ACTA

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 23, 2012, 5:14 PM
Last week we've stopped Sopa and now it's time for ACTA:

www.inquisitr.com/184832/acta-…

Educate yourself, spread the message!
You can sign this petition as well: wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#…

more information:
www.reddit.com/r/politics/comm…

However, the most important thing to do is to vote all politicians who support these ridiculous laws out of office,
or while elections aren't happening send them lots of letters and make phone calls.
We proved that this works by defeating SOPA. ACTA is next.

Methods of rationality review

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 23, 2012, 10:05 AM
I used to think that fan-fictions are mostly silly, but to take a well known book like Harry Potter and to completely re-invent it, all while teaching people about rationality, science and reasoning?
That takes some serious writing skills.

I recommend you read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality here as well:
www.fanfiction.net/s/5782108/1…

Beware that it's not even concluded and that the unfinished story will probably leave you hanging at the last chapter.
Nevertheless it's a gread read.
I much prefer Eliezer Yudkowsky's Harry Potter to the original.
It's almost as if Harry Potter is replaced by someone like Ender from Ender's game, no longer someone who constantly suffers and complains, but someone who takes control/advantage of every possible situation.

One hundred and seven thumbs up.

it takes 'balls' to make art.

Journal Entry: Sat Jun 21, 2014, 3:36 AM
this is something I just wanna share with my watchers and followers, it's about the morale of artists - any artist, whether they draw, write, act - anything. creative people in general.

it seems a lot of people out there don't think it takes some kind of courage to post your work online for the world to see, but I reckon it does - because I see a lot of artists, especially young or beginner artists just starting out becoming demoralized quickly by the kind of comments they get about their art or their stories. for some, it *seems* all they get is a constant stream of criticism, well-meaning or not - "your anatomy needs work" or "_____ part bothers me but the rest is ok" kinda thing~ things that read like negative throwaway comments much of the time. I've been an artist nearly ten years so I've developed a thick skin, but it's easy to ruin the confidence of a learner with a stream of nitpicks. so if any of us are commenting on others' works, it's best to say something positive about their work, unless they ask for critique. when I comment on anyone - this is what I do, I say nothing negative unless they ask me to crit their work in a way that points out flaws, or if they ask me to be harsh. because I know that's not always what people are asking for when they upload to DA - sometimes they don't want their work picked apart and they just want someone to say something encouraging. (or nothing at all, which is why some disable comments, I guess.)

not everyone is aiming to be a professional artist. for those of us who are, we are definitely the ones who need critique and a varied range of opinions on our work, but not everyone does. I've seen some very upset artists almost put off art altogether by this idea that if they uploaded it, then it needs to be dismantled by an art critic.

by the same token, if you are an aspiring professional artist, you will NEED to develop a thick skin because people can and will criticize you at some point, especially if you become high-profile! you also need to get used to the idea not everyone will like what you do, and some people will be rude about the fact. and if you are aiming to be professional, it's helpful to know when your work isn't looking "right". critique and self-critique is an essential part of the process of becoming better.

artists are usually sensitive people and they can take criticism very much to heart. my advice is take it on board, but not to heart. a comment is just a comment after all; and if you are the commenter, try to think how what you say will make the artist feel. you are viewing a 'part of them' when you view their art, after all: a part of their imagination, their muse, their fascinations, personality, etc. :>

morale is very important to an artist - you do what you do to get a certain sense of peace or satisfaction from your art, especially working artists~ because hey, there are so many other less demanding and less poorly-paid professions we could be doing that would be less difficult than art. and it's important for an artist to look after their morale because without it, I've seen people give up completely: just shelve their art pens and the paper forever because the morale never came back. I hate seeing people give up or give in with their art, so try to take care of your artistic morale... and help others with theirs.

Can you solve these cases before the rest of the group?
When you comment with the answer, you put the name of a team down (Sherlock, John, Moriarty, or Lestrade) the first person from a team to have the correct answer will get the points for their team...

There will be a few as we go throughout the day.

So, here we go:

1. 'Mr. Lal was having an early walk. He had just crossed a bridge when he saw a crowd of people. Rushing to them, he found that they were crowding around a dead woman. Lal was a famous detective. He took the case and started his investigation. The woman seemed to have come for an early walk, too. Seeing her handbag lying nearby, Lal ruffled through it and found what he wanted - her identity card. Her name was Lakshmi, and her house was about a ten minute drive away. Her number was also written on her card. Lal phoned the given number.

"Is this Lakshmi's residence?"
"Yes. And I am her husband. What do you want?"
"Sir, your wife is dead."
"What! No way!"
"Sir, come here quickly."

About ten minutes later, a car pulled up. The husband got down, and on seeing the woman, rushed to her and started crying. Lal was about to console him when something flashed in his mind. He quickly had the husband arrested. Can you tell WHY?' -From Facebook (no cheating and looking it up!)
