I agree with this post but I've never told anyone to not to go to art school or university.
People ask me all the time what school do I go to (ALL THE TIME). I always respond "just a cheap state university", but it kinda of bugs when people want me to be specific when it really doesn't matter.
I don't like the bureaucratic system in my university. I think taking GE classes are a waste of time and should only count as electives. I hate how the university uses the horrible methods to teach us art since it never works. I hate how the Art Department does not offer a lot of classes compared to other departments.
I took over five Animation classes and none of them helped me. What helped me was studying from the "Preston Blair Animation book". I studied it on my own time when I was doing an internship in Florida (nothing to do with my career but it was fun).
I've seen students struggle because they were not taught properly how t
Credit Where Credit Is DueGetting credited for the work you do is the most simple wish that is shared by every single artist alive. Whether you draw stick figures doing something silly, or unique master works of scenes from fantastical worlds, or characters ranging from simple and cartoony to complex, detailed and realistic. You obviously want to get a little acknowledgment for your work, even if it's a simple thumbs up or anything really.Credit Where Credit Is Due2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So it is incredibly understandable to be upset or disheartened when people mistake work you do for the work of another artist. Whether be simply because they saw the character or concept done by someone else first before seeing what was originally done. Or just something similar.
It can be as simple as not checking the credits most artists give when they draw characters that belong to others, it can be a careless first glance mistake, but that doesn't really excuse the fact that when you mistake a character or concept for the wrong artist who did it, it annoys and hurts them.

i notice, and have experienced countless times, that a lot of younger users on this site tend to do something akin to self depreciation when attempting to praise others work.
thats…really not ok. like really really not ok
im going to be using direct addressing pronouns “you” without actually referring to anyone specific, but, by you saying something like “oh ill never be as good as you” or “im so jealous of your work” or “i want your style/skills” in a directly envious and self depreciating tone, you are honestly doing NO ONE any favors. its rude, childish, and hurtful to say things like that, to both sides. you think i want to hear you talk down about yourself in an attempt to make me feel good? why would that make me feel g

GODZILLA (2014) review - The Showa Must Go OnGODZILLA (2014) has hit theaters, and for months (years for most Godzilla fans), potential audiences have been anticipating a return to form for the Lizard King - a film that will revisit the themes of the 1954 original and deliver a brooding, apocalyptic story of destruction and doom.GODZILLA (2014) review - The Showa Must Go On8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, what we got could best be described as a sequel to THE TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (1975).
Trust me, I wouldn't begin a review with a hyperbolic, attention-grabbing statement like that without explaining it. For the moment, let us turn back the clock and toss out a quick recap of the film's plot. Obviously, this review will contain a metric crapload of SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS, but you'll complain anyway, so let's get on with this.
After a mysterious event in 1954 regarding the Castle Bravo nuclear test and an unknown giant organism, the story jumps to 1999, where two scientists, Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr. Graham (Sally Hawkins) are investigating a massive underground tomb in the
Loving and Hating your own work...Being creative, we all hit bouts of loving some work and either growing to dislike it, or even hate it. This isn't ALWAYS the case, but having the objectivity to start disliking our work is what helps us grow and want to be better. But here's the kicker, when you're trying to create something bigger than a single piece of art, how do you keep interested in a project?Loving and Hating your own work...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Anyone who's been following me for a while knows I'm quickly becoming the king of false starts. Julie Rush, Battlefield Babysitter, Sherlock Fox, and most recently Space Time Fabuloso are all projects I intended to run with and have a blast with, but soon after starting and even getting SOME production going on them I fall out of love with them and feel if I don't love it, no one else will and if I don't love it why would I continue to do it.
Yet I see tons of folks who have their O.C.'s or even personal comics (of any quality) and they stick with them for yeeeeeears. I can barely get a few months into a project before I b

They're very interesting because it's a topic I'm super passionate about, in terms of art career vs financial stability.
I won't rant for too long, but I hope some of you guys understand the hard work artists go through. when I see comments like "art isn't a real job" or "make cartoons faster", I get livid.
With me, derogatory insults don't matter. You can call me whatever you want, I've been called worse by people I know. But ignorance on the animation process and business really gets to me. At least understand that even a minute animation takes a super long.
Having over 100,000 subscribers does not equate success for a youtube animator. And it's much more than not using adblocks.
OTHER TOPIC I've been feeling a little better. Thanks everyone for the nice comments! I've been surrounding myself lately with wonderful friends that are super positive and inspirational. It was rough before because I didn't use to have

This was my first commercial film and I had barely worked in the industry at this point, and it was mainly in educational CD Roms and not TV, so I had little experience to speak of. I will try to repost Book One of The Seer this Christmas before school begins again.
I can't promise anything since I have a better way of posting it on dA now, hopefully keeping people from reposting it on other websites, but Dan Povenmire himself encouraged me to put it back up. He said some really encouraging words to me, and while he said he was not allowed to read it, he did enjoy the art I had posted.
So the story will go back up, PnF and all, within time. There will not be a sequel written for it, unfortunately, and I still want it to become an Imagination Jumpstart story eventually, but with Dan backing me up to a certain degree, that and I really do love the story, I will repost it for those who have enjoyed it so far.
And maybe even post a new contest. I think a few months was a good time off for a while. I've grown a thicker skin so while there are those who don'T like it, and while I am still unhappy with a lot of my writing, This was a preciou

As I mentioned, there is a contest for the 7th character...because I was too lazy to draw one..
Anyway, I will give you a description of what the character will mainly look like, and you can add on!
7th character: A smart, but perky girl with some cool glasses, perferably brown hair. A skirt of some sort, and make her look like from the 70's atleast! You are given lots of freedom with this, so go crazy!!
Villian: Guy or girl..just do whatever you think will be cool and funky! This is entirely up to you!
Sidekick pet companion (good or evil side): something outrageous, but it has to be a land mammal . Be creative! The animal has to have some sort of unusual accessory, just for kicks.
Note: you do not have to do all of these, but it will give you more of a chance to be picked.
Anyone can enter. All mediums welcome. Any sty

If you like anime, do not talk shit about furries.
"But their fandom is over-rated, and I'm sick of seeing fanart of it!"
...And they, and everyone else, are sick of seeing yours, too.
So instead of sitting around baring your fangs at each other, wouldn't it make more sense to shake hands, and say, "I know what it's like to be hated, I know that feel bro" and be comrades?
...I've felt this way ever since Kingdom Hearts first became popular on here, and the Naruto fans wouldn't shut up about all the KH art on the front page, and the KH fans wouldn't stop whining about how over-popular Naruto was.
There is nothing more hypocritical than to hate on something that is disgustingly over-popular if you are enjoying someth

How to be a Great ArtistPeople write me all the time on how to be a great artist and I figured that I would finally answer instead of delaying it constantly. So here are some tips on how to improve. How to be a Great Artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
These are legit. They helped me so they will help you as well.
1. Steal People's Work
I'm pretty sure you have a lot of favorite artists that are popular as well. Download their artwork and upload in your account. And because the majority of the internet is stupid, say that it's yours. Who's gonna know? The chances of you getting caught is very slim. But on the chances that you do get caught, deny that you stole it. Create an army and tell your minions to give that person hate spam. And don't forget to write in your journal that everything you post is from you. This will definitely increase your popularity.
2. Find a Style and Stick to It
Who cares about knowledge and construction and improvement? No one does. All you need to succeed is finding a new style and using it forever. Just make up one and n

Do not think "I will never be this good".
Instead, think "New goal: I will strive to become this good".
You will NOT become as good as you want to be in an instant. It may take you years upon years to become comfortable with your art. But you will make it; as long as you strive for goals, practice, improve, break out of your personal barriers, try new things, and most important of all: be patient, and never ever give up.
But on the other side of the coin: when you do feel comfortable with your style, you are NOT done. Do not stop improving. Strive for higher and higher goals.
SO NEVER GIVE UP.
So long as you have faith in yourself and patience, there isn't anything you can't do.
This is the mentality that fuels my art spirit. I want you all to think the same.
Free Artwork is not something I doAnd you shouldn't either.Free Artwork is not something I do1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I only direct your attention here because I receive a LOT of requests of for free artwork, whether it be logos, character design and sometimes even graphic novels all intended to be for free.
I'm a working professional making a living with my art. So clearly I won't be doing art for free, when it's my job to do it. BUT, I also support the idea that even artists who work freelance or even just as a hobby shouldn't work for free.
Please check out this video by Stephen Silver who explains this way better than I ever could

I wanted to personally say thank you to everyone that's here.
From my closest friends, to many acquaintances, to any watchers, and lurkers, and idols or inspirations, and every other person in between,
I want to say thank you to every solitary one of you for what you've done for me in my life.
I want to thank my best friends for being there to talk to in any crazy times that have come our way good or bad, as well as thank you for always being open in sharing things back with me, and being the awesome people you are
I want to thank all my watchers, new and old, and really just ANY one that's ran across my artwork before and had gotten a smile or a laugh out of what I do. In the past year or so a handful of you have actually messaged me saying I'm an inspiration to you in some way, and I'm still flabbergasted anytime that it's happened.

I don't use a stabiliser on top of the fabric as it obscures my view. It requires more work but the result is worth it for me.
First, cut out your base piece and your piece to be appliqued on top (in this case a blue stripe onto a yellow tail piece).
Using spray adhesive (or iron on, whatever floats your boat) spray the back of the top piece (blue here) and stick it into your base (yellow) where you want it to go. Use the same adhesive to attach cutaway stabiliser onto the back of he base piece where the stitching will go through (I use lots of little scrap pieces from embroidery but as long as it is covered that is fine).
Straight stitch around all the edges of the top piece. Get as close to the edge as you can
