An Argument against All-CapsThe problem:An Argument against All-Caps2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
As a writer you have certain obligations to your reader, obligations that if left unmet are grounds for the reader to set your work down for good. One such obligation is to do all you can to make your piece readable. This involves ridding your work of typos, smoothing out awkward phrasings and transitions, and otherwise. If there is anything you can do to make the reading process easier, you should make it happen.
Thus, we come to the issue at hand. In writing, it isn't uncommon for both professional and novice writers to stress words or sentences by capitalizing every letter. It often expresses shouting. For example:
Janette pushed him away and said, "DON'T touch me!"
Leonidas shouted, "TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL!"
This type of emphasis has been criticized throughout the years fo

As far as this tutorial's subject matter is concerned, I feel comfortable explaining about ninety percent of what follows. However, I want this to be as accurate as possible, so I've gone to other sources online to back me up (primarily to fill in the gaps of my knowledge in terminology). I've included the links to these sources immediately below as well as in the author's description. I will refer to them throughout the tutorial by their source number (Source 1, Source 2, etc). If you wish to better your grammar even further, I particularly recommend grammarbook.com (Sources 2 and 3). Note that all the examples I give in this tutorial were not taken from the sources; they are my own.

An Argument for "Said"Preface:An Argument for "Said"2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before reading this argument, I want to explain that the following principle applies primarily to writings of the English language. Although it may apply to others as well, I have learned through the comments below that at least in German and Russian this principle is reversed. Therefore, this is a principle of culture and linguistics, and unless you are planning to write in English, you should look to writers of your own language before making any decisions on the matter. That being said, on to the argument.
An Argument for "Said:"
When writing dialogue, one of the necessary elements is the use of "dialogue tags," which identify who is speaking (hence their other name, "identifiers"). They're pretty easy to recognize, but just so we're clear, here are a few examples with the tags in bold:
"It's quite sunny today," she said.
"Release her, you fiend!" he roared.

Samhain: Dante's Inferno is an interactive adventure here on deviantART to help us celebrate Halloween. It is sponsored by a small group of Community Volunteers and a few select community members and backed by Community Relations. The adventure will begin on October 10th and end on October 31st.
In the fourteenth century, an Italian poet named Dante Alighieri composed one of the most influential collections of poetry of all time: The Divine Comedy. In the first book, Inferno, Dante himself ventures through Hell, guided by the spirit of the Roman poet Virgil.
Samhain is a Sabbat, or blessed day of festival, that some Wiccans and some other pagan traditions celebrate in October. It is the day in which the spirits of the dead are closest to us, a day to celebrate those who have passed before us.
. . . What better time to visit the souls of Hell?
What do I have to do?
Introducing SKULLPAINTHi everyone! The last few months have been pretty hectic regarding work (and still are) as I'm trying to cope with multiple projects at the same time, so I've been away for a while...Introducing SKULLPAINT2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'd like to introduce SkullPaint, a new studio/website I've created in order to showcase a variety of different art services I'm offering to the public! These services apply to both professional studios/agencies that need superior quality production art, as well as individuals who are devoted RPG players, fantasy/sci-fi/horror fans, or just art collectors.
Here's a brief list with the services:
RPG Character Creation
If you are an elite RPG player, you can bring your game avatar to life with a highly detailed illustration of your character, designed based on the description you will provide. You can also choose among various options (color/bw, bust/full body). Impress your friends and have it as a reminder of your epic gaming moments!
Photomanipulation walkthroughStep 1: Idea (message, composition)Photomanipulation walkthrough2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You decided that you want to make a photomanipulation. But what to make? There are so many photomanipulations already out there and mostly with the same theme. So you decide you don't just want to stick a pretty girl onto a beautiful background. No you want to be original and have your manipulation portray a message everyone can relate to.
Think of things that are important to you, that lay close to your heart. They can be emotions (love, hate, sadness, anger) or experiences, hobbies (art, sports etc), things you are struggling with. Or they can be global themes like (beauty, money, economy, eating disorders, war, relationships etc.)
Of course if you choose to portray something as love there are many ways to do so. Do you want it to be a surreal depiction of love, or dark, fantasy, sci-fi, conceptual, humourous... your choice will of course decide the whole 'feel' of the image.
So choose wisely as they say.
Now that you have your theme you nee

This is probably the most important journal entry I've published here so far.
First of all, thank you for your feedback in these last few days and your submissions to the summer challenge.
Second:let us all welcome our new contributor, AnnaKirsten aboard! Welcome in our ranks, I hope you'll enjoy working with us
Third! NEW RULES. After asking you, we decided to introduce MILD quality filtering. This will be strictly objective. Our personal taste wont't dominate. The guidelines are easy to remember: only fractals with at least 3-4 varied properties will be accepted. So no basic gradient + mandelbrot zoom, or changed gradient + 3 branched newton will get into our gallery anymore.
Fourth: help and critique system. This will be fairly easy. We will have a new folder for artworks that demand critique. You will be permitted to submit there one piece per week, but quality filtering won't apply to them. We will
Don't ART for free ...Note written under the influence of several recent situations ...Don't ART for free ...10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Now, I understand that not everyone can/like/love to draw - but that does not mean that some people have to treat 'drawing people' as children. A few days ago my friend asked me if I draw him a portrait of him and his girlfriend. I agreed without hesitation ... But when I told how much the portrait will be cost - he was angry with me, that I will not do it for free! I understand that it is my friend - but I spend my free time, energy, etc. on it. So it's no longer just fun for me. It becomes a way of life ...
I wish that those of us - involved in the drawing - were taken more seriously. Because it is a job like any other. Not sitting behind a desk in an office does not mean that I do not work as hard ...
The situation is very well illustrated here:
Thanks for the past, present and futureI knew that the time would come, and I am so sorry, I was hoping it would be later in the future, but it is here: I can not thank you as I would like anymore. I have 4000 friends who follow my work and hundreds of fav every day (and that makes me great pleasure). Until today I wanted to tell you directly how I', grateful, but now I work 1 or 2 hours at the computer to thank, and commitments will not let me anymore. Definitely I will continue to respond to comments, but right now I want to thanks in advance all those who want to add my drawings to their collection and want to add my name to the list of friends. Thanks for the past, present and future1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Respect...I'm not sure what has happened to DA lately, but sadly I'm noticing more and more people are becoming rude and obnoxious when commenting on others work. This isn't just my work, I've noticed it across the whole site.Respect...7 months ago in Personal More Like This
It seems some people think it's absolutely ok to insult people, with absolutely no provocation, other than the fact they don't like their work or are jealous for some reason (the person's work makes them feel bad about themselves or they feel the person is getting more attention than them, for what they consider invalid reasons).
If you have something constructive or relevant to say about someone's work, no matter how negative, then that is absolutely ok. But to just be negative or plain rude to make yourself feel better, is never ok under any circumstances. Think before you type, how would you feel if someone wrote what you were about to write, to you, your partner or your friend? Would you find it helpful, hurtful, insulting? Would you have the guts to
Traditional Tuesdays #39Howdy peeps? Welcome to edition 39 of Traditional Tuesdays (yep, on a Wednesday again, oops). This week, like all of the other weeks, I'll be featuring fifteen works of art from the Traditional Gallery. Any more than that might and you might loss interest or it could cause your monitor to fail in an explosion of awesomeness. I would feel guilty if that were to happen, so I'm keeping it at fifteen! The Traditional gallery is a vast storeroom of work that covers many mediums and genres. I've tried to show a good mix of artwork, but I don't have room for them all. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!Traditional Tuesdays #392 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Watchers (Permanent) Feature :)Like many others, I have in the past featured the work of those who choose to watch me as a thank you. Today marked the number of watchers I have going past 2000 and I worked out that if I celebrate 10 watchers work per week it would take me 4 Years to say thank you to each one, and saying thank you every 4 years is not really good enoughWatchers (Permanent) Feature :)6 months ago in Personal More Like This
So I said to myself, Why not open a group up that is completely dedicated to those lovely bunch of people who watch me? I can then have a permanent place to showcase their work and to say thank you every second, minute and hour of each day
However, I was worried that some people may think it is a bit arrogant or maybe just a way of getting more 'watchers' - overcome with the need to make sure I am not upsetting anybody - I thought I would have a poll, and let you decide!
So just to confirm the idea....
This would be a group set up to display the work of just the people who watch me, no restrictions (within DA guidelines) on the type
Simple drawing tips.I have been asked a lot of times If I could make a drawing tutorial, and to be honest I do not really feel I am at that level yet, and there is allready so many out there.Simple drawing tips.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But some simple pointers I can certainly do.
So here we go, 10 simple and effective tips, general and spesific.
1. Draw a LOT: Sure, techniques help, tutorials are awesome and books is teh shit, but in the end there are no shortcuts, if you do not draw a lot you have nobody but yourself to blame if you feel you are progressing slowly.
Bring your scetchbook ( get one! ) with you wherever you go, draw anything and everything, and doodle if you are on the phone, just basicly draw a lot and build up that mental library, it will only do you good.
2. Shade with the form: For instance an upper/lower arm is cylindrical, if you shade right across it tends to make it look flat even after blending ontop, if you curve your shading along it creates a greater illusion

I could not have predicted the result, but it seems from the feedback that it was his beard that won the vote, and people found this a more interesting reference than the rest. I am cool with this as I chose all 4 options comfortable with having to draw any of them.
So almost down to business, but firstly I wanted to describe the stages of preparing the drawing and paper we will use to draw our chosen reference.
1. Cropping - Before drawing you need to decide if you are going to tackle the full reference or just part of it - some of this will be dictated to you by the reference itself, some of it will depend on how confident or comfortable you are with certain aspects of the reference. For example, if you hate drawing hair (I do !) then you may decide to cut that part out of the reference. If you look at this picture of Ewan, I would say that

So we hate to disappoint you all, but this group is beyond saving.
As you all well know, we shut down for a few weeks to make an attempt at reorganizing and making this function again. And as soon as we reopened, we found out we had missed one critical point- Admin assistants were only able to vote on two folders- Featured and Critique Requested- and no one except the Founder had the permissions to change that.
I am SO sick and tired of dancing around this bullshit and being blocked at every turn. Granted, I probably should have checked this before we made so many changes, as I should have known better. I've tried to go in and fix it so that my wonderful admins can vote on all folders, but once again I wonder why I even bothered trying to fix this bloody mess. I either get a DA error that it can't save the changes OR I get an error that says I don't "have permission to change these settings." Of course I don't, silly me for even trying. I sent a not-so-nice note to the
