Contest - A 'Fat' Female Superhero VOTINGHey guys, we're voting now, check out my front page for the latest poll.
I'm a regular reader of Escher Girls, so when I read the latest post this morning, I was deeply concerned. The following post was submitted to Eschergirls and was not made by me. The artist is Selkiesiun
I DID NOT DRAW THIS PICTURE. :iconselkiesiun: DID. THIS IS A QUOTE OF HER EXPERIENCES.
I AM ONLY RELAYING THE INFORMATION.
Selkiesiun submitted to Eschergirls:
"This is not so much a critique post as it is a conformation of how absurd the standards of art in the comic book industry have become.
I traveled to San Diego Comic Con this year and participated in the portfolio reviews they where holding from Thursday to S

Though the language they use seems to want to overly passify rather than address issues. "Your photos are your photos and we respect that." is a nice sentiment but does not necessarily exclude "we have the right to license and use your stuff even though you own the content" By signing up to instagram you are giving them permission to do this even though you do technically own the content you are submitting.
I'm not going to flail my arms about doom, but I will say, artists be aware. Not just about this, but about any contracts you sign. There is some real sketchy language in the fine print here that needs to be clarified or changed as of right now. More than just an "everything's fine, don't worry" letter. Company lawyers have a tendency to try to take the largest chunk of whatever they can, and only back off when their actions are made public and they ar

Attend life drawing classes over the summer. Blegh.
Take a sketchbook with you everywhere you go, and fill up ten of those bad boys at the coffee shop. Pfft.
Let's be honest here. We all want to become better artists, like, right frickin' now. We don't even want to have to suffer through hour-long tutorials of some pompous snooty hack bloviating over the intricate methods of drawing eyes on YouTube. We want progress, we want improvement, and we want it on our desk in ten minutes ago!
Fine, fine, I hear ya'. While these aren't going to make an instant Leonardo da Vinci out of you, these might get you up to...ehh...Basquiat caliber. Sure, I've made tutorials, but those are more about setting up Photoshop for the sake of coloring an image, and not so much building yourself artistically. Those are more technical lessons. Artistically

Update: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse Fair Exposure and miscategorizationUpdate: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
On January 24th, 2012, we released an hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results. Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system. Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results. This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.
Breaking in to Lit!IntroductionBreaking in to Lit!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Literature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.
If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of you. With writing, it is not quite the same. The effort the author puts into the work can only be appreciated if readers put in their own effort to read the work. The gratification is not instant, which is one reason the lit community is so close knit.
Those who do have large followings often also comment and read quite a lot of work h

Improving your Art
The dA news platform is a great way to adress the community and teach them things about a wide range of topics, and of course to find information that you didn't even know you were looking for! Over time I've collected many great articles. This series will bring them together per topic so it's easy to find what you're looking for! Besides helping people find information they need, the aim of this series is also to promote quality on the news platform.
For this issue, I chose articles about Improving your Art. There may be more issues on this topic in the future
Articles may overlap on some areas, and may contain outdated info though I've tried to avoid this.

Inspiration Project Take II-- JulyHere we are again.Inspiration Project Take II-- July4 years ago in Personal More Like This
And late again...
It's time for the July Inspiration Project! Are you ready to get inspired?
Remember: If you submit a deviation for the previous month, you are on the list for the next month. This means anyone who submitted a six word story in July is being used as inspiration for August. You do not have to be on the list to participate, but if you would like to be on the list for July, you must submit a deviation inspired by art from one or more of the artists on the list below.
A recap of the rules: Go to their gallery, find something that inspires you, create a Six Word Story that follows the guidelines of the group, and submit no more than one deviation to the folder down there per week.
Please submit all stories inspired by the artists listed below here.

Late Lesson LearnedWhile doing research for the new SYAC, I actually stumbled upon something truthful on TVtropes.org. Usually I take everything from that site with a grain of salt, but this one bit actually was surprisingly honest and truthful about webcomics:Late Lesson Learned3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Webcomics work on a very different set of standards than other fiction. Almost all webcomic authors are working pretty much entirely alone as they both draw and script their comics and most do not plan any further along than to the end of their current story sometimes not even that far.
Many of them try to adhere to a schedule they aren't really capable of meeting, resulting in them rushing to meet their deadline and making mistakes that should be avoidable. So many of the good 10% lack qualities standard in traditionally professional works. This can be because of the lack of editorial input as well as the lack of lead time. Not all webcomics suffer from this, though, and even the ones that do can still be interesting. Arguably, some str

In January of 2012, the community was challenged by thorns to do something about their complaints on dA. Thus was born this very group! But before the group, it was just a fledgling idea on LiliWrites's account that began with a DD Suggestion Contest. The results of that contest were overwhelming. And so, under the prodding of quite a few Community Volunteers, we're going to do it again!
UPDATE: Less than 1 week in and we've already got 100 suggested DDs and 2 accepted suggestions!! Keep up the great work guys and gals. Please remember that you need to leave a link to every deviation you suggest in this journa
About hackers on DA and what you can do"Hacker alerts" are pretty common around DA and it has been for a long time. Journals warning you that there is a hacker loose at DA and will hack your account if you don't copy the journal and re-post it.About hackers on DA and what you can do3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Some variations can be: "There is a hacker that will block all your friends, leave nasty comments on other's profiles, will deactivate your account, will get you in trouble with the staff, etc." another could be "Don't watch *insert deviant's name here* because they will give you a virus if you do" there are a lot more variations, but you get the idea. These journals always end with something like "If you read this warning, spread the word and share it with your friends so they won't be the hacker's next victim!"
I know, reading something like this can feel terrifying and you might feel compelled to spread the word, you don't want you friends to be a victim of this terrible hacker!
I know people re-post these journals with good intentions, trying to warn others about this supposed ha

Daily deviations tend to be a controversial topic within the community and whether or not a DD is worthy of the feature is, as such, often discussed.
As a CV for Icons & Handhelds I often find it interesting to read these discussions, since that way I can see what the community expects of the features, but the recent negativity on the Icons & Handhelds DDs is something I would like to address, which is why I'm thankful I'm given this opportunity during the Daily Deviation PE-week. I will try to explain why I think icons and handhelds are worthy of the feature and why they may be dismissed just a bit too quickly.
Let's begin at the beginning.
When deviantART first started, it was a site that mainly geared towards customization. Be it wallpapers or icons, if you take a look at some of the first DDs. So how come there'

This was a drawing challenge from :iconSenshiStock: and :iconmostlyguystock:!
Hands and feet are pretty hard to draw. Lots of artists struggle with them! Even when other things come naturally, hands and feet can still be quite a problem. The best way to get better at drawing hands and feet is to study them!
The Challenge: Sketch or draw 50 feet AND 50 hands from reference photos or life.
Deadline: The deadline has passed for this challenge, but you can still participate and make yourself a better artist!
You can post them as one giant post, in groups, one at a time, however you want! But please make a FOLDER in your gallery and put them all in there then send me a link to the folder. (If you do one submission with ALL of them at once, then you don't need the folder.)

Blind Winter Poetry ContestThe Blind Winter Poetry ContestBlind Winter Poetry Contest4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
With the winter comes a specific sense of appearance, be it snow, a frosty window and a fireplace, or blistering sun, the beach, and a cool drink. No matter where the location, the season brings a certain sense of familiarity...and we're challenging you to reconsider that familiar scene!
The prompt, should you choose to take it on, is to write a poem about winter as you know it. The challenge, however, is that you can't use the sense of sight within the poem. Deprived of sight, you'll have to rely on your other four senses as a means of describing winter as you know it.
Only new poetry will be accepted for this contest, so no recycling older works as entries.
All entries must be posted to the Literature gallery (not Scraps), though any subcategory in the poetry category is allowed.
Entries must be no longer than 50 lines.

At deviantART, we have spent the past 11 years building a place where artists can share and discuss their work and get inspired by the work of their contemporaries. A noble cause, for certain, but we would like to be so much more to our beloved community of brilliant creatives. Starting today, deviantART will also be a means of inspiration in an entirely new way with financial support for art.
On 3 month cycles, deviantART will accept applications from artists seeking to fund art-related projects. A panel called the Creative Grants Board will pick those projects that they believe will benefit particularly from a Grant and give those artists the support they need to make it happen. The lucky few who are chosen to receive Grants will also be given a beautiful accolade on their deviantART Profile Page to celebrate their succes

Why credit and notify?Hi all,Why credit and notify?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.
What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t
