FFM XShe has more books than friends. Even on her Facebook account.
Eleven are duplicated, four are autographed, nine are missing covers, and six are in languages she doesn't speak.
(Her books, not the friends, but one never knows.)
She's worked the same job for three years, saying that it will get her to bigger and better places. It took her three years to figure out that she can't see any places, let alone bigger or better ones.
She writes stories about sad little people like her, except she didn't realize that she was like all of them. She was different because she liked her job. She liked her job until she realized she didn't. And then she couldn't think of anything that set her apart.
She has more books than friends, and she collects them the way one might collect loose change. (Again, the books, not the friends.) She hasn't read all of them, and she doesn't even know that she will. She gathered them all up in order to make herself manic-pixie-dream-girl.
But now, she's a depressive-pi

Innovation for WritersThere have always been a lot of writers on deviantART begging for more recognition. It's understandable that literature is given a lower priority: as I'm writing this, there are 3,280 "Writers" online, which compared to the 10,671 "Artists" is a relatively small community. So all of us writers whine about how we never get "the attention that we deserve." There are plenty of stamps declaring, "Writers are artists too!" and all that sort of thing. But we never really get anywhere.Innovation for Writers5 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Well let's get serious, people.
deviantART easily has the most impressive coding I've ever seen. And the latest updates of the message centre, notes and v7 were stunning. So much is possible; it's time to give writers the edge.
When deviantART's Portfolio feature was released, it stated:
"Some people ask if Portfolio supports Literature, Film or Flash Animations. Unfortunately these formats are not yet supported, but we are working hard to make sure to support these media in the future with presentation formats

Writing: always room for improvementI've been getting a lot of messages and comments saying things like, "omg, you're an amazing writer, ugh I give up" and "I'll never be as good as you"Writing: always room for improvement3 years ago in Personal More Like This
guys, don't ever say that. you don't understand: my first draft of Paper Stars was horse-shit. So, in order to show you guys that anybody can get better at writing, I will now show you a scene: one copy of it written by me as an 8th grader, the other of my final manuscript.
#1: circa 2009
Suddenly, the silence was broken by the drunken voices of two soldiers. We stopped, waiting quietly as two SS soldiers staggered down the street towards us, taking swigs out of their flasks. One of them stopped in front of me, his lips turned into a drunken smirk. "Well whaddo we haf here ?" He slurred, looking down at me. I felt Benjamin's hand tighten on my shoulder. "A pretty 'ittle thing for a Jew, ain't she, Viktor?"
The other raised his flask to his mouth and downed what seemed
Read stories/poems for free, then publish your ownHello, I'm Jochannon; I've been publishing online for about two years, strictly small-time, but I do have dreams.Read stories/poems for free, then publish your own4 years ago in Personal More Like This
WHAT I'M DOING
Every week I publish original stories, poetry, fan fiction, one Edgefolk story, and email them to my subscribers.
I also publish comics, manga, cartoons and visual stories of all sorts: http://jochannon.deviantart.com/journal/Publishing-Manga-Comics-Graphic-Novels-Artbooks-293264925
I will take literature from any genre.
No limit on the length of poetry or stories, but I have time constraints, so longer pieces are harder to read, so are less likely to be accepted.
Once I have published a piece of art, all rights to it revert to the creator.
Sex: it's normal, it's natural, having sex in work will not disqualify it, but I will not publish pornography or erotica.
Considering the previous paragraph, artwork touching on rape or pedophilia must handle the subject with delicacy
I reserve the right to not publish any artwork th

How to Write a Query LetterPublishing WeekHow to Write a Query Letter7 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
A query is kind of what it sounds like -- you're ASKING an agent or publisher if they're interested in seeing your book. But a query is more than hey what's up I'm awesome my book is awesome look at it plz! You have to write a professional letter that will entice the person who will read it into writing back with a HECK YES SHOW ME YOUR BOOK! (Okay, they probably won't say it like that. But you get the gist.)
The first line in your query should be:
Dear Ms./Mr. AgentLastName OR Dear Ms/Mr. EditorLastName
This might sound obvious, but you never EVER want to address a query with Dear Sirs/Madams or To Whom it May Concern. You also don't want to address it to the publisher or the agency. You are writing a specific agent or a specific editor, whom you've taken the time to research. You know what this person likes and you think he or she will like your book. So address them personally.
The next lines should should look something like:

like my past lovers
dressed from head
to toe in black,
the tarmac, pink
dry five petaled flowers
that i don't
care much for now,
an empty womb
a crypt, the darkness
jumping ship again,
his bones soft
a vein, a needle
and a weight
against my chest,
the golden sun and silver
moon, the beds
inside saint peter's
(they sound like my heart in the night)
Tips: How to get started with the lit community!Hello everyone! My name is Ricky Alaniz otherwise known as chromeantennae and today, I wanna give you guys a little guide on how I really got started here. How I got my name out there a little bit more and really got the courage to do more around these parts.Tips: How to get started with the lit community!1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
First off, understand that 99% of the literature community here on deviantART will give you just as much in return as you give back to it. It's a natural, human thing. But if you don't give back, you won't receive. That's always the number one thing to remember, but also that we're all here to support each other. Even the most popular of deviants started right where you are. Yes, even the Senior Members and lit CVs were newbies here on this site at one point too. And I know some people are intimidated by Senior Members and literature CVs but these folks are the LAST people to be intimidated by! They're in these positions for the exact opposite reasons-- they're not evil-doers or big bad monsters ready to reject whatever you sugge

i want no part in settling down, i want

wrists like blind slats so i can see
the light, keep fresh inside
with cling film stretched across,
go on then do it, listen, i will let you,
i will take your lover's song, the blame
be storyteller to them all, sit in

conceal the fact and smile
as life drags me down the aisle
to that bastard standing there

A Quick Guide to Publishing ResourcesPublishing WeekA Quick Guide to Publishing Resources7 months ago in Personal More Like This
A lot of you are probably familiar with my extensive Publishing Resources List, and if you are, you probably know that it’s gotten rather…unwieldy. This article will serve as a quick guide to the most essential resources I’ve collected, so you don’t get too overwhelmed when you’re starting out.
My Idiot’s Guide to Lit Mag Publishing and Idiot’s Guide to Book Publishing are two good overviews of the most popular types of publishing. Another great resource for those of you hoping to publish books is this chart, which covers the different p

If you put a bunch of editors in one room you will need snacks. Snacks are what gets an editor through reading and selection meetings, the more snacks the better. The lit mag I used to edit poetry for enjoyed green beans in hummus. A lot of editorial boards blind read, which means you submit your work and then an intern will remove all your information and your work becomes anonymous. The cover sheet stapled to your work will grade you on different things—you won’t get to see this though, editor admin eyes only! I like blind-reading, as it strips the editor of their bias towards a particular writer. It often became a game to see if we could recognise a well-known poet’s voice and the excitement would gain momentum until the reveal when we wrote the acceptance emails to our prospective poets.
Different editors have different tastes and it will be impossible for you to market your work to an editor’s taste. You need to feast on the body. So, read t
