Seniority Announcement - June 2012Seniority Announcement - June 20123 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
This article marks the latest announcements detailing the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 900 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice t
Happy Birthday Moonbeam13!Hello allHappy Birthday Moonbeam13!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Today marks a very special day for someone, and since this someone is our wonderful team leader, $Moonbeam13, we wanted to write a journal to say...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIE!
Now a lot of you know Danie as the big chief of the Community Relations team, but I doubt half of you truly know how much of a hard worker Danie is. Not only does she have to look after us lively lot (and by “lot” have you seen how big the CV team is?!), but she works on copious behind the scenes projects on deviantART, making this place just a little bit more devious and better for all us Artists out there in the big dA community. Not only this, but she has to have a life at the same time!
Now we have decided to use Danie’s birthday for three things:
1. To wish her a very happy birthday (of course)

Photography Troubleshooting: The Watermark FAQ"How do I protect my photography and art in general?"Photography Troubleshooting: The Watermark FAQ3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
"As Eitvys200 pointed out, at least 1 journal per month makes it to the top of the list and is about stealing art. Sometimes this is something small such as posting a piece to facebook, other times you see hoards of pieces on a website selling wallpapers or something similar. Regardless of how it happens, or where, it can hurt just as much to see your hard work disregarded and especially someone else profiting or taking credit.
Protecting work is a huge deal for some people, and not for others. It depends entirely on your outlook - how you view your work and indeed whether or not there needs to be some constrictions on it due to the content being a child, or family member. But how do we protect our work properly from art theft and wrongful use? The simple answer is you can't provide for every eventuality. Even if you upload your work to a website where right click -> copy is disabled,

First, thank you for all of your feedback concerning Gallery Makeovers! That information is being sorted and organized and I'll be working on one gallery at a time going forward. Recently, we announced the changes to the Journal Category tree and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I have been collecting feedback from the announcement for future consideration when it comes to future gallery additions. At this time, I will be monitoring the changes and should we ne

It's a tough topic and one that most of us like to shy away from rather than embrace, but the honest truth is that the shots of people that you get - the best kind - are the ones that are candid, journalistic or spontaneous. That usually means asking permission afterwards, or not asking permission at all - which can appear quite odd, to some. One of my biggest concerns and anxieties is having my camera out in public. I recently went to a beach, of all places, and was shooting the coastline when a horrible feeling crept over me and I realised that there were lots of people around and that I was invading, a little bit, on their privacy. These guidelines are useful for shooting on the street, at public gatherings and events and at more formal occasions such as weddings.
If the person is going to be the main subject of your photo - then it's kind to ask permission, get perm

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
I was fascinated this week by an article about the Photographer who survived a year only on Penguin Steaks. When I read further I was enlightened about an exhibition to the Antarctic that I had never before heard of. In 1914, Sir Shakleton along with 27 men, 69 dogs and a cat sailed from Buenos Aires to Antarctica. They wanted to be the first to cross the Antarctic Continent on foot. However their boat became trapped and they lived on the ship for 10 months. Some of the photographs captured of those moments are wonderful - timeless creations of moments when all you really have to keep yourself occupied with, is thinking and existing. To cut a long exhibition short, they spend almost two years (some of them) existing on penguins and biscuits. But the whole time they were there, Frank Hurley, a Photog
Photography Troubleshooting: How to work with MistGetting the camera out, and the scarf, hat and gloves, and heading into a misty morning or hazy evening can result in the best kind of photographs. Atmospheric, moody and ultimately a fine example of whatever current season you're in - these kinds of shots present themselves at awkward moments so it's vitally important to be prepared. In previous years I've got up at the crack of dawn and ventured out with all the excitement of a young child on their first day of school - only to come home with a grazed knee and broken felt tip pens. Or rather, washed out, blurred and altogether rubbish photographs.Photography Troubleshooting: How to work with Mist3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Fog is a popular mist - we often get confused and just term it all as fog or all as mist. It's not quite like that. It's all about the visibility, if we can see less than 1km through it then it's fog. If we can see between 1 - 2 km then it's mist. So when is the best time to catch these ground level clouds at their best? Fo

Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing FireworksWith the 5th of November looming - and of course Christmas and New Year bringing the opportune moments for fireworks - it seemed useful to put together a small troubleshooting guide for those that are going to venture out with the camera. The 5th of November in the UK is known as Bonfire night - the day when, many years ago, the plot to blow up the houses of parliament was thwarted. Nowadays when officials discover a terrorist plot, they're pat on the back and life goes on. But back in those days, a whole day was set aside for celebrating. And now, in the modern age, up to two weeks are spent setting off fireworks. So first and foremost, if you can - shoot it in RAW mode. It's great for after-tweaking and especially with white balance and sorting out flaws. We're drawing on the expertise of WhenPigsFry in order to give you as many tips as possible. He's part of a crew that puts on firework displays and thus sadly misses the chance to shoot them a lot of the time. "It's not always easy to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the sufferings around one. - Robert Capa"
The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos were announced this week and with it a debate was sparked about how best to display the controversial winners. The winning shot is Photo-journalism at it's best - and indeed humanity at its worst. The image depicts a young Afghan girl standing in the midst of the after effects of a bomb explosion. She is covered in blood, and around her lay bodies. Whilst the publication of graphic images has been a tough and much debated topic for some time - the very taking of such photos has sparked cynicism and unrest between many. Photo-journalists much of the time take their lives into their own hands when they document the horrors of this
People and Portraits Exposed #4 People, Portraits & The OlympicsPeople and Portraits Exposed #43 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Olympics 2012 officially opens today in London and with it the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of moments are going to be captured across the next two weeks. Sports Photography can belong in several categories across deviantART and it's often difficult to know precisely which one. And guess what - I've got no real answers for you! My only tip is that you need to keep in mind that sports documentation is more likely to be Photo-Journalism than anything else. Unless your sports shots are posed to be creative, emotive and so on - they don't technically belong in the people and portraits galleries. Utilize Photo-journalism as much as you can over the coming weeks, whether you're at the Olympics or you're shooting some summer sports!

"Let your words be few - and your exposures many"
Earlier this week I was stalking a photography forum (because it's where all the cool kids are) and I noticed somebody claiming to be a fairly professional photographer angling for information on the best mega-pixels D-SLR camera they could get in order to stabilise their images. Well anybody who knows even a tiny inkling about Photography will very quickly jump on that as most of us know full well that no matter how many megapixels you've got, they aren't worth a thing without a steady hand or more importantly a good sturdy tripod. I never was a firm believer in a tripod and even now, I rarely use it. However I use any number of things to stabilise myself when shooting whether that involves lying in a bed of flowers, resting against a wall or indeed using the nearest person (which I don't recommend - people sway!) However it's not difficult to get
PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs?You're browsing deviantART or are simply checking your message centre and find a wonderful art piece. You want to suggest it as a Daily Deviation because you believe it truly deserves to be seen by the community as a whole. But how to properly suggest a DD? This article will explain the process.PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Things to check before sending a suggestion:
The first thing you need to check is if the artist has been given a Daily Deviation in the past 6 months. Volunteers cannot feature anyone who's had a DD in that period of time with no exceptions, as this has been hard-coded into deviantART's system.
"But how do I check an artist's Daily Deviations?" you may ask. Simply go to their gallery, click browse and scroll down. If they have any DDs, you'll be able to find a link to them at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, you can add "/dds" after their profile url and click enter on your browser's address bar.
