A Week in dA Related - #043

Sat May 19, 2012, 9:21 AM

Introduction

Welcome to the next installment of A Week in dA Related!

A Week in dA Related is a weekly news article series that aims to bring you the most important and fun deviantART and dA Related news from the previous week. It also includes a handful of features from the gallery that were submitted in the last 7 days. :)

If you have any deviantART Related news you'd like to share, shoot a note to bradleysays.

This issue covers May 14th to May 20th, 2012

From the Writer

First of all, I hope you all had a splendid week. There were some exciting new changes on dA this week. The one that most of you should be already aware of are username changes. The deviantART community as a whole seem to be split on whether it's beneficial to the community. I'd really love to hear what you think about it all. :)

Another major thing is our dA Related CV, namenotrequired has taken over another gallery - Community Projects. While he is still looking over dA Related, it is now only temporary. This means that there is in fact a position available for dA Related, and I encourage you to apply if you think you'd be up for it. Read this blog for more information.

Discuss! What do you think of the username changes?

Ahoy guys! :ahoy:

How are you today ?
In this Fractal in nature article, last time we spoke about snowflakes and Earth Views, this time we will see something kinda different as it's not really made by the nature but made by manipulating some aerial landscape photography!

to quote the article  :
David Thomas Smith invites us to discover its “Anthropocene” project about the complexity of the structures and modern architecture. Composing works from aerial photographs taken by satellite handled, duplicated and reworked.

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Update to deviantART Mobile

In October, we launched the new mobile site to everyone, and while we stand by its design and functionality, we received valid statements regarding older devices not being compatible with the new layout. With this in mind, we've brought back the old mobile site for older devices, with the option to switch to one or the other depending on your preference.

For said devices, a banner will appear on the main deviantART page that says, "Touch here to switch to deviantART's legacy mobile site," which will reload the page with the old mobile layout if tapped. If you would like to return to the new mobile layout, you can do so by tapping the Menu button and selecting "Switch to New Mobile Layout" from there.

Please note: while we are bringing the old mobile site back for these devices, it is a legacy version of the mobile site, meaning that we will not provide updates to this layout, and technical support will be limited.

Proposed Changes to the Anthro Gallery

KovoWolf is heading up potential changes to the category structure of the Anthro gallery, and your feedback would help shape changes made in the future.

Change Log

  • A horizontal scrollbar was present in Firefox for some users at a narrow browser resolution. Fixed by yury-n
  • There were some errors encountered when purchasing discounted items with deviantART Points, if the buyer didn't have enough Points before the discount was applied to the total. Fixed by yury-n
  • There were some delays in processing thumbnails for newly submitted deviations, as well as sending deviantWATCH messages. The backlog was quickly processed. Fixed by chris
  • More Like This was briefly unavailable. Fixed by chris

Sta.sh / New Submit

  • Some deviations stated they were submitted from Sta.sh when they weren't. Fixed by samshull
  • Items in Sta.sh now display which app they were submitted from. Fixed by adahacker
  • Logging into Sta.sh in Safari would sometimes fail and display an incorrect error message. Fixed by adahacker
  • Pressing escape would exit both the deviation and the stack, for fast browsers. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The description box wouldn't expand when content was pasted in. Fixed by samshull
  • When submitting a deviation to both Scraps and Groups, the deviation would go to the Groups but not to Scraps. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Deviants were unable to set preview images for ZIP files. Fixed by adahacker
  • When submitting text, the page would always trigger a "Mature Content not selected" error, even if it was selected. Fixed by adahacker
  • When adding text, the text preview wouldn't reflect the text's actual spacing. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When changing files, the new image would take the place of the category examples. Fixed by kouiskas
  • There was a javascript error when categorizing items written in Sta.sh Writer as Journals. Fixed by adahacker
  • Some deviation types were displaying an incorrect image preview during upload. Fixed by samshull
  • New deviants were being asked to agree to the Terms of Service with no way to actually do so. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Category errors wouldn't display properly when updating an already published deviation. Fixed by adahacker

Sta.sh Writer

  • Some Literature categories were displaying entries as Journals. Fixed by kemayo
  • The Google Webfonts list was out of date. Fixed by kemayo
  • Using "Edit with deviantART muro" would sometimes save slowly, and could get stuck on the "saving..." overlay. Fixed by kemayo
  • Sta.sh comments showed raw HTML when you restored a page after restarting your browser. Fixed by inazar
  • When leaving comments in Sta.sh, the comment field would not be blank after posting. Fixed by inazar
  • The "Show More" button in the sidebar was misaligned in IE8/9. Fixed by Alisey
  • Long titles in the sidebar would overlap. Fixed by Alisey
  • Thumbnails were not evenly spaced in the sidebar in Firefox. Fixed by Alisey
  • In Firefox, when copy and pasting content from a web page, hidden HTML code would sometimes become visible. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback left on last week's update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were pleased with the new tool to improve More Like This results. Nippey suggested that it would be helpful for the original deviation to scroll, so that members can have an easier time comparing the results to the starting deviation.
  • SougonNaTakumi mentioned that it would also be useful to mark particular deviations as good or bad matches for the source deviation.
  • Some deviants would like to be able to go directly to their Profile from Sta.sh. Suggested by Aren-Elsa
  • Deviants would like the option for endless scrolling on deviations in their Message Centers. Suggested by Yamitora1
  • Members would like to be able to change permissions for a Group Gallery Folder from that folder's page, rather than having to go to the Manage Members section of that Group's admin area. Suggested by IceWolf762
  • Some deviants would like to be notified if they are logged in for two or more sessions at once. Suggested by Bemari

deviantART muro for Critique
Some deviants have suggested using deviantART muro as a tool for critique. When giving critique, do you find it helpful to be able to leave a visual representation of what you mean, such as by redlining the work? (Redlining is when an artist draws a sketch over another artist's work to help find flaws in the original art.) As an artist, would you find it helpful if other artists could leave redlines as part of a critique on your art by using deviantART muro?

A shot that not only did the BOKEH theme just, but also captured one of the most important things when we talk photography, a moment. Urban and very easy, doesn't have to be difficult!

This was a close runner up that was up and sniffed the 1st place a couple times when we discussed our entries.

EDIT: Remember a while back there was a video showing how they do the CGI construction of the factory, school and lab but it got removed? Well it's back, and in its best quality. There's a little bit that was repeated with commentary in Studio 3D part 2, but I'm pretty sure the holomap stuff is completely new. Check it out below.

New SUBBED video, in two parts with an explanation on how they do the 3D animation.

Oh, and a new photo with new CGI poses.

Generation Two: Final Five

- E D I T -Due to some circumstances, Mango decided to add one more slot to the girls. Thank you ~

-E D I T 2- For those who plan on joining the Final Five contest, please comment below so we can keep track of whose app is whose v u v You have 3 days left! Fighting! -xMiichi
-EDIT3- Because  a holiday on Monday and a higher interest number Mango has decided to extend the due date of Final Five (six) to MAY. 30th (11:59 EDT) So get those app in for checks and give it all you got.

:new: CONTEST IS OFFICIALLY OVER

Please be on the look out for new information on selection of the six contest winners, and possible offers made to participants we deem qualified for other offers.
Cause Mango is feeling nice. Staff should be making selections and announcing winners by

June 1st -sometime during that day EDT-

Final Five is a contest we're holding to find the last five members for Generation Two. Of all the participants, we'll be choosing 3 boys and 2 girls.

Before we get into how to apply, let's begin with what happened? You see, when we created this group, we started off with a list of people to invite. These people are our friends, our supporters, and other strangers that we thought or more like Mango thought he could try to recruit. The group was originally intended to only have 48 slots, but as time went on we gained more popularity and chose go with the current number of our real life example, eighty-eight. Out of these eighty-eight, seventy-nine have accepted and we're still waiting on four to be accepted.

As a result, we have five slots left over.

Because we’re not an invite only group, we decided to add 40 slots to accommodate the non-invited public members. These members will be placed in GEN 3 or the Understudies, which will be later explained in another journal.

Now for the fun part. How do I apply for one of the final 5 slots? These final 5 represent the last of the Generation Two that we will accept. Generations with the exception of One (which is comprised of mostly staff and chosen members) decide which events and role one can have during our events system. So Gen 2 at this moment has the most freedom for events while Gen one are there to moderate and drive the stories.

To be considered a Final 5 participant, comment on this journal. Make sure to read the fine lines and every detail.
- Final 5 participants must draw their OC in the Standard variation Uniform. (NOT V1, Or V2, Standard Only)
- Three boys will be accepted to Team E only two girls will be accepted to Team G
- NO TRAPS ALLOWED
- Use Application Version One Only
- There’s an Art Standard in place for this contest. (I.E. Don't throw white dots on random places to make it SPARKLY. Your OC must be fully shaded and the expressions must fit the personality written in the bio)
- All writing on Application must be completed to standard
- Applications can only be sent in for check twice. (Via Group Note)
- Send all questions you have by Group Note or ask our Staff in Chat.
- Your application must be cleared by Three Staff members to be considered. (MANGO CANNOT BE ONE OF THEM) (go get to know the other staffs there’s 15 of them!)

Please Turn in your Application VIA Group Note with the Title "Final Five"

In our group usually we don’t have deadlines, instead we pick a reasonable time frame and end an event Without an actual set deadline or add a new chapter that develops the story. But this Contest is an exception.
Deadline: May 30th, 2013 (11:59EDT)

Applicants who do not make the selection for Final Five or the invites to be understudies, will be able to apply during the opening next month.

Have fun!

Rules may be subject to change and random slot additions may occur. Please pay attention to the journals. :iconluvluvplz:
