A NEW art school- a few thoughtsHey everyone. I've been thinking a lot about art schools and how we learn as artists. So much so, that I'm at the point where I think I want to start an "online art school". Why the quotation marks? Because I'm still not sure if "School" is the right word for this new website I want to create. Without giving out much information because this is all a bit early, I want to talk about the motivations and goals we're trying to address with this future site. I said "we" on purpose. I have a business partner in this and his background is in creating online education (not artistic) schools from the I.T. side of things. Thank goodness also, because I know nothing about that side of things.A NEW art school- a few thoughts2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I guess you could say things started when I wrote my first book, "Creating Characters with Personality". While there are many, many drawings I would love to redraw for that book, I still like that book and get great responses from it because of one thing: the viewpoint I chose on that book was to

I can draw anything... as long as I get to look at it.
There is a great myth that drawing is a memory exercise. That if you can draw entirely from memory it makes you a better artist who deserves more kudos.
Of course the study of drawing will lead to a good memory of the things you've already studied how to draw, humans, animals, whatever it is that you love to draw. But the downfall of this is that you can restrict yourself to only drawing what it is you have studied how to draw, ie what you've memorised.
Using reference is not a weakness! It is a strength and almost all top level artists use a lot of reference. Using reference means you're not trapped one person's life experiences and can draw upon a wealth of extra knowledge. How can that be a weakness?
A lot of people seem to assume that the reference should come first. They go out and they scour the dA stock etc to find th

Tools of the Trade: Choosing StockWhat to Look ForTools of the Trade: Choosing Stock9 months ago in Personal More Like This
When it comes to stock images there is no better time to be picky. With both free and purchased stock, be discerning. Once you start being picky about what stock you use, and even better when you start using premium stock, you will notice your quality of work will increase a significant amount. Better ingredients means better results.
You want a crisp clear image with a very very low amount of noise, no motion blur caused by a shaky camera, and completely no artificial effects and edits. Noise is the most common issue, but also the easiest to deal with (to an extent) as long as the image is a good size. Which brings us to our next quality to look for.
The bigger the better. The bigger it is the easier it is to add details, fix defects, and overall just a million times easier to work with. In fact, unless you are a 100% web only hobbyist low resolution images are basically unusable. There is nothing

:iconcheerplz: You guys voted, and the winner for this month's activity is a themed contest. It is a little late, so we're extending it a small bit. More info on that in a minute!
This contest's theme is WHITE DAY.
"In Japan, Valentine's Day is typically observed by girls and women presenting chocolate gifts (either store-bought or handmade), usually to boys or men, as an expression of love, courtesy, or social obligation. Handmade chocolate is usually preferred by the recipient because of the perception of sincerity, effort, and emotion put into a home-made confection.
On White Day, the reverse happens: men who received a ‘honmei-choco (本命チョコ?, chocolate of love)’ or ‘giri-choco (義理チョコ?, courtesy chocolate)’ on Valentine's D

ANYWAYS!! Here is the tip from :iconjezzy-art: So be sure to thank her!
Hey, I thought I would contribute to this segment. I feel one thing that people struggle with (if they try it) is cutting out and blending fire into their manipulations, so I thought I would tell people the best way I do that.
It's actually really simple for those who have Photoshop and requires no extracting from another image.
First thing to do is find a fire stock image with a relatively black background (that shouldn't be hard to do). Open it up in Photoshop and go to Window>Channels. In Channels, hide RGB, Green, and Blue by clicking the

List of unrestricted stock By francescamwA big thanks to :iconfrancescamw: for providing this list to the group directly from her journal. MAKE SURE TO FAV THIS!List of unrestricted stock By francescamw10 months ago in Personal More Like This
This is mostly inspired by other lists and journals around DA. It's not comprehensive-I am being a little picky about what I include. I try not to include providers who put theme restrictions on their unrestricted stocks, but some of these say "no hate or violence." I have run across a few who say "nothing immoral." But that's very subjective (I think an image of two women kissing is normal, but it's no doubt someone else's porn or immorality) and, well, restrictive.
I'll try to keep this up-to-date. I am on the lookout for more accounts to put in the "Completely Unrestricted" column. That means not one single restriction--even credit and notification, let alone commercial or thematic restrictions. So if you know of any I don't have listed, let me know.

I put together this blog for the current "Dark Photomanipulations" week at projecteducate. I thought I'd share the same feature with you as well.
FYI: There is going to be a Dark Photomanipulation Chat Event happening this Friday, March 14th, in the Chat Room at CRPhotomanipulation. Come prepared to create a dark manip with your own stock. You'll be able to give and receive advice as you create your deviation. And there's more! We're going to have some fun, so don't forget to join us, 4:00 Eastern Standard Time.
It goes without saying, without appropriate stock photos, and other resources, digital photomanipulation as we know today would not exist.
I want to share with you some favorites from a texture deviant, and model stock from five providers. Yes, I know that Dark art does not have to be black;
I like black, and no further explanation is needed.

Tips for creating dark art
I have heard many people's opinions about dark art. What defines it? What's it's main features? There is many who think they create dark art, but others who tell them THAT isn't what dark art is. But is that fair? Is it up to us to decide what dark art is OR is it something we need to feel. Something that comes to every human in need and offers a cold a dark reality of comfort. Here are the opinions of some dark artists...
"Go beyond the cliché and open your mind. People think creating something dark means you have to stick to cemeteries, goth chicks, and muted tones, which is false! Embrace colour in your dark work. Use your emotions and use your art to explore the darker side of your soul. I have found some of my darkest pieces came from me sitting outside in the sunshine and simply remembering something. Such as how the sun

How to be a respectful member in a GroupCommunity WeekHow to be a respectful member in a Group4 months ago in Personal More Like This
The majority of us are members of groups, and while we might have different reasons to join, and different things expected of our membership in said groups, it is important to be a respectful addition to a group, and to our community. Here are a few tips on how to be a respectful member of your groups, even when you become frustrated by whichever situation might come up.
In regards to submitting your art:
Of course submitting your art is one of the main purposes of joining a group. However before you jump into things and start sending out a million art submissions to various groups, you should pay close attention to each individual group's rules and guidelines! There is no room for assuming things when it comes to groups, each group has its own set of guidelines, and they might wildly differ from what you expect! So read the info they provide, or send a note to ask a question, but don't just ignore it all and spam your art in places it might not e

Let's get some creative juices flowing!
We've been pretty inactive mainly because of lack of prizes for future competitions... and we're still low on prizes but let's get something going to promote activity in the group. This mini-contest will have a really simple topic, because we want as many members to participate as possible.
This theme has probably already been used in a previous competition but it's always fun to revisit.
THE TASK IS SIMPLE: All you have to do is draw or write a scene that includes at least one canon Transformer and one canon character from another fandom. For example, you can draw Megatron and Loki from the Marvel Universe together, or write about Sideswipe and Sunstreaker pulling a prank with Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter series. Be creative!
There will be ONE winner in the ART category and ONE winner in the LITERATURE c
