This is the main writing project that Iíve been working on for the past several months, and my fourth major attempt at writing a short story. It can sort of be considered an expansion of the concept I introduced in this poem, but it also incorporates thematic elements from a huge number of other things Iíve submitted here. Iíll be interested to know how many elements from other things Iíve drawn or written people can identify in this story.
At its root, this story can be considered a reaction against the way dinosaurs are most often depicted in fiction. (Terra Nova, Iím looking at you.) Itís also a commentary on a lot of other aspects of human society, particularly the relationship between science and the media.
This story incorporates several fairly new pieces of paleontological data. Once of the most obvious is that position in which the dromaeosaurids are described as having slept is based on the preserved sleeping posture of Mei long, but there are also a few others. The specific way that theyíre described holding prey animals against their chests is based on this paper by Phil Senter. The discovery that had the most important influence on my story is this one, showing how some deinonychosaurs dug early mammals out of their burrows, and the time and place that the characters travel to in my story is the specific time and place from which this behavior is preserved. One recent piece of data which I did not incorporate is the discovery that in Citipati and Troodon, it was the fathers who brooded the nests rather than the mothers. As was discussed at the Hell Creek forum here, there have been such a huge number of reversals of which parent broods the nests among modern birds, this isnít a trait that can necessarily be determined by bracketing between different families.
There are two characters in this story who have a history outside of the story. Karl is based on a specific person with whom Ferahgo and I have interacted at Wikipedia, and I think Iíve made this characterís personality a pretty accurate representation of his real-life counterpart. The character of Oliver Speagle is one whom I created upwards of ten years ago, although I think this is my first completed piece of writing that involves him. It probably wonít be the last.
The initial concept for this short story came up when I was considering the claim that Tyrannosaurus rex would have used its size to bully smaller predators such as raptors away from their kills. This may have happened once in a while, but I would think that, if anything, the smaller predators would have been the ones who would eat T. Rex's leftovers. T. Rex's kills would have been bigger after all, so it could have fed more scavengers than anything raptors could kill.
As I wrote this, the story evolved into a deconstruction of the raptor fanboys' belief that a pack (or flock) of raptors would have been capable of killing anything. If larger raptors like Utahraptor or Achillobator hunted in groups, I could see those tackling large prey, but the likes of Velociraptor or Deinonychus tackling anything as big as a fully-grown T. Rex or Triceratops...please! You might as well have flocks of hawks attacking rhinos.
The way I see it, most raptor flocks would have stuck to medium-sized prey such as Tenontosaurus, leaving the really big and dangerous game to larger theropods like T. Rex and Acrocanthosaurus. It would have been rather like how wolf and hyena packs today hunt deer rather than elephants. I don't mean to this say that raptors weren't badass in their own way, but no dinosaur was an indestructible killing machine.
I'll upload a preview image later when I draw something
Plot summary is pretty simple, just a silly rewrite of Beauty and the Beast involving highly evolved dinosaurs. YEP.
De'Ban is a highly evolved tyrannosaurus rex. His race is called the K'sai. They are more mammal like than bird like thanks to years of evolution (and possibly magic and mutant tampering).
I'll do a ref sheet on his race at some point in my measley life.
Story does contain some swearing.
I wrote this story about two years ago, starting sometime in December 2005 around finals time. Finished sometime in 2006 or 2007. Can't remember. It was a side project as I often distract myself by writing for myself. I am rewriting massive sections of it and hopefully will have this entire thing uploaded over break D: Basically this is to get me back in the writing mood after spending about two years writing nothing but essays and reports.
This story was heavily influenced by my History 195 course.
About like a million people requested me to continue this fanfic, now here it is the 11th part of "Return of the Dinosaurs."
My Jim Henson's Dinosaurs fanfic idea of a movie.
The part where I last left this fanfic was when Robbie got teased by Spike and Dave when he confessed to them that he's falling for Serena, even though she's a human.
And other thing, what is up with people comparing RobbiexSerena to EdwardxBella (of Twilight)?:
*Serena isn't clingy about Robbie *Robbie's much more mucho then Edward will ever be (and he doesn't need to sparkle) *Robbie and Serena NEVER had a kid (and I don't want to turn this into another "Cournasaur" movie)
Dinosaurs characters belong to Jim Henson Serena Hawthorne belongs to me Fanfic written by me.
