Male Empowerment?Whenever I enter the world of feminist debate, I inevitably end up talking about men. Strange. I think a lot of people see it as a sign of the male-centric viewpoint that we are trying to overcome, but I think it is something more... something that shouldn't be ignored. Feminism is not all about women. Feminism is also about helping men.Male Empowerment?2 years ago in Philosophical More Like This
However, I want to make it clear that this is the very antithesis of the male-empowerment fad which basically states, "men have problems too, so why don't we get a rights movement?" Not only is this sort of argument incredibly self-centered, it is completely backwards. Society's idolization of the masculine is, in fact, the root of most of these problems! Consider some of the most common complaints about inequality against men.
-Men are expected to support a family.
-Men are expected to treat women with chivalry and pay for their drinks/meals/etc.
-Men are placed under much more restrictive gender-role ex

1. No godmodding, even in the slightest. Leave everything open for anything to happen, and then if you're RPing with another good RPer, they will respond reasonably. This means you never control another characters actions, and never make it impossible for a character to get out of a situation. If youve set up a precedent for something and the other RPer can also follow rules, then the RP will go well. For example, having guards come out of nowhere and surround someone to make it impossible for them to get away or fight their way out is godmodding. If however theyve say, infiltrated a castle and youve set a precedent that youve got guards there, then that would likely be okay, so long as you keep things realistic. The guards wont be there immediately, it takes time for them to arrive and respond. And please, for sanitys sake, keep the number realistic. If youre in a castle, you arent going to have 10,000 guards. I

and have a horrible case of writer's block, I figured I would write a little something up concerning Mary Sues.
The Mary Sue
Many people in fandom have heard the term Mary Sue, but few know the actual definition of a Sue. In short, a Mary Sue is a character that is unbelievably perfect. They have skills or traits that are either unexplained or impossible. The Mary Sue often dominates the entire story, and overshadows other main characters, the only exception being the love interest. Essentially, a Mary Sue is the author's idea of a perfect character, and is often a self insert. Note:This does not mean that all self inserts are Mary Sues, although instances of this are extremely rare.
Most Mary Sues have extraordinary powers that are either uncommon or unheard of in the story universe. In the DP fandom, a telltale sign of a Mary Sue is when he/she is

I am not an objectThere’s something I don’t like about the phrase “rape culture.” It’s not that I think it doesn’t exist or that I want to turn a blind eye to the problem. Rather, I feel like it is a misnomer that breeds confusion and skeptism. Rape culture is not just about rape. In fact, most of the time it is not. It is about objectifying women. Objectifying of women can lead to rape, but more often it appears in the form of little acts of disrespect and harassment that strip a woman of her feeling of humanity.I am not an object2 years ago in Philosophical More Like This
I think a lot of people don’t realize how much these sorts of dehumanizing experiences can affect a person… especially if they’ve never been the target of one. But they shouldn’t be minimized, even if they never escalate. People seem to think that sexual harassment is “no big deal” so long as it doesn’t culminate in rape. “You got catcalled? Groped at a party? Leered a

What am I doing wrong? A guide to character designHello again, lovelies. What am I doing wrong? A guide to character design3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Now, I have noticed that there seem to be a lot of design conflicts on the site regarding that someone has *le gasp!* copied your character. Oh, the humanity! How dare they?! How dare they also have a character set who are only black, white, and red because that makes them so deep and edgy. How dare their animal also have a star/heart/diamond on its forehead? How dare they make a character with rainbow legs/tails?! How dare they have a fursona with a "dark" side when they become enraged? How dare their sparkle fursona be black with lime green, hot pink, and cyan markings?! How. Fucking. Dare. They?!
So, you call them out on their obvious theft of your character, and then things get spicy. You get barraged by an army of white knights. You send your white knights after their white knights. Then, when all that is going on, you get a nice, big taste of "trolling" because you're all probably worked up and obsessi

I'm far more delicate than your mother's finest vase filled with artificial flowers and love to the brim.
I can shatter with the tiniest mistreatment.
I try to hide away in the darkest labyrinths; it's to keep myself safe.
I fear being broken once again.
I've been down that jagged path, I don't want to do it again.
But then a light finds my safe place; Awe replaces fear.
The light isn't so bad, it's soothing even.
For months we do this tango of love and grace.
I thought I could finally be safe again in the arms of a total stranger, who transformed into my lover.
Some things I didn't understand about you, but I let them go.
Your light was dangerous, it blinds from the truth.
I found that out far too late.
I'd fallen and shattered, and awaited for you to pick up the pieces.
Finally I realized that you never would.
You're empty inside; never to be satisfied.
Not even the deepest love could fill the holes in your heart.
I was a fool to fall and now I'm living with the

A Bit on HomosexualityI am here to speak of something that some people tend to shy away from. I am going to speak frankly about the fact that Homosexuality and Christianity should be able to coexist in a peaceful manner. I see anger and hate time and again. The same things are written on right wing sites opposing Homosexuality. They always say something along the lines of, "Homosexuality is a sin, and God will not allow sinners into Heaven." Alright, well, now that this has been established about a half a million times, I am going to take a chance and disprove it. My basic question to all of you is, "Why exactly can't Christians and Homosexuals get along?" The answer is that they should be able to.A Bit on Homosexuality3 years ago in Articles & Interviews More Like This
Most of the time people write long paragraphs about how those who are Homosexual are "disgusting" in God's eyes. There are even websites named things like "God Hates Gays." There is a very big issue with this. That being that if you really take the time to read and understand any part of the Bible,

He could feel his eyes grow quite moist at just the thought of announcing this. “Our, dearest, dearest Carlos… Has left us… and Night Vale.” He spoke in a heavy tone, doing everything in his power not to throw the microphone against the wall. “I am not allowed to disclose why or how, but please, let us remember that the secret police, are ALWAYS watching.” He bit his lip so hard little blots of blood bubbled at the surface. His magnificent, perfect Carlos was gone. There was nothing left for him in Night Vale, nothing worth living for. Many the Miles
Hail struck down on the still home as thunder caused the bedroom windows to violently vibrate. Elvis's voice effortlessly streamed out of the radio, but not too loudly, for fear that the rest of the household might hear. A couple of skirts were scattered around on the floor, while the rest of the room was tidy and smelled faintly of vanilla.
She gently placed her hand on the windowpane, feeling the uneven vibrations beneath her palm. She carefully searched for any handprints, for her mother would have a fit because she just cleaned. It was best to put away the skirts too, in case her mother would just barge in.
Leslie sighed at the capacious, gray cloud that oversaw Tulsa. If it had been sunny, maybe, just maybe she could have gone outside. It was a shame to waste a beloved Saturday, but it was at least better than being stuck inside school.
She pushed the curtain aside again and stared down at the neighborhood. If only she had a skyline view of the city, than she could

When sorrow noticed it started getting dark
So he leaned down to lonileness and he said
"I'm going to go home, and cry in my bed"
Loneliness shook her head, and whispered a plea
"Just a little longer, would you stay here with me?"
With that said, sorrow wouldn't leave just yet
They both sat and watched as the sun began to set
Then loneliness said, in a cheerful tone
"when you are with me I'm not so alone"
Sorrow laughed gently and said with pure glee
"when we are together you make me happy"
So happiness and friendship sat at the park
After the night became very dark
They spoke with each other up until dawn
And now loneliness and sorrow are forever gone

An easy way to test these tests is to plug canon characters into them. There are enjoyable characters that are already written who are beautiful, smart, savvy, have tons of skills, live forever, are resurrected, find true love, and are enjoyable. You wonder other people got away with such things and why you can't or you start hating most authors because they mention--just once--'beautiful' or someone easily winning a battle.
But your smart enough to get that bad feeling down your spine from some characters. They didn't just get a bad author or a crappy director, they just shouldn't be and the feeling just gets stronger the more you read and watch things and grasp deeper aspects of story-telling mediums. You know that Sues exist and that they are out to get your story. They must be stopped, but now you wonder how.
