“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism—and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him, and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man. But, if he’s reasonably strong—and lucky—he can emerge from this twilight of the soul into a rebirth of life’s elan. Both because of and in spite of h

Getting started with concept art and landscapesHi guys,Getting started with concept art and landscapes2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've received a lot of notes from people who are interested in getting into concept art and/or landscapes and I always struggle to come up with advice that doesn't seem awfully confusing. I can't say I'm a veteran in this industry, but since people keep asking me and I do have experience, here's my 2 cents (PSA: by no means a comprehensive guide or the absolute truth). I am very humble when it comes to learning this stuff and I never know enough myself, but these are some of my thoughts that came up when a student sent me a note today;
My best advice is to climb to the tree from the root and accept that there's no shortcut.
Concept art is a very loose term. It can mean anything from sketching characters, enemies, vehicles and objects to doing detailed plans of level visual design or landscapes. Game concept art can also serve a lot of purposes. Most of the time the most crucial purpose of concept art is to communicate (a) game designers' idea of how a game looks
On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo

About The School
Higashimori High School is a prestigious private institution in Kirimori City, Japan.
It welcomes students from Japan, and even outside of the country, keeping the doors of opportunity open for those who deserve it.
The school prides itself of having high educational standards, a faculty and staff body of professionals in their chosen fields, and high quality of facilities to establish a suitable environment for student learning.
Suffering from an accident-induced fire five years ago, the school underwent a massive change and improvement when the school’s new management took over its reconstruction.
To this day, Higashimori High School continues to hold the firm belief that the best education should be attainable to all, but only to those who have the potential to succeed.
These subjects are taught to all year levels twice a week.

Please take a look, there are some awesome peeps here
note: Faving this journal might help with your exposure but it's solely up to your fellow deviants ~
It takes me a while to put these together and it's a bit of a tedious process, so if you commented on my other journal to be featured, please take a look at everyone else's work too. After all, it's only fair that way and if you don't, it's just a little selfish and your conscience will bug you . So yah, share the love, guys!
These are ordered first come first serve style; I will be showing around 50 pieces at one time (I still have a lot to go through and it adds up every time i put up a feature journal), and be featuring once a week or bi-weekly as to not clog up your message boxes. It'll p

Different titles for different jobs, but they overlap and it's where they overlap the trouble normally comes.
I know this is a community of artists but it doesn't hurt to understand who the people are that you are approaching for work. What follows is a brief description of what each normally have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. This is by no means a complete list of their duties but are usually at the core.

MANAGING EDITOR These guys watch the editors and are usually responsible for their performance while at the same time having responsibilities of their own.

Another in a series of mind boggling trips into the inner workings of the industry OR I bet you thought it was going to be more fun than this.
There is often talk of cycles in comics, how readers turn over every 3/4/5/25 years, booms and busts, everyone is leaving for Hollywood, kids don't read comics because of video games
Do you know how many are true?
Probably all of them. Twenty-odd years ago, it was the established fact that the majority of comic book readers came and went in three years. Most of the market wasn't around long enough to even notice that certain characters came back time after time.
The comic book industry has had its own share of recessions. Had its fair share of booms too. Maybe more than its fair share, fighting against nature some might say.
Hollywood has always courted the industry. Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas

BIXEL : Upcoming Icon SetBIXEL : Upcoming Icon Set3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Big, retro, pixel style icon set. I wait and wait for many years, but no one made it happened yet. I mean, there are some - about 10 icons or so...., but not a whole set, that's for sure.
and don't even mention that the icon design 'trend' right now goes to Hi-resolution, and even higher. My hope is null.
I used to heard someone said that 'if you want something, don't wait for other, make it happened yourself'
My experiences in pixel art is very limit, but I don't want to wait anymore. I will make it happened with my own strength.
This will be long-term iconset, so that means I will update it regularly, to include many icon as much as possible.

Book RecommendationsHey there!Book Recommendations4 years ago in Personal More Like This
As usually, I do apologize everyone for my lacking activity here on dA (and on internet in general). I know, I said that probably in couple past journals.... so what is the point? Just making sure if anyone isn't upset/feel offended/whatever about my inactivity or I "ignore" everyone . Hopefully it's understandable that I live more with real life than on the internet.
But I do feel bad somehow sometimes.... since I'm a Senior member on dA (and DA): my inactivity causes me to feel of guilt because I should be more active, inspire positively, help, write more, support you all and... be active like a few months ago.
But! Someday I'll make it up everything, I have few ideas and projects as "tutorials" for artists but I never got the chance to work and realize them....
...so, thank you for being patient with me and all your support!
Now, lately I'd really love to get some books in english language (yes, again I'm out of my home...) because reading books (intere

My Two cents on Portfolio ReviewsYou know, I see quite a bit of portfolio on a regular basis, and even more so when I go to comic con and CTN.My Two cents on Portfolio Reviews3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time around was the same thing, I saw quite a few portfolios. Some good ones and some that miss the mark.
There were a few in particular that caught my eye.. a few extremely good ones, and a few that just didn't work, and I wanted to try and share my opinions about portfolios in general.
This is just my point of view, based on MY experience and definitely not a definitely law, rule, or "must do". Just what I noticed in many student's and young professional's portfolios.
The first thing that strikes me is how similar portfolios can be from one student to another..I can almost always tell when one student is from Art Center, San Jose State, Otis, Sheridan or any other major school. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Mainly a bad thing though
Just a few personal thoughts on portfolios since I just came back from comic con and saw a ton over there.
Your portfolio should be a r

okay, so after a swarm of questions many of which left me with my jaw on the floor... i realized something...
people are afraid of pushing a button to see what it does
okay, to backtrack first. i am self taught in photoshop, had no books had no tutorials, had a borrowed i think 7... dunno which was before cs2 when i started, i learned it by ....pressing a button and seeing what it does
i explored, i tried stuff out.
i had no teachers no schools no education on this stuff
i saw a button i pressed it.
that is how about 9 years ago when i first decided to try and apply digital coloring to early pages of ravine, i was dabbing paint on a page. i came to the point where i had to paint a waterfall. so , just for fun i tried putting scattering on the foam brush i made, a simple thing. and i was gonna see if smudge could be scattered. it had a weird side effect.
Doing Comics Professionally (best/worst idea)I remember back in Highschool I had this vision of what I was going to be doing with comics. I had these grandiose ideas that I'd land some graphic novel gig that was "Hollywood famous" and I'd be rolling in the dough, signing autographs for adoring fans, lights, camera, action--etc. ...and I did that, actually. I landed a Hollywood-famous graphic novel gig. I wasn't rolling in the dough but I had made more money than I'd ever seen in my entire lifetime, considering that I was of the below average - minimum wage working class up until that point. I went to cons by my own admission. I didn't have big companies sponsoring me so the funding usually came out of my own pockets. And there were a few fans of my work who I did live commissions for (thankyou guys, I was able to eat for another week). Dream accomplished right? ...but I ask myself was it worth it. Well, yes and I have a few regrets.Doing Comics Professionally (best/worst idea)1 year ago in Personal More Like This

THE WIDOWS OF VRINDAVANHOW THE WIDOWS OF VRINDAVAN GOT THEIR COLOR BACKTHE WIDOWS OF VRINDAVAN2 years ago in Personal More Like This
by ANDREA DE FRANCISCIS & MARIA TAVERNINI
Amriti is staring at the other women while they dance in a cloud of colors. She wears a shy smile and tears of joy dampen her eyes. Her white sari is stained with the colors of Holi, the Hindu festival that marks the beginning of spring. This is unusual for many Indian widows; tradition dictates that they mourn the memory of their husbands until they die.
In many areas of the subcontinent, widows still suffer abuse and humiliation. Considered pariahs by patriarchal Indian society, they are stigmatized by prejudices and superstitions. Mistreated and forced from home, many widows seek shelter in the holy city of Vrindavan, on the banks of Yamuna River, where Lord Krishna is believed to have spent his childhood, and where today thousands of neglected women live in the ashrams run by the government. They pray and wait to die.
Last year, for the first time since the death of their

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser
