Guided Meditation -
Shepard and Thane
The captain's quarters are far off from the engineering deck, but I can still hear the hum of the engines if I shut the music off and listen to the quiet. Most nights, it's enough to get me to sleep.
I'll lay back and watch the stars crawl by through the skylight, or watch the fish flit around in their tanks. Slowly, it becomes harder and harder to keep my eyes open. I'll roll over so the glow of the fish tank doesn't penetrate the darkness behind my closed eyes as I drift off to sleep.
The darkness is overwhelming. If I squint really, really hard I can just barely make out the pinpricks of distant stars. But it's so hard to keep my eyes open. I'm cold. Freezing cold, so cold I feel like my bones will implode and my skin will tear as it shrivels and tightens and I open my mouth to scream.
I can't. I open my mouth, try to

She arrives on an humble civilian transport to Kahje, alone, choosing to wait in customs with the rest of the passengers. Normal, just like everyone else.
Today is a day for mourning, for remembering, for honoring the lost. She stands on the rainy shores where his last rites were spoken, her desert willow flowers looking wilted from their long journey.
It's been six years since he passed. She's almost glad there is no headstone, no ashes, nothing for her to see except endless grey ocean. If there were anything left of him, if she should see him now, all the scars on her heart would be torn anew. Yes, what he said was right. Time has eased the memory of his passing. She has no tears now, not after so long, not after so many exhausting spent nights weeping at the loss of his warmth. But her heart is sore, and she will never forget the first man she truly loved.

"Save your lives?"Shepard asked carefully, raising a puzzled eyebrow.
The blonde sitting comfortably across from her nodded, seemingly indifferently tucking a lock of her long hair behind her ear. "You are in the business of saving people, Commander; not asking you to do something all that extraordinary".
Shepard scoffed. "I am really in no mood for games and with every passing moment, what patience I have mustered is dissipating rapidly," she said sharply, stealing a glance towards the new dark monitors across the room. Seeing Thane had cracked her wall of strict self control, not to mention her determination to keep a cool head in this, she was well aware. She was just about to tell this Elena person to get on with it and name her terms; only she knew that sort of reaction would put her directly in the Cerberus' operative's power and she knew she couldn't afford that.
She forced herself to draw in a deep breath, acutely aware of Elena watching her

"I'm proud of you kid," said Anderson.
"Just remember you were a human before you were a Spectre, you represent all of humanity with your actions," said Udina.
"I won't let you down," said Shepard confidently.
Anderson stepping down and giving Shepard the Normandy? It didn't feel right to her. Pushing papers wasn't his thing but he wanted to give her every chance to succeed in this mission. She knew how much this meant to him and she wasn't going to let

"That's easy for you to say, party boy. I've been a little busy fighting the galaxy's deadliest enemies. There's not a lot of time to dance when you're zooming around space. Not much shore leave. And anyway, dancing isn't important. I can shoot the head off a Geth from 200 yards away. So what if I don't have any rhythm?" He laughed and rose from the chair where he had been watching her.
"Everyone knows what you can do with a gun, Lola. And that's all well and good. But you need to relax, belleza. You can't run around killing things all the time. Sometimes a person has to blow off some steam, or just forget about the chaos for a while. Besides, you're the one who asked me to teach you to dance, remember?" She sighed and nodded her head.
"You're right. Sorry. It's just not something I've ever had the need to do before. But the crew dese
Mass Effect: FighterFelt inspired to write a fan fic about my female Shepard, Aine Shepard. I´m using her first name in this, even though no one does it in the game. Felt it would be weird for parents to call their kids on the last name . And for the story. It makes it easier for me to write, and it's a bit of a habit . As this is my first attempt to write a fan fic, please, please let me know what you think about it. I might change the story a bit, if need be. When they finally meet again after so long, the whole world seems to sigh with gratitude.
There isn't much to say, and even if there were, the right words do not exist. They hold each other and the chaos around them drifts away like smoke on the wind. For a moment, they forget about his illness, about the war. A shroud of hope settles around them. Everything is going to be okay.
In the depths of her mind she knows the sea will call him away far too soon. They have very little time left. But it all seems so distant when she crawls beneath the sheets with him. Their lips meet and she drinks him in. The memory of how he tastes will be as fleeting as this very moment, but why should that matter? Simple, irrefutable truths slip like sand through her fingers. They can change nothing. There isn't anything more to do except love and be loved.
And she loves him. She doesn't know why she's never told him, so she tells him now. The feeling is so true and powerful

Not in water, she realized. On it.
Slowly, she sat up, using a hand to brace herself against the water. She was in the middle of an endless ocean, lonely, desolate, ever-changing. She looked down at herself, and found herself clothed in a flowing dress that matched the color of the green-blue waters below her.
With a heart heavy with fear and sadness, she stood, slowly, testing her feet against the water. It held her up in perfect balance, supporting her. She turned, trying to find some sign of life, a clue of which way to go. All she was certain of was that she couldn't stay where she was. I have to move forward. Somewhere. Somehow.
The first step was frightening, but those that followed were less so. The farther she went, the more confident she became. She began to almost enjoy the ge

Commander Shepard glanced back to the now shut door behind her, not without some apprehension, though she made sure it wasn't visible. The man who had negotiated with her stood by her side, giving her an encouraging, if shifty smile, his comrades moving away to remove their helmets and their weapons as well.
Shepard noticed the neat weapon racks lining the small antechamber that stood just past the entrance to the mining complex; the men seemed to arrange their gear with practiced ease, she thought, which was probably the case. Her escort joined them briefly, setting his own helmet and rifle in one of the spaces before returning to her.
He was older than she had thought, a stately-looking man with a bit of gray in his temples. His expression was grim, though not unfriendly and he had not stopped watching her for a single moment, through knowing, steel-gray eyes that seemed to peer into her soul.
He reminded her a bit of Admiral Anderson, she thought vaguely; the same portly demeanour,

They had been through so much. The trust she had to put in the highly trained assassin so he could fight with her. Finding his lost son; their reuniting bringing him peace. Both of them knew he was sick through it all. After the suicide mission, he hit the final stages. She hated to see him suffering. Apparently, there was a cure but the doctors said that his time had come and nothing could be done.

Still sat on the briefing room floor, Shepard reasoned that she would have to leave at some point. Unfortunately. She had gotten quite comfortable. And may have fallen asleep for a few moments.
Ah well, she thought, I guess I'll go get ready then. She had mixed feelings. On the one hand, she didn't want to see Thane, let alone spend time pretending to be his girlfriend. Not right now, it was too embarrassing. She didn't want to make a fool of herself. But, on the other hand, she couldn't wait. Hell, if she couldn't be his real girlfriend, why not just enjoy playing pretend?
But what should I wear? She thought as she dawdled towards the lift. What do clubbers wear? Could I get away with combat boots? Probably not.
I have nothing sexy. Should I be considering something sexy? As she trudged out of the lift, into her cabin, she was surprised to see Tali and Kasumi were already there, and her bed was covered in clothes.

There seemed to be increased activity in the chamber outside his room, Thane thought. People came and went a lot more frequently than had been usual in the time he had been here, and none of them stopped, as was part of their routine, too, at the diagnostics' consoles that stood just outside the cubicle of reinforced glass he was contained in.
Something must be going on, the assassin thought; he wondered if it was something he might be able to use to get out of this place.
A couple of armed men swept past the room, disappearing through the far door and into the tunnel beyond at some point. Heavily armed men, Cerberus insignia on their equipment. Thane frowned briefly. Cerberus. Of course.
It made even less sense, though, he mused; Cerberus had been, in part, the reason he had died in the first place. Why would they bring him back from the dead, let alone cure him?
The answer was even more obvious than the question. Shepard. It all had to come back to her. The Illusive Man wanted to get

Except now she was dead and she suddenly couldn't sleep.

Shepard collapsed in a heap on the floor of her quarters. She stared at the ceiling, thin beads of sweat tracing down her face and neck, meditating to her heartbeat. She let her eyes close and her breathing steady. The low hum of the ship seeped into that part of her brain that comforted her.

The small, uninhabited planet seemed even more desolate, inhospitable and dismal than the digital images they had seen-and those had seemed pretty bleak, to be sure, but they did no justice to the actual locale. Rocky crevasses of rock so dark red it almost seemed black-until one squinted their eyes and looked a bit closer-alternated with flat expanses of baked orange-tinged earth, dotted with the occasional darker-shaded dunes where-presumably- thresher maws burrowed in and out of the ground. All that was overshadowed by a bloody red, sunless sky that rendered the landscape into an even grimmer, almost ominous red haze of a light that seemed to restrict visibility and confuse distances remarkably. It was impossible to tell if the next dune that the naked eye meandered to was a few paces away or a few dozen miles.
The shuttle landed, a little less aptly than usual in a small crevice between two rocky hills of crimson stone, a good distance from their destination. "Sorry abou

Jane Shepard winced at the menace in Garrus' voice. She stood in the middle of the wards on the Citadel, in front of a turian who Garrus had every reason to hate. She was in her full gear, weapons and all, but the man in front of her was in civilian clothes, completely unarmed, just like most of the people in the wards. Usually she felt fine as she walked through the Citadel; hell, even on the Presidium she didn't feel out of place.
But today was different. When Garrus asked her to help him kill Sidonis, she agreed because it would help him close the door on a section of his life that tormented him every day. She knew how Garrus felt because she had done the same thing with the things of her past. After Akuze, Shepard was haunted by all the things she could have done differently. She found ways to close those doors, and now she thought that

She has more experience with reapers than he, and her unease reflects on him. Carefully, she explains that she’s chosen only her most reliable crew members for this mission: himself and Garrus.
“Reapers have this effect called indoctrination,” Shepard continues. “I won’t get into the details but basically the more time we spend inside that thing, the more pull it has on our minds. We need to get in and get what we need as quickly as possible.”

MiraclesFor the moment the battlefield on Menae was quiet. Garrus took solace in the silence and allowed himself to rest against a few propped up battlement canisters, his sniper rifle lying casually over his lap. He tried very hard not to look in the direction of Palaven, where pools of fire burned away everything that his people had worked so hard to build over the thousands of years their civilization had spawned. It was hard not to, and once in a while his eyes would gaze over toward Cipritine despite his attempts to look everywhere but. It was hard to miss: the largest lake of fire and destruction visible. Their vacation plans take them to a beautiful resort world with especially private accommodations. There’s no one around for miles. Around their small oasis cabana, the desert sand stretches endlessly beneath a clear sky - a breathtaking and serene landscape.

Stretched out on the pale yellow sand is Thane, slowly arcing from one fluid curve into another as he stretches before his morning routine. His nylon and leather ensemble is long forgotten and packed away in their room, and the only thing adorning his athletic body is a pair of tight black shorts.
