FYI My longest post on PC ever. Sorry in advance - OP I hope there's something useful in this for you. I'm back in your thread and giving you my morning before breakfast, is my way of saying ' I care '.
Usually between 1 - 5 NEW students, per day come to me for random pieces of advice. Some from here @ PC , some from Deviant Art - Mostly from Deviant art.
It's always the same questions maybe worded slightly differently and I do my best to answer every single time, every single message. Sometimes I get behind and have to catch up at the end of the week but I do my best.
As well as those, I did 2 10+ question interviews last week, on my time, for students who were still in school. For school essays, papers, projects etc that contain the same questions they always do.
I'm exposed to 'all this' *makes a big circle shape with hands* on a fairly constant basis. Everything that encompasses 'young artists trying to find their way in this scary fucking
Its time to have to my truthful say on things.Ive been asked and heard many times about why its hard to break into the industry or how can i break in etc etc what am I doing wrong - here is my answer to all of you who ask, or all of you who are wondering. I forewarn you, some might not like to hear what I have to say, and some other people will probably think im a PRICK for writing it but for those of you that DO, Bite me, I dont care. Its time to have to my truthful say on things.5 years ago in Personal More Like This
Im editing a version i posted on polycount for this website.
Here it is for all who are willing to read.
The core to all of this for me if, youre gunning to be an artist is to shape your life around being exactly that. Reduce as much of the clutter as possible, and avoid all the things that can be used as an excuse to not be doing what you should be doing, which is making art. Not because you have to, but because you love doing it.
Heres Uncle Haz's 3 step plan to help you discover that happy place!
If you dont love making art or are finding it frustrating, somethings

Daily Deviations UpdateHappy Monday MorningDaily Deviations Update3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I started this morning by signing something "Moonbam13" so either this typo means I need more coffee, or this week is going to be BAMTASTIC!
I'm rooting for the latter
I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated
The following guideline changes are in effect:
The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.
How to display Youtube videos in Deviant Art.I have started showing off youtube videos in my gallery like this one for example :How to display Youtube videos in Deviant Art.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Some people asked how it's done, so here's the idea. You need to create a SWF file (with flash) that you then upload to DA.
So the question is: how do you embed a youtube video in a flash file ?
Well I am not really good at Flash myself but I found some information on internet and I just followed the instructions. So all I am doing is showing you the links that helped me achieve it. Here you go :
For programmers, you can refer to Google's official instructions here : https://developers.google.com/youtube/flash_api_reference
Good luck !!
LIVE character design workshop- BETAHey everyone. I'm on vacation this week, but I hope you are all having a good summer so far. I wanted to announce a new program I want to start of live internet workshops/lectures on character art/character posing. I've been thinking about this for awhile, but its very intimidating figuring out the best way to do it- SO, I'm just gonna start! I need your help though. I want to hear your comments and suggestions on what, how, when this is done. Please do two things for me: 1) Comment on my thoughts below on how this can work and what will be discussed- especially any thoughts on the tech side like Paypal and internet conferencing sites and 2) hit the LIKE button on this journal if you would seriously do this. It will give me a rough headcount of what I can expect. Super important.LIVE character design workshop- BETA3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Flash Fiction Month 2012Remember in April when cruelty came in the form of NaPoWriMo and Script Frenzy? Those poor prose writers may have felt lost what to do, and twiddled their thumbs impatiently? Well the wait is over as July brings a writing challenge for the fiction writers in the form of Flash Fiction Month!Flash Fiction Month 20123 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Flash Fiction Month (FMM)
What is FFM?
Flash Fiction Month (or FFM) is a month long challenge throughout the month of July. The objective is to write a different piece of flash fiction every single day of the month so by the end of the month you could have 31 pieces of new writing!
A “Flash Fiction” is a piece of prose which has a wordcount between 6 and 1000 words. The piece must be a complete story from start to finish and a standalone piece of work.
This is a great opportunity for those who have perhaps wanted to try a new form of writing, or enhance current skills. It is also worthwhile f

Long time no see! :iconbummiesplz:
It's been a good two months since I've done anything on deviantart - and the reason is because I've been neck-deep in trying to get "Double Rainboom" finished. We're about 75% of the way done and are aiming for an "Early 2013" release date.
We just released a two-hour Adobe Flash Puppet Tutorial on our YouTube page and have also been featured on Equestria Daily.

Getting a First Storyboarding GigThis question came in from Twitter today: "How would I go about getting a first storyboarding gig?" I thought I'd put my answer on the blog so others can read it too. Here it is:Getting a First Storyboarding Gig3 years ago in Personal More Like This
When I was starting out I had absolutely no idea how to look for work myself. It ends up being different for everybody. The big thing when I was starting out was to make sure LOTS of people saw my work. This was before the Internet got started, so I was working on my college newspaper, making comics and showing them off at conventions. It was meeting a Ren & Stimpy director at a convention that helped me get my start. He liked my comics, and he told me all about how storyboarding for TV works.
The main thing that helped me get started was that I got my work OUT THERE where people could see it. That's a million times easier to do now than ever before; no publishing costs too get your work see by countless people through blogs and Facebook and Twitter, etc.
Here's a crazy story: last year I came across a guy on
Walt Disney, John Pomeroy, and meWhat do all three of us have in common? Animation, of course. But as far as this posting goes, there are two seperate bits of info I'm giving you:Walt Disney, John Pomeroy, and me2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) I just saw this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAl9P4T12Rs&featurelayer_embedded to a much loved video of Walt Disney talking about "art style". I as a part of some Disneyland show he did for TV way back when, but it is one of THE BEST looks at the individuality of the artists at the studio back then. Its one of the few times that Disney acknowledges how many different styles reside in the animation studio and that they must all melve together to create one vision. But also contribute their "pieces of uniqueness" in the creation of the ultimate style of a film. It also includes the famous clip, "Four artists paint a tree" that is the second half of the video and plays out all that he says before. A MUST SEE FOR ANY ARTIST!
2) Just last night, I did a podcast interview with leg
My favorite ART suppliesI get asked a lot what pens and pencils I use. So I thought I'd post an updated list of my favorites. I'm a big fan of trying new things, I'm always buying lots of different pens to try out and in my search for the best tools to use for creating comics Ive found these to work the best for my needs. My favorite ART supplies3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My number one question that others ask me is "What do you ink with?"
I use Kuretake brush pens. Here's a link to a sable hair brush pen that I love, it's the closest thing to a real brush I've used. It is pricey though. http://www.jetpens.com/Kuretake-No.-40-Fountain-Hair-Brush-Pen-Sable-Hair-Refill/pd/3958
The less expensive version is the synthetic hair, http://www.jetpens.com/Kuretake-No.-13-Fountain-Hair-Brush-Pen-Red-Body/pd/2661 this brush pen is similar to a Pentel brush pen. http://www.jetpens.com/Pentel-Pocket-Brush-Pen-for-Calligraphy/pd/1793
The cool thing about these Kuretake brush pens is the refill cartridges have nice ink in them that I use, but if you find you don't like the

I don't usually do call out threads, but today I'm feeling sassy. Besides, the subject of this journal, TomPreston, blocked me a while back. I guess for being a "troll"?
I had seen his comics on the front page nearly every day and didn't think much of them, however after he wrote A Harsh Lesson I began to critique his work. Partially because I wanted to see if he'd practice what he preached (he doesn't) but mostly because he has the ear of many young artists and is sending them many bad messages. Over time critiquing him became an exercise for myself on the nature of comic making, and I got into interesting conversations with various people in the course of posting them.
I stuck to mostly his long-form comic work, and stuck mostly to critiquing writing and occasionally the art.
It came to a point where he seeme
