Winners: XMAS GiveawayAnd with the giveaway drawing to a close, I prepared the raffle list and found that by the end of it, there were a total of 1053 raffles, with over 300 entries! I'm so glad that so many people got into it, and more importantly, tagged their friends to get a bit into the festive season of sharing and giving! Reading some of the comments were so lovely to see it all in the atmosphere. Entries were allocated raffles based on the number of optional criteria and were then assigned their respective numbers onto an Excel spreadsheet. Three winners were then selected via random number generators.Winners: XMAS Giveaway3 weeks ago in Deviant Events More Like This

Developing Dapplebacks (Ratha GN Update #7 )(I'm pleased to tell you that the team completed all the character reference sheets and sent them to Sheila. She'll be making high-quality Giclee prints for Kickstarter backers. The early onset of fire season in Colorado due to the Western drought has slowed progress, since one of our artists is also a firefighter there. The recent Heartbleed Internet scare also cost us another two weeks of lost time, but we are back on track now.)Developing Dapplebacks (Ratha GN Update #7 )8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Once we designed the Named and UnNamed cats, we turned to their threehorn "deer" and dappleback horses. I had based my original dappleback conception on paintings of Eohippus, however Eo was far too ancent (Eocene), and far too tiny. Not only that, but Eo is no longer considered a horse, having been recently re-classified as a paleothere.
When I wrote Ratha's Courage, I based the dappleback horse on the pony-sized Parahippus of the Miocene, which fit better with the Named cats, who are a bit larger than cheetahs.

"I've mentioned this before, however, that was a long time ago when I had less of a following and perhaps less of an impact.
When you tell a fellow artist "Oh I wish I was as good as you!" or say things like "You're so talented I'm just going to stop making art/killmyself/cry", you don't flatter them. At best, you're merely raising them up by putting yourself down and they don't want that. At worst, you are making them very uncomfortable or actively distressing them. Even if you think you're joking, remember that this person probably hears this very frequently. It's a sore point. They may have some kind of emotional response to it beyond irritation.
So, let's go over the basics:
Wow, you've got a lot of skill!
You inspire me to work harder to become as good as you are.
Oh, you're so talented, I wish I was as talented as you!
You're so talented, I give up.
Remember that your words have an effect.
Yes, thank you! W

Glass Eyes:iconLyrak: Lyrak asks: "OK, question for folks who use glass/resin eyes for their sculpted portions: where the heck do you find them??? I am having trouble finding eyes of the correct size for stuff like this. o.o; "Glass Eyes2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know of two places you can buy eyes.
US: Van Dyke's Taxidermy
Personally I use a 10-14mm eye for my dolls. That is a standard size for birds, amphibians, some mammals and dolls so it's quite a common size to find.
You can also make your own if you have the time or inclination. You need to make a mould of a marble or something similar using platinum silicone, then when the silicone has cured you pour in crystal clear resin. You must use platinum silicone as tin silicone (RTV - room temperature vulcanization) silicone will inhibit the cure of the resin and it will stay tacky forever. You can paint the back of the resin cabochon with acrylics, inks, watercolours or

Serving the interests of influential combines, EU representatives are negotiating with the US government about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Using this agreement, US corporations are planning to develop new markets for products (such as chicken meat treated with chlorine, meat contaminated with hormones or GMO plants) and technologies (such as the extremely risky hydraulic fracturing) that are unwanted in the EU. Rural agriculture would be weakened and the industrialized agriculture would gain even more power. Lobbyists are already putting government representatives under enormous pressure.
Neither citizens nor members of the EU parliament are allowed to follow the negotiations, but leaked information show that the negotiators would like to see the biggest wishes of the combines fulfilled. Lax data protection and privatization of water supplies would also conquer Europe, while it’s
Hey, artists! Pokemon project! Giveaway concluded. How many Pokemon artists are interested in having their art be used in a Pokemon game? How many of you know about Pokemon Showdown!, Smogon's Pokemon battle simulator? As you might know, Pokemon X and Y is planning on migrating from 2-D sprites to 3-D models. The problem with that for Pokemon Showdown! is that it would require reworking the entire simulator for those 3-D models. Nintendo, which has fully-staffed programmers, has the manpower and time to rewrite Pokemon's code or create a game from scratch. Smogon does not. However, it does have the contributions of a Pokemon fanbase that can design sprites for Pokemon Showdown!.Hey, artists! Pokemon project! Giveaway concluded.1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What does the project entail? Sprites, of course! Pokemon Showdown! needs front, back, shiny, and animated sprites for all of the Pokemon coming out in Gen. VI. The XY Sprite Project is starting off well, but it could be even bet

Watercolor tips and tutorials!Hey guys. So I've been asked countless times to make a watercolor tutorial... and while I don't really have time to put that together right now (it's that crazy time of the semester) I did write out a few very basic tips regarding the nature of watercolor. I do plan on making an actual tutorial eventually as well, with pictures and more stuff about process. Perhaps this winter I can make a proper tutorial!Watercolor tips and tutorials!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
-Start with a ground wash at the beginning of painting something, with a high concentration of water. Starting with a light color base will help to unify the color scheme of the rest of the picture.
-Watercolor dries lighter than it looks when it's wet. Remember to keep this in mind. Gouache, on the other hand, dries darker. That's one of many things that makes combining gouache and watercolor tricky
-Work in layers, from light to dark. Don't expect to go straight from a white page to a dark color all at once! The darkest areas will come last.
-If you've got two areas of differ
