Let's Learn Portraiture: Natural LightingWelcome to the second installment of Let's Learn Portraiture! The previous installment was about Model Communication. Portraiture with Natural Lighting
1.) Avoid Direct Sunlight
While it can really bring out the color of the eyes and make them pop, having your model stare into the sun should never be on the agenda. Not only is it exceedingly uncomfortable for your model, but it casts very harsh shadows. In most cases, you want to position your model with the sun behind them, or to the side. This will illuminate the hair and offer a nice glow. The issue then is that the subject's face may be too dark (underexposed). To solve this, you can bounce some light back into th

This absolutely hillarious video has been "infecting" the web for some time now (and I wanted to feature it sooner, but oh well, life and such). The first time I saw it, I was laughing so hard, because many of these things, I actually do in manips - sometimes not this quickly, but I do. And it is done daily for just about any magazine cover or vip photo shoot that you get to see! This is the true part about this video. And it's the sad part, too.
Uncover the fake Beauty
As a photomanipulator, I am often amazed at what other non-photoshop (or any other graphics programme) users will accept as real without question. Especially younger ones will be influenced by this image they see day in day out and aspire to be like it. To be as fake and "perfect" as the cover girl. How can you achieve anything like that in real life? You can't. It's that simple.
All that is left is Photoshop - the real one. You don't need a fancy plug-in to make all th

Let's Learn Portraiture: Model CommunicationIn an effort to further give back to the community, I have decided to kick off a series of informative articles called 'Let's Learn Portraiture.' The goal will be to cover topics related to people and portrait photography. Communicating With Your Model
Get to Know Your Subject
Different photographers take different approaches to how they interact with their models, but I've always taken a personal approach. Learning about your subject's interests can not only make them more comfortable, but it can also lead to more striking images that follow along with those interests. Communication is key when it comes to interacting with your model, and building a quick rapport is important in order to solidify that.
When working with amateur models who may not be familiar with posing for the camera, you may often find that they will resort to e

Executing Order 66 - Systematically killing off the cast. Fun for slasher stories, not for when you're writing a drama and have no idea how to make it dramatic without death.
When it works: Game of Thrones - We care about the characters and they die with respect to the situation and the results of that death has lasting consequences. The deaths are NOT WORTHLESS.
When it doesn't work: DC's Countdown. Watch Linkara's videos about it to understand why this fails so painfully.
Phantom Menace Challenge - Have someone describe a character without mentioning their job or their appearance. The more the person can describe the character's personality, the better written the character. Compare and contrast the cast of A New Hope and Phantom Menace for example.
Ringing Bell Syndrome - When something starts out sweet, cute, or co

Some are my own invention, some are from college professors, and some are from the glorious Ebert:Storytelling Tropes to Avoid2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Traveling Sloth - Brainless characters are dragged along a wild adventure in which they do nothing and learn nothing.
Evangellion Effect - Huge world-changing events are happening but the characters are too obsessed with their personal problems to notice
Snow White - A character who does not act but inspires others to act for him/her.
Phantom Menace Challenge: Ask yourself and others if they can describe the characters in a story without mentioning what they look like or what their jobs are. The more the character can be described, the better written it is. Invented by RedLetterMedia.
Lots-O-Plots - A story with a main theme that strings many, many vaguely related characters together. There is no central character and too many people to pay attenti

No slo-mo running at the end! I want a crane shot in reg-mo! Makes it seem more frantic and desperate!
NO SEPIA and don't freeze the frame! What is this 1985?
And why wasn't Rory noticing all those angels I mean jesus christ they were right there and why did he even go in the building like sunnovabitch there's one RIGHT OUTSIDE and he's like YUP I'LL WANDER IN HERE.
And it was awesome because it's like Rose's goodbye only we don't get a round 2 (and 3 and 4) and I like that. BAM. ABRUPT TRAGEDY. SHAPOW. THAT'S ALL FOLKS. THE PONDS HAVE LEFT THE BUILDING.
I don't know what I was really expecting this week but I liked it. I cried. Something still isn't sitting quite right with me and I don't know why . I'll work it out later. Hm.
Steven's writing hasn't felt quite right since The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. Like he's too caught up on themes like marriage and catchphrases that he kinda over

Are you interested in trying our Official Photomanipulation Tutorial Challenge but unsure of where to begin? Look no further! Here are some tips about creating a tutorial that is easy for you to write and easy for us to understand. We hope these pointers will be useful to you; as always, feel free to leave questions or comments.
1. Sit down and really think about what you are good at doing
What do people compliment you about most frequently? What are you most proud of in your manipulations so far? It could be anything, from the way you select and cut out stock to the way you make your colors pop. Start from your strength, something you can talk about with ease.
2. Take the pressure off!
No matter how "good" someone is at photomanipulation already, they still have something interesting to le

Carrying Out Order 66 - Systematically killing off your main characters and/or supporting cast en masse because it's an easier way to bring drama than actually writing conflict.
Shakespeare's Murder Makes Change: Plot going nowhere? Kill one of the characters and have the death cause a direction flow. Nearly all of Shakespeare's serious plays have someone die in order to cause anyone to do something, even if the death doesn't make sense (Ophelia's father). There is a way to make this work, but it takes a lot of tact and proper buildup.
Pulling a Tex Avery - Character pulls a conflict solving object out of nowhere that they apparently had on them the entire time.
Retconning: When a world-shattering plot point is brought up over halfway through the story that changes how the audience sees the setting and the characters, often resulting in an insultingly easily solution to the conflict. This happens whe
