How to advance the medium of colored pencils?Always interested in how to advance the medium of colored pencils in this digital world of today. Here are some categories of where I think colored pencils still hold strong in regards to that specific subject matter and have a future in it.How to advance the medium of colored pencils?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Very strong, it is something people want and something people buy constantly. Have not seen many if any digital artist doing pet portraits. So the market is strong and some people are so talented at making pet portraits with colored pencils it is insane. So in the future pet portraits will always be one of, if not the strongest point in colored pencil art in terms of selling. I believe thisl because of the ability to draw fur so well with them.
Old School Comic or pinup art-
Very nice little niche, one can accomplish and older look and a more traditional look smooth digital art cannot usually. Not sure of the market but reg

One Reason....... why I try not to comment about people's weight. One Reason...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I used to attend a particular conference on an annual basis, and so I got to (casually) know the other "regulars" who also used to be there. Every year, more or less, I'd see the same group of people at the speakers' dinner, and we could catch up on the usual "what are you up to these days?" kind of stuff. One of the guys I used to see fairly often was a tall heavy-set fellow (some might call him "fat" or "obese") he'd always been tall, bearded, and big, to me. But one year, he showed up and he had lost a lot of weight. It took me a second to recognize him, and I said, "Hey, Rich! You look great! You've lost a lot of weight!" and he looked at me and deadpanned, "Yeah, pancreatic cancer will do that."
Do I need to belabor the point? I will. First off, I set myself up for a massive head-fuck, by making assumptions about what was going on in someone else's life, and - even though I was being friendly about it - I was horribly wro
Sketchbook Pro 6So most of you know that I'm a Sketchbook Pro user.Sketchbook Pro 62 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days back, Autodesk released Sketchbook Pro 6, and I think this is the version that's going to make a lot of people who have YET to experience Sketchbook Pro in full, or haven't really given the past versions a chance, switch over to making it their digital drawing software of choice; heck, even their PAINTING software of choice.
We still have the cleverly-designed user interface, that makes it easy on the eyes and mind when we're brainstorming and sketching. With the handful of new tools introduced, we still have a clutter-free drawing environment, and man, there's some awesome tools this time around. I'll go down the list:
The Brush Library
The main brush toolbar itself has a click-and-drag function, allowing you to store all your often-used brushes in each of the "lanes". You then can click the button on the upper-right and then a fu

"Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."—Prof. Albus Dumbledore
Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian times in which map

Animation Job FAQ
Q: How can I get a job in animation?
The absolute best thing you can do to get into animation as a career is to go to art school. Not only will you learn how to draw and how to SEE, you will meet people, students and teachers alike, who will give you new perspectives and will likely be the sources of your future jobs. (My first job came from one of my teachers.)
There are several schools that have fantastic animation programs that cover all facets of the atr form. Schools like the one I attended, CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS, will teach you animation (2D and 3D,) character design, storyboarding, bac

Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.Tutorials and techniques3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.

Contours in Context
The argument for the nude in art:
Our visual perception of the human face and then the human body has set the basis since the beginning of
human history for our sense of what is beautiful and what initiates all our seminal ineffable sublime feelings
about the nature of love, life, desire, destiny, eternity, ad infinitum. The curvatures and symmetries of the
human body even lay the geometric basis for the artistic structures of all our art forms, not only for the visual
arts but also for literature and architecture. Given the primacy of the body as the beginning of all that we are
in life, and given the eye as the primary receiver for the collection of all information in our lives, how could
the artistic nude not be a massively represented art form on a global arts forum like deviantART? And besides,
nudes are something peo

Ya know, I honestly don't think kids should be artist. Well no, what I mean is I don't think kids shouldn't be on DeviantART. I personally think so because it doesn't seem to do any good. I really think that they should bring the age requirement up for DA to like 22 or something personally. It just seems like kids here cause way to much trouble. Drama, bad art/Bases, things just getting to personal, to many arguments, at time suicides, just to many stuff. And it always seems to be with teenagers and stuff. This is DeviantART, not Facebook I think to myself sometimes. Things are getting way to social to me. I won't excuse myself out of this whole equation either since I'v been known to stir up a l'il trouble at times, but that's neither here nor there.
But I can't say its all teens here on DA. And by that I mean that there are few (oh so very few) teens that I'v come across on DA that seem incredibly professional, and even because of t

THAT'S HALF AGAIN AS MANY AS THE FIRST POKEDEX.
and I've still got three chapters to go...
As part of my research, I've been lurking on DA's Forums to document new species. So far, I have the Baww-er, the Primadonna, The Hijacker, Trivial Whiner, The Oblivious Emergency, the Overshare, and the Unintention-troll. This feels incomplete, however, and would like to consult the wisdom of people who have lurked there longer than I.

Il Codice del Volo - Leonardo da Vinci3 years ago in Personal More Like This
