Walking on Broken Glass - 3Every single one of Tony's muscles feels strained, his skin burns and every movement is painful. It's dark and he wants to get away, he doesn't know where to go but anywhere other than that place would be good enough. He feels week.
Strong men surround him, yell at him. Tony doesn't understand what they're saying and when he doesn't answer they hit him. Someone roughly grabs his hair, his heart hurts and he can't breathe because his face is underwater. When they pull him back up, there's a man. He's bald and wears glasses and Tony is happy to see him. 'Yinsen', Tony whispers and the man smiles.
There are shots being fired and Tony feels heavy. Yinsen is wounded and Tony runs to him, his steps echoing loudly in the cave, but not loud enough from him not to hear Yinsen's whisper. 'Don't waste it. Don't waste your life.', he struggles to say before vanishing into thin air and Tony wakes up with a jolt, feeling sticky from sweat. The heart monitor beeps way to fast and he glares at

"Oh my God. W-what did the doctor say?"
"That it's most likely temporary. Dr Scott didn't tell him anything though, he said it's better if I tell him, to gain his trust again."
"Yeah, but don't just blurt everything out to him."
"I know, Peter. Listen, I know you want to see Tony but-"
"It's fine, I get it."
"Thank you. There's some money on the top drawer of my nightstand, order a pizza for yourself. I'll get something around here for dinner."
After saying goodbye and hanging up, Steve headed back to Tony's room. He stood outside the door for a couple of seconds, took a deep breath and went in. Tony was looking down at the arc reactor, touching it carefully, not sure if he even could.

"Would you believe me if I did?"
"Who cares! And I almost died, too!" Tony was finally facing Steve, his finger tapping furiously at the arc reactor. "You told me this thing was keeping me alive but it almost killed me!"
"You had some problems with the first reactor you built, but then you created a new one, the one on your chest right now. You're safe."
"That's not an excuse to not tell me about it."
"Listen, I'm sorry." Steve was finally approaching the bed. "But I couldn't tell you."
"Whatever. I'm leaving this place tomorrow anyway."
"You know, that won't stop me from visiting you."
"You're kidding, right?" Tony would never admit that he was hoping Steve would say that, but the surprised tone in his voice was genuine since he really didn't believe anyone would care so much for him.
"Of course I'm not. Unless you really don't want me to go..."
Walking on Broken Glass - 1As soon as Steve entered the hospital, all eyes were on him. He had dirt and blood all over himself, his Captain America suit had large rips where his wounds were already healing, and was carrying an unconscious Tony Stark. He had managed to take him out of the Iron Man suit with JARVIS's help, but wasn't able to wake him up, don't matter how loud he yelled his name.Walking on Broken Glass - 13 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
Tony was taken to the emergency room and Steve asked one of the nurses for some change to call Peter.
"Hello?" The 18 year old answered.
"Peter, it's Steve. I'm at the hospital."
"What?! What happened?"
"I'll be there in 10 minutes."
And he was. When Peter arrived, Steve explained that Tony had been injured in battle and was unconscious before heading to the restroom with the change of clothes that Peter brought for him.
It was a couple of hours before they got any news. Doctor Scott was Tony's doctor and was well aware of his condition with the arc reactor, no other doctor was ever allowed to treat Tony
Walking on Broken Glass - 6Tony lifted the glass to his lips once again, the expensive vodka burning down his throat. It wasn't the familiar alcohol burn, no, that he could handle well. It was something else, something worse, that he couldn't define no matter how hard he tried. He filled the glass again and threw the empty bottle at the trashcan on the other side of the kitchen table. The glass broke into pieces and with a deafening sound as it hit the ground, since Tony had missed his target. After a long moment looking at the shards of glass he shrugged and got up to fetch another bottle.Walking on Broken Glass - 63 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This

Walking on Broken Glass - 4Every night Tony goes to sleep hoping to have another dream that will show him another bit of himself, but the dreams are always blurry. Steve is in a lot of those dreams and he's the one he tries to reach more often. Tony decides that the reason is that Steve is at the Hospital all the time, which is really, really annoying. Steve tells him little things that he doesn't believe, like when he said that Tony doesn't drink as much as he used to anymore, or that Pepper is married to Happy now. The daily visits make Tony feel closer to Steve, which is why Tony acts even more distant.

It's not until he's out the door that Tony remembers that he doesn't know where to go. 'Damn kid,' he thinks as he dials Pepper's number on his cell. 'Comes here to make me feel guilty and doesn't even tell me where to go to fix it.'
"What did you do this time?" Pepper sounds busy on the other end of the line, and Tony could try to feel bad about bothering her if she didn't greet him like that.
"Aren't you sweet." Tony deadpans and rolls his eyes, and he knows that somehow Pepper can hear it. "Where does Captain Khakis live?"
"Why?" She sounds more interested in the conversation now.
"Pepper, I promise I'm about to do a good thing. Will you give me his address?"
"Fine." Pepper replies after a pause and gives Tony what he wants.
The last call.Being the Captain of the team had it's perks, you might say, one of them being that whenever another member was on a 'one man mission', Steve would be the only one to get full details and would also be the first to receive any news on the mission. Steve never particularly liked Director Fury, but he never hated him. Well, not until that morning, when said Director told him about Tony's mission. It was dangerous, too dangerous and Steve argued that no one else on the Avengers team was busy at the moment, they could have assembled. Fury shook his head and explained that Stark was the man for the job. "We needed someone who could quickly understand and disable the enemy's machinery. Their technology is very advanced. We thought of getting Banner involved, but we needed someone who could leave the place fast." And that's all he said before he left

He couldn't take it. It was quiet. The Tower was full of people, full of life, but he was alone. Part of his heart was gone.
Tony Stark didn't have an easy life. He was successful in his job, had many lovers, many cars and more money than he could ever spend during his whole life. But it was just like Yinsen described him once - "so you're a man who has everything... and nothing." And it was the truth. But since than so many things had changed in his life.
Of course he went through more ordeals, but there were also happy moments in his life. Becoming friends with rest of the Avengers. Becoming friends with Steve. His first date with Steve. Their first night together. The day he had proposed to Steve. He wouldn't say that his life was perfect, but it was much better since Steve stepped into it.
But now Steve was gone.
No, it was worse.
Steve was still here, currently nine floors below him, sitting on the couch between Thor and Bruce, as the whole team gathered to watch a movie.

"I said no."
"Tony, you know that this is a right thing to do."
Tony was standing behind his desk at his workshop. He was hammering some machine, either fixing it or trying to brake it into pieces, it was hard to tell. Steve was standing in front of him in some distance, trying to reason with him.
"Steve, I pay people to do that, there is no need for me to go there," Tony said in slow voice like he was explaining something to a demented person.
"No, you will go there today."
"I will go next year."
"You can't run from this forever, Tony."
Tony put the hammer down, trying to control his breath. Steve was starting to get on his nerves. Why does he have to interfere? It's not his business. Slowly Tony picked up the hammer and punched the machine again.
"Go away, I'm busy," he snapped, not looking at the blonde.
"No, you're not. I can already tell when you are busy, and when you are just pretending to be busy so people will leave you alone," Steve said in a calm voice.

Tony finally found the problem, a fierce grin on his face. With a deft twist of his hands, he repaired the gauntlet and sighed. Putting it down, he looked up and stretched, freezing when he saw Steve sitting across from him. A cool breeze on the few inches of skin left bared by his t-shirt caused Tony to lower his arms slowly, studying the other man. Was that a slight blush he could see on Steve's face?
"Capsicle," Tony greeted idly, nodding at the blonde man. "Whatcha doing down here?"

Steve was sitting in the SHIELD's medical sector, hands resting on his knees, as he attempted to calm down his nervously bouncing legs. He had been here before.
He wasn't an often visitor in the medical sector. Of course, he got damaged during the battles, cuts, bruises, some worse stuff too. But he was healing quickly and his healing factor coupled with high-tech medical care and no matter how bad the wound was, it didn't even leave a mark on him.
With Tony it was different. He could take care on his own of some minor bruises, cuts, burns, being familiar to all of it from all years he spent in his workshop. It was worse when Tony was hurt during a battle and his wounds required medical assistance. He just hated going to the doctors. Things got better when Bruce permanently moved into the Tower and became Avengers personal doctor and was capable of treating most of the wounds. Still, it was hard to drag Tony

Growing up, Steve wasn't quite sure what to think of about his blank wrist. His mother, Sarah, had a name on her wrist his father, Joseph Rogers and Bucky had a name on his wrist when Steve met him, but there was no name on his.
"There will be a name there one day," his mother told him when he asked. "Everyone has someone out there for them; they're just not always born at the same time as you."
Steve thought about that, but it wasn't exactly true. Bucky's mom didn't have a name on her wrist and neither did the nice lady who lived three apartments down from them. The only difference between them was that Bucky's mom had gotten married to a man who never said anything about the name on his wrist and the nice lady, Miss Johnson, hadn't.

The sound of traffic was the first thing he heard. Then, the sounds of a radio. A ball game? Steve thought it was. He recognized the plays. He'd been to this game. But that wasn't possible.
Steve opened his eyes to white walls. He glanced around. The room was bare, sparsely furnished. There was a dresser and a mirror with a radio perched on top of it; aside from the dresser, the bed, and a night stand, the room was empty. There wasn't anything that lent the room any personality.
The curtains billowed in a light wind and he could hear the sounds of the street below. But something about that didn't sound right. There was the sound of traffic but he couldn't hear the people.
The entire place felt wrong.
He pushed himself up into a sitting position. Dimly, he noted that he was dressed in a t-shirt an
