The Paper Chain Projectschongslipper sent us a message telling us about a project that could work in conjunction with The Butterfly Project. It is called The Paper Chain Project, and here are the rules:The Paper Chain Project2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. For every day you go without self harming, add a colourful link to the paper chain.
2. If you relapse, just add a white link to to the chain and carry on the chain without any disruption.
3. Over time the paper chain will grow in length.
4. And you can see your progress, and see that even if you do relapse, the are still days you go without hurting yourself. The colourful links.
5. Over time and through your recovery watch the amount of coloured links begin to increase, and the amount of white links begin to decrease.
6. If you feel like hurting yourself, look at the paper chain and realise just how far you've made it, and realise that if you've resisted before you can do it again.
It is another great idea to help deal with self-injury. I hope some of you will give it a shot and I hope it helps you. &

Children's Literature, Morality + Changing IdealsIntroductionChildren's Literature, Morality + Changing Ideals2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
With the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century, and its gradual integration into society, people at last had access to literature. It was William Caxton who first saw the opportunity to make money by printing and selling those stories and fables hitherto told by word of mouth.
At this time, literature did not have age-specific target audiences. Inevitably, some stories appealed to children more than others. Robin Hood was especially popular, while Aesop’s fables offered entertainment and life lessons to adults and children alike.
It is, of course, impossible to say exactly when and how literature was identified as a useful tool in teaching morality to children. It is speculated that there was no concept of ‘childhood’ before the eighteenth century, although historians debate this, as historians are apt to do.

One of those 'Existential' DaysI very rarely just...feel like writing a journal on DA. My journals are all about commissions, or art theft, or advertising, pretty much. I keep most of my life to myself, because my 3,000+ watchers have better things to read about or do than listen to me ramble. But I've had a bad day that has petered out into one of those 'deep thought' sorts of days and I just feel like sharing bits of my life. TL;DR, I suppose...One of those 'Existential' Days1 year ago in Personal More Like This
To start with, I've lost a golden job opportunity. In late June, I applied at my favorite candle store, and they interviewed me. They liked me enough to call me back for a second interview, which hasn't happened to me since I got my first/only job a couple years ago. I thought I had it in the bag, then...after the second interview, they said they'd call me back in a week. Well, they didn't, so I called them in a week instead. They put me off another week. This happened three times, three or four weeks. Most people would have stopped by then, but each time I called, the man

Street Painting Chalk Art | Pastel and Chalk GuideStreet Painting Chalk Art Pastel and Chalk GuideStreet Painting Chalk Art | Pastel and Chalk Guide1 year ago in Personal More Like This
When I started street painting I relied heavily by the recommendations of other artists of what products to use. I really didn't find a whole lot of information in the beginning, and I soon discovered that not all Chalk/Pastels are created equally. This is a good thing because depending on what kind of surface you are working on will call for different grade of product. And learning what's best to use is just trial and error. Not only that, but artists have different styles and methods they like to use and the products will always reflect that. I'm only 3 years into working with this medium and admittedly so I'm still very much learning, but I figured I would take a stab at writing down an "Art Pastel and Chalk Guide" to help any beginners out there.
Keep in mind I live in the USA, so I'm going to be linking to stores and products I know of in the US. But I'm sure these can be found in your area as well in
Alright, ENOUGH. *EDIT*Wow, turns out I don't even HAVE to call out the name of this trouble-maker, lol. She took it upon herself to comment on this journal and blame me for all this, naturally. :3 Scroll down, if you want to see just what sort of person is causing all this. The hateful comment isn't hard to miss. A basic summation of what's been going on: dear Sato here hates me for not paying enough attention to her. She decided to link every aspect of her depression and deteriorated mental state on me, because apparently I'M the one who could have stopped all this. xD Stopped all what, exactly? That was never really made clear. Anyway. I'd recommend steering clear of this person in future, everyone. She tends to turn on her friends and guilt-trip them.Alright, ENOUGH. *EDIT*1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Like CuddlesandHuggles, for example. Sato decided Cuddles was becoming closer to ME than to HER, and that sent her into another little tantrum, in which she proceeded to guilt-t

EDIT: Some things have suddenly come up for me at the end of the month, so I'm moving the contest end date from Oct 31st, to Nov 30th.
Well, we haven't had a contest in quite some time, so I thought I would start one.
The theme will be "The Women of Dreamworks". This is just a small, and hopefully fun contest. I don't have much to offer for prizes, just some points.
However, MoonyMina has offered drawing prizes to go along with the points. (see the prizes below)
The point of this contest is to celebrate the great female characters that Dreamworks has created and brought to life. So each picture MUST feature TWO or more female Dreamworks characters (crossovers between Dreamworks movies is welcomed).
No mature pictures.
This is an art contest only, so no fanfics.
Both Traditional and dig

CONTEST! The Same Name Game +Bonus Points UpdateAlright guys, the contest is over! Thanks for all the awesome entries! I'll judge them and decide a winner soon.CONTEST! The Same Name Game +Bonus Points Update2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So, I was
running barefoot through the wilderness admiring hot dudeswatering flowers and thinking about anime characters when suddenly... BAM! I was struck forcefully in the head by an idea for a contest with a rhyming name!
Welcome to the SAME NAME GAME!
Using my mystical otaku/gamer powers, I discovered that many anime characters share names. And are often quite different from each other. Which is funny when you end up with a good-looking serious vampire guy sharing his name with a cute pink magical little girl.
Draw two or more characters together that share their name!
No OCs! This is a fanart contest! The characters can be from anime, video games, manga, movies, or random things like Vocaloid.
Two or more characters per entry. It kind of defeats the purpose if you only dra
Arts for Animal Rights Contest 2013!Hello! I´m officially starting right now the Second International Arts for Animal Rights Contest (IARC)! The first one was in the first half of 2012 ( http://mauriciokanno.deviantart.com/journal/Results-of-the-contest-Arts-for-Animal-Rights-293635351 ); there was also a contest for human rights, in the second half of 2012 ( http://mauriciokanno.deviantart.com/journal/?offset=1#/d5fvbp3 ).Arts for Animal Rights Contest 2013!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Your challenge is to create (or offer, if made since 2010) a nice piece of art supporting animal rights, doing your best to show to the world the importance of respecting ALL the animals (you´ll likely focus on just one or some of them, but I mean, please choose an animal that people usually are not respecting). You just can´t offer again the same piece already offered in the last edition of this contest, in 2012.
As last year, every kind of art will be accepted, if it fits on this demand. As I´m in deviantArt, I expect to receive mainly traditional or digital art, but I will gladly accept photography
Love for A Mother: A Contest of Support [EXTENDED]Something a little more Serious.Love for A Mother: A Contest of Support [EXTENDED]2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So usually on DA, regarding Journals and deviations and whatnot, I try leaving my home/love/personal life out of the internet, and peoples inboxes. No one wants to hear about something that has nothing to do with them. However, there are a few times, when
I feel that I need the support of a community. Or rather in this case, I would like to ask of the community to help in supporting my mother. Like most mothers, mine works hard to pay her bills and live a normal happy life. She also help my grandmother around the house, support two needy children, and deal with a clingy ex-husband, all the while waiting for a good man to come and treat her right.
I love my mother like you don't even know, for her strength, her support, and her generosity, her kindness... her ability to just be a mom. She gives so much of herself. She recently lost a very good friend, and a fellow artist, who took his own life. I don't think that anyone saw it coming really, l

SAVE THE ELEPHANTS: As many of you already know, I recently returned from a month in Thailand where I helped give veterinary care to rescued Asian elephants at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai. Below is one of the elephants we worked with daily - an older female called Mae Tee.
Before she was rescued, Mae Tee worked for two owners who used her for illegal logging. The first owner worked Mae Tee throughout the day and the second drugged her and continued working her through the night. As a result, Mae Tee has problems with deteriorated joints along with foot rot and ulcers on her feet. Although she currently receives treatment from veterinary volunteers at the park, the veterinary wraps used to cover Mae Tee's rear feet are costly and need to be replaced twice a day in order to keep her feet dry and clean.
Kimono DressesAfter playing around last night, I was finally able to make a kimono dress with some extra fabric I'd bought years ago! They take a ton of fabric and lace, but the type of fit and measurements needed will make me able to start offering them in the store!Kimono Dresses7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I have so many ideas for some wonderful Japanese-inspired cosplay outfits. I'm already planning some Eeveelutions in this style as well as a TARDIS, Inuyasha, Link, and whatever else I can adapt it for!
I also love that fact that they have three parts: the jacket, the skirt, and the obi/tie. THis way they can be worn differently =3 Someone on Facebook asked for pictures of it on a person, so I threw together three different outfits. I'm not thrilled with the tights and shirt I chose for the skirt portion, but it works for something really quick =3
So excited to start making these! <333
