analyze their every action or just look into it to the point where they either end up seeing something that isn't there, or take something and make it out to be deeper than it actually is.The WHUTler - I Like Analysis but this is Ridic2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I see a lot of GIF sets for shows like Sherlock, Avengers/Thor, and Doctor Who that do a lot of, "let's take a GIF set or images from this scene and write a complex analysis for this character or that character or this scene."
And then, most recently, we have the Once-ler fandom.
I'll admit that I didn't watch the entire Lorax film, but I've seen enough clips/scenes from the movie as well as GIF sets and summaries/reviews to know pretty much how all of it goes down. The overall general consensus seems to be that the movie was fairly shitty, although th

How to price your artwork for freelance workFor a while now I have been giving pricing suggestions to artists in the projects forum. I've had many requests and given a lot of advice. It is getting to the point where there is so much demand that I just can't keep up on the reviews, so I thought I might lessen the burden a little and help you learn how to price your own artwork. How to price your artwork for freelance work3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The problem with pricing your own work is that your opinion is not objective. You may think that your art is better or worse than it actually is. This is normal, but to get the best evaluation of your art you should ask for help outside your immediate family and friends. Remember, the project forum is intended for this very purpose. After following all the steps outlined in this article I implore you to make a thread in the project forum asking if your pricing assessment is accurate. For example "Is my art worth $XX USD?" would be an appropriate title for your thread and would hel

"I can't draw!" and Other Lame Excuses FThe excuses are used over and over and over. They're the "Dog Ate My Homework" of tracers."I can't draw!" and Other Lame Excuses F6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
At a glance, some of them might seem like valid arguments, but in the end, there is no excuse for art theft.
So, here are the top ten excuses for tracing- and the reasons that they don't work.
1. "I don't know how to draw."
Obviously not, or you probably wouldn't be tracing- but have you thought of learning? There are tons and tons of resources on the internet. Schools and colleges and other places offer drawing classes. You can find books in the library or bookstore or art shop about drawing. There's a wealth of information out there- this really isn't an excuse.
"But I can't learn to draw! It's too hard!" Yes, you can. How many thousands and thousands of artists are there in the world? So many people manage it. It is not easy, but it's not impossible.
2. "I changed parts of it, so it's mine."
Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a "change 30%" la

10 Myths About IntrovertsI've been browsing through Web today while doing a little research and I've found an interesting article from musician Carl King, which I think is worth reading.10 Myths About Introverts1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Well, being focused inwards rather than outwards is quite a common thing among people with artistic inclinations*, so I think I can find quite a few people here who'd be interested to read about what it means being one and also what are misconceptions that people have about Introverts - which I think the author got relatively well.
Also, I don't think that it's too much of a shocker if I'd admit to being an Introvert myself and rather big one at that (but it's best to view Introversion and Extroversion as a continuum - it's not that there's a fine line that separates one from another, people can be more or less Introverted or Extroverted).
Still, even among people closest to me I think there are things they're not getting about what does it mean being Introverted... heck - there are things I myself didn't realize and k

Many of you are aware of the Alice: Otherlands Kickstarter. For those who aren't, I would like to make you aware of it! American McGee has acquired film rights to the "Alice" property and is ramping up for a series of animated short films featuring our favorite tortured, blood-soaked heroine. Please visit the Alice: Otherlands Kickstarter page to check out the video, and throw money at it! If you are unable to fund then please at least pass on the message to friends and other fans.
