Goals...?I've been thinking about this for a while now. What exactly do I want to do with comics? What are some of my goals? What's the future hold for my stuff? Here are just a couple of stream of conscious thoughts:
I don't want to be big on YouTube, that's for sure. I've never liked getting in-front of the camera, I don't have the time or ambition to work on animations anymore, and I certainly can't crank out videos as fast as some of the big guys over there. It's a huge competition and I just don't want to have anything to do with that. I think my youtube page is marked private and you have to have specific links to view anything. I might make an odd video here or there, but they're most likely just goofy things I do for fun, not for any sort of attention or recognition.
I'm curious about how I should move forward with DA. I think a majority of my haters are outraged that I'm popular on DA and that I'm content with drawing simple cartoons when I'm obviously talented enough to do more comple
Mature themes in American AnimationWhen I first discovered Anime, my mind was blown. Here were Japanese animations being made which told adult stories with sex, violence, and all sorts of things I'd never seen before done in American films. As a teenager the constant pandering to children and the reluctance to accept more mature themes and ideas in American animated films pissed me off. Why can't american cartoons be taken more seriously and have stuff for adults too outside of South Park and The Simpsons?Mature themes in American Animation2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In 1998 Stephen Spielberg tried to change that. After having a successful run of kids cartoons (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pink and the Brain, etc), he took it a step further by giving us a PRIME TIME cartoon series aimed at adults. It was called "Invasion America." It was a sci-fi epic, featured a slew of big name actors including Leonard Nimoy, and featured more adult oriented themes such as sex, violence, and swearing!
It sucked and was a resounding failure.
The epic plot they were trying to weave would never be compl
Moving on... CONTEST! WOO!That last journal was a doozie wasn't it? Let's do something fun instead and get our minds out of the muddy waters of art definitions for a minute.Moving on... CONTEST! WOO!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been asked to do a mini drawing competition. Kinda like what :iconhumon: just did. So here's a really basic run down of the rules in no way copied and pasted from her journal with minor alterations: j/k
The Drawing Competition:
1. Draw any of TomPreston's characters (SYAC, Alex Ze Pirate, or any smaller groups) in London.
2. Upload the image to your dA gallery.
3. Comment on this journal (or the main Fresh Epics comment box) with a link to your image.
- I'll then +Fav/add to collection it.
- I'll look though the collection and pick the winners.
Winners will get Alex Ze Pirate book 2 and SYAC Book 1, plus posters! YAY!
It should go without saying but parodies, trolling, hate art, or explicit sexual stuff = instant disqualifying. I mean, that should be a given but it needs to be said I suppose.
Deadline: A week from today: May 16th.

If you want power, you need to turn the outlets on, and to do that you gotta push a switch down.
TV has far fewer commercial breaks.
English police are super nice (watched the British version of "COPS" and was amazed at how polite everyone was, even the criminals).

American-centric music doesn't stay here (Heard "Sweet Home Alabama" quite a number of times over there).
You are not expected to tip people (this was very hard for me to accept and I always felt guilty not tipping our waiters).
You are not expected to clean up your messes in food courts or.. anywhere actually (Janitors come by and clean up for you. Has something to do with security and getting rid of bomb threats).
Elevators are called Lifts.

E3, Kickstarter, laptops, memes, and more!About E3 DisappointmentE3, Kickstarter, laptops, memes, and more!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
We go through this every year, but it never seems to sink in. E3 is a trade show, not a fanboy convention. E3 is about the respective companies getting up on stage and showcasing their plans for the future and the products that will continue to make their investors money. E3 isn't even open to the public, yet every single year it's the same old dance of fans complaining "why wasn't ____ shown?"
The people who follow E3 coverage need to remember that they are not the actual target audience of the convention. Yes, you and I probably don't care about casual games and want more info on hardcore titles, but their investors want to know about them because they know it's going to make them oodles of money. Also, to be fair, you don't need big lavish presentations of huge blockbuster titles to know whether or not you're gonna buy them. That's why most of the companies only give a glimpse of them because they're always huge sellers anyway, they don't need to remin

Anyway, "I've come to the conclusion that one useless man is called a disgrace. That TWO a lawfirm. And that three or more become a CONGRESS! And by god I have had this congress! For 10 years King George and his-" oh... wait... hang on...
I meant to say I've come to the obvious conclusion that there's far too much hate on the internet. And while I might speak my mind about issues I feel are important, I myself have a tendency to focus a bit too much on the negativity side of things and not appreciate all the wonderful wonderful people there are around me.
So for this next week or so, I wanna try something different. I'm gonna try to make comics about being positive and happy about who you are, both as an artist and a person. I'm gonna start reblogging onto tumblr stuff I like from my favs or from fans too. And I'm going to try to say thank you to my fans ore often.

BRAVE was... ok.Saw Brave the other night. I had deliberately kept all info about this movie away from me so that I could go in with a fresh viewpoint. There might be spoilers here, so if you haven't seen the movie tread carefully through this journal. To be honest, I don't really want to talk about the movie all that much, but more or less the public perception of this movie.BRAVE was... ok.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Brave was quite good, but I have a feeling it's not gonna have the impact so many people were expecting it to. Prior to the release, the fact that this was a PIXAR princess story with a female lead was SUCH a huge deal to some people. I think there were some lofty expectations that this was going to trump Disney princess stories and show women as strong capable role models without resorting to typical cliches and what not...
I'm not sure if that's what PIXAR was going for, in fact, the biggest complaint being lobbied against Brave is that it's both "too safe" and "too conventionally Disney." Brave is a good movie, but it does fo
Sins of an ArtistI've been under fire recently for having the audacity to admit publicly that improving my art has never been, and never was, an ultimate goal of mine. Apparently that's like committing some sort of mortal sin in the art community. I've had trouble expressing myself about it too, because brushing off improvement for improvement sake makes me look like I'm uncaring, egocentric, and stubborn. But after a recent post I was given much more clarity in understanding the issue and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.Sins of an Artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the recent exchange I was basically told this: "If doing what you love isn't about dedicating your life to improving your art, you aren't an artist."
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but making art has never been solely about the technical expertise. Even in college, outside the handful of foundation courses you take in freshman year, perfection of the craft is often secondary to concepts and ideas and your ability to evoke feelings and emotions in your audience.
I think I can draw again!I think I might be getting my creativity back( not sure if anyone has notice...but I have hardly drawn anything for months :iconcryforeverplz...I guess its just that maybe I felt like all the stuff I was watching was getting stale ( either the anime/manga wasn't worth watching anymore considering the latest chapters e.g Naruto/Bleach..etc or the Anime was so short that I had explored most of the possibilities already e.g Death Note) I need new stuff! Avatar is amazing...Its quite childish in places but its light hearted and has a plot that progresses and has a deeper meaning etc. And the characters are adorable! specially Appa...Omg he is so cute. Oh and too the the countless droves of people who are asking me if I have been living in a cave my whole life and why haven't I watched Avatar before? Unfocused RambleI talk too much.Unfocused Ramble1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I think that's the main problem I have.
It's pretty understandable that I do really, since so many people seem to misunderstand everything I say that I want to try to convey clearly and precisely what I mean to avoid any mistakes in the future.
But it always seems to backfire.
And in my attempts to defend or back up what I meant, I come across as arrogant and douchy.
I'm really not. I'm actually a very nice person, and anyone who's met me at a convention knows this. But online... anytime I express my thoughts, problems, issues, etc there's a plethora of adjectives to describe how awful of a person I am. And even the tiniest thing I say echoes across the interwebs.
So maybe I'm trying too hard to defend myself...
Maybe I shouldn't try to interact with my fans?
Maybe I should just... make comics.
Guess it couldn't hurt to try...

Well, this is pretty ironic. Remember my poll about cyber-bullying I posted some time ago? Well, right now I'm going through something like that. Cyber-bullying.
So, some person that I'm not going to name and who I don't know, ever met or even ever spoke to has been sending mass PM's to all my friends, watchers and all my club members lies and slander about me, and the sad this is, a lot of people for some reason fall for it. To some they send lies that my artwork is stolen, to some that I'm a hacker/script kiddy and to some that I'm a spammer bot spamming and exploiting bugs or holes in the system. And he encourages everyone to report me to dA staff.
Now, I have never done any of these things, so I'm really confident reporting me will do no good. But why do it? Why spread slander and lies about me? Please, people, I beg you, don't believe this person. He's just a person with 2 deviations and really low activity, so it's definitely someone's sockpuppet. Of course nobody

First off this convention has to be one of the busiest and biggest conventions I have ever been to. I mean, I've been to the NYC comic con before and it was nothing like this! The turnout has been absolutely fantastic! Thank you everyone for coming out to see me!
I've had a few fans give me artwork and that's always a treat. One even reshape my kneaded eraser into pinky pie for me too. That was quite a lark! As you know, humon, vitaly, and stupid fox are here too and we have an anthology we've been selling. After a while of selling them I started to notice humon and vitaly were writing messages back and fourth like "bring me cake" or "the cake is for me! Not you!" and other fun stuff.
Overall I have been incredibly impressed at the intensity of this convention. I really have not experienced anything like it!
However, as awesome as this convention has been t
London is shaping up.I've been informed that there's been a crackdown on fanart being sold at the MCM Expo, which my London poster obviously falls under. A lot of artists are apparently pissed about this (rightly so), and we're going to have to check with the convention guys to make sure I can still sell my poster there. My table will be separated from the rest of the Fresh Epics team. Due to some sort of oversight, my table will be placed one isle away from my group. It's not a huge deal, but it is frustrating that I won't be able to sit near my fellow artists, especially since I'm gonna be a fish out of water as it is.
I also can't bring my retractable banner to indicate who I am. Since I'm no longer sitting with the Fresh Epics guys, that's even more frustrating as I won't be able to rely on the Fresh Epics name to help remind people who I am. I might be able to make up a mock banner or plaque
Late Lesson LearnedWhile doing research for the new SYAC, I actually stumbled upon something truthful on TVtropes.org. Usually I take everything from that site with a grain of salt, but this one bit actually was surprisingly honest and truthful about webcomics:Late Lesson Learned1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Webcomics work on a very different set of standards than other fiction. Almost all webcomic authors are working pretty much entirely alone as they both draw and script their comics and most do not plan any further along than to the end of their current story sometimes not even that far.
Many of them try to adhere to a schedule they aren't really capable of meeting, resulting in them rushing to meet their deadline and making mistakes that should be avoidable. So many of the good 10% lack qualities standard in traditionally professional works. This can be because of the lack of editorial input as well as the lack of lead time. Not all webcomics suffer from this, though, and even the ones that do can still be interesting. Arguably, some str
$30 Commissions -OPEN-Well, it's been about 6 months so... I'm gonna start accepting commissions again.$30 Commissions -OPEN-1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I don't generally do commissions very often because I'm pretty bad at mailing things and replying to e-mails... So I'm gonna try to streamline this process to make it easier for all of us. Sound good? Please read the rules carefully below. They're pretty basic stuff, and I've included a template at the bottom to make the process even simpler.
***RULES PLEASE READ***
1) Price: Flat rate of $30 per page. I'm at liberty to add an additional $5-$10 if I feel the work is more ambitious than the flat rate. For example, don't expect to commission me to draw all 600+ pokemon for $30, that's just silly. We'll discuss prices more in e-mails if it comes up, but for the most part $30 should cover just about everything.
2) No fetish stuff.
3) I'm only going to accept digital commissions. I'm absolutely awful at sending original artwork through the mail, and I don't want to keep people waiting for their work. Wh
Internet BullyingFor many kids growing up in the 80's, if you were bullied in school you were able to "tough it out" because you knew your social interaction with said bully was isolated only to when you were in close proximity of them. When the bell range and you went home, you could dismiss the bully's taunting and physical abuse and be reminded of friends and family who supported you and kept your spirits up.Internet Bullying2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But in today's day and age of seemingly constant online connectivity, the "victims" of bullying have a harder time escaping. Once the bell rings, they're still potentially subject to be bullied via verbal assaults online, which often goes completely unnoticed by parents and friends. The worse part of this is that we're often told that because it happens "on the internet" there's no real consequences of trolling or bullying, which is far from true.
I've never accepted the excuse that just because "it happens on the internet" means it can't personally harm you in real life. Part of that is from m
Censoring the InternetA few weeks ago I made mention of feminist Anita Sarkeesian who started a kickstarter for a web series called "Tropes Vs Women" specifically centered around how women are portrayed in video games.Censoring the Internet1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Despite the fact that kickstarters are payed for by people who've made the decision they want to contribute their money to the project, Anita came under attack from gamers for "scamming" audiences when her fund far exceeded the target goal. Just this past week it's come out that a 25 year old man from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada, created a video game where the object is to punch the crap out of Anita. Wounds, bruises, and blood gush out the more you beat her up in this virtual game, and it's drawn some widespread attention.
Whether you agree with her viewpoint is not the issue, it's the fact that this retaliation is just "wrong" on so many levels. Do these people realize that what they're doing is shooting themselves in the foot? Making a video game where you beat up someone who's making

Anthology DoodlesIn my most recent SYAC I touched upon how all us Fresh Epics artists started to doodle on the anthology covers.Anthology Doodles2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Then someone suggested fans who bought the anthology should post pictures so others can see the doodles too.
Oh dear, what have I started?
So here's what I'll do. If you bought a Fresh Epic's anthology that we all doodled something funny on, take a picture of the cover and submit it to your scraps and send me a link (Submitted to scraps to keep the clutter down from the main DA pages since technically this isn't suppose to be a site like photobuckets). I'll post them all up in a big journal so everyone can see all the variations.
How's that sound? Sound like fun?
Ok so just to be clear...
1. If you bought a copy of the Fresh Epic's Anthology where we doodled on it, take a picture
2. Upload it to your scraps
3. Post the link here in THIS journal. Don't send me e-mails or notes, it'll just get cluttered that way.
4. I'll post them as I get th

Okay. So I decided to do the chibi animation point commissions.
It's 20 points for one chibi animation. 5 extra points if you want me to make it into a DA avatar for you. Here are a couple examples of what they're like:
Since this is the first time I've ever done point commissions, here are a couple of rules. I'm going to start this slowly.
1. Only one person per animation. No pairings. No second person.
2. You can tell me what expression you'd like or have me choose on my own. But the expressions must be simple. I'm starting out slow so please choose an expression that is only two frames. As time goes by, I may allow more smooth and complicated animations.
3. It can be any video game, anime or manga character you want. It can also be your OC. I
