Sometimes it was the echo of her rage.
It came without warnings, splitting in half those long days of testing the days in which her Aperture, the Aperture she had been planning since her first moments, had finally trapped the whole lot of humans in its maze.
Her deadly calm would break, all of a sudden; and the hatred would burst in her cables, bringing back to life yells and tears of events long gone by then.
The worn faces staring at her from the test chambers became full, healthy and arrogant again; she saw them through the eyes of a offended woman, of a victim. Their bodies looked renewed and clean, back in space and time she was among them and protested, screamed, argued back from the bottom of her heart. She struggled to save her dignity, to save herself; but it was too late.
Always too late, forever too late. Too late to take back her silent consent, too late to prevent her desperation from exploding; too late to spare hundreds of people the fate they had suffered,
Gutter- The LenoreThe Laughing Sailor was, in Loch's opinion, the perfect example of a tavern- at least, the kind his father had warned him to stay away from. So, naturally, it lifted his spirits a little to go inside. Most of the men were already roaring drunk, a few girls were sitting in the laps of strangers and giggling foolishly, and Loch was certain that there was a brawl beginning in the corner of the room.Gutter- The Lenore4 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
This was soon confirmed when one of the men threw another onto a table, sending crockery and mugs clattering everywhere, while the surrounding people began egging the two on.
"Over here," Nemi said, pulling him towards the barman, an ugly fellow with dark eyes and very little hair left. He leered at Nemi as they approached, and gave her a condescending snort when they were in front of him.
"Wha' ya want now, girl?" The man asked her, reaching down and beginning to clean out a glass in a dirty pail of water that he had set under the bar.
"Oh, nothing much," Nemi replied airily, gesturing
The Reassurance of GreenIt was Ella's idea to hire a gardener for my mother's tulips. The Reassurance of Green2 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"I've been doing fine with them," I had said, a little surprised at the sudden suggestion. My sister had looked pointedly at the small patch of tulips that had previously encompassed the whole side yard. They were already dying, and the bulbs would have to be planted again soon. I had been planning an intense Internet search for that.
"I'd like to see you do better," I had muttered, but agreed nonetheless. I left the actual hiring to my sister, though.
Which led me to this moment, staring at a stranger on my doorstep and hoping rather desperately that there had been a mistake and he was not, in fact, the gardener my sister had hired.
"Can you… wait here, for a moment?" I asked the man. He nodded, clasping his dirt-encrusted gloves in one hand, and tugging at his ponytail with the other. I scurried inside.
Ella was supremely unconcerned.
"Who cares if he's dirty?" she asked, looking torn between amusement and exasperation. "G

Finn and Jake walk passed Tree Trunk's house and stop at the entrance to the Evil Forest. "You sure this is where we start, man?" asks Jake.
"Um " Finn pulls out the map and looks at it. "Yup, Princess Bubblegum has here that we go through the Evil Forest first," says Finn.
"It's been a while since we've been in there. Last time we came here was when Tree Trunks ate that crystal gem apple," says Jake as they walk into the forest.
"Yeah, wonder if anything has changed since then." The two adventurers walk deeper into the forest, keeping their guards up. Along the way, Finn begins thinking of Marceline and all the good times they spent together before she got the vampire flu. Then he started thinking of what it would be like if they were in a relationship. Would it be any different from how they usually spend time together?
As Finn continues thinking, Jake takes the map and begins looking through it. Without realizing it, they come across a fork in the road. Jake takes the left path

Finn and Jake's jaws drop open in shock. "Wh what?" questions Jake.
"If we don't find her cure soon, the vampire flu will cause Marceline to die," says Bubblegum, tearing up a little.
Everyone in the room is silent; all that can be heard is Marceline's soft breathing. Finn's eyes slowly begin tearing up. Something inside him just breaks: his heart. When Bubblegum said the word 'death', Finn's heart snapped in two. He doesn't know why, but all he knows is that he might lose one of his best friends. Tears now gushing from his eyes, he rushes off.
"Finn, wait!" Jake calls.
"What's wrong with him?" asks Bubblegum.
"I don't know. Last time he was like this was when our parents died. What do we do?"
"Okay, I'll go and look for the cure to the vampire flu; you just go and find Finn. I'll meet up with you guys as soon as I find the cure."
Jake nods and rushes off after Finn while Bubblegum heads for the library.
After searching all day, Jake can't find Finn.

Banishing the thought and considering the boy critically, Nemi reached down and wrapped her arms under his shoulders and attempted to hoist him up, giving a squeak of surprise when she realized that he was heavier than he looked. She adjusted him a bit before spotting something on the ground near him- the piece of parchment the other man had been holding earlier. Setting him back on the ground, she picked it up and unfolded it, eyebrows raising in surprise at the letters scribbled onto it. It was written in a strange, flowing letteri

"Honestly, we have next to nothing to work with these days." He murmured, grasping the girl's chin and pulling it upwards so he could look more clearly into her face. "Brown eyes, brown hair... too commonplace. What I wouldn't give for a honest-to-God natural blonde or a redhead. Everyone's getting sick of all the dyed products we've had to make. Ugh. Well, give this one some blue eyes. Keep the freckles; maybe they'll add something more natural to her."
The young man, eighteen at most, who had brought the girl into the room, nodded. He gently lifted the slender figure off the ground- the girl's head lolling against his shoulder as he did so- and to her feet, wrapping an arm around her waist to support her.
"Jude, I have too many appointments today to watch you take your time with this. Drag it if you must, but hurry."
Jude nodded again, keeping his head down so the good Doctor wouldn't see th

I can't say I blame them. What I did was harsh, even by my standards.
But he knows I didn't earnestly mean anything that came out of my big mouth, doesn't he? He has to know. In the heat of the moment, I honestly felt like I meant it, but I really didn't. I swear. I know I can be overdramatic and insufferable at times, but this morning was overly emotional as it was, but then he came in and pushed me over the edge just by being himself. Sorry if he just so happened to walk through the door at the wrong time. It's not my fault.
At the same time though, it is.

I reek, I feel grimy, and I want to wash away not only the grease from working on our only means of transportation, but the muck of this entire day.

Everyone stares at the mysterious figure standing in the doorway in silence. The figure is very tall and is dressed as a plague doctor. In his right hand is a cane, in his left hand is a black suitcase, and on his left shoulder is a raven. Everyone continues to stare at him in silence for what seems like hours. Finally, Bubblegum is the first to speak.
"Who who are you?" she asks.
"Oh, of course," the figure says, walking into the room, his feet making a "click" sound with every step he takes. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Dr. Ravenwood, and I am very well known for my cures for the freezer burn flu, the lumps, and much more; it is a pleasure to meet you princess," he says, bowing down and taking his hat off.
Princess Bubblegum looks at him, a shaky smile on her face. "It's nice to meet you to, doctor. But why exactly are you here?"
"Well," he starts as he stands up straight and puts his hat back on, "I was making my way to the Rock Kingdom's hospital to meet with Dr. Princ
The MeadowThe meadow is full of flowers nowThe Meadow3 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
I remember how in the Summer months we used to play
When hayfever struck you would laugh
At how I sneezed the cobwebs away
We would startle birds and watch
As they chased away the dying hours
Just for a few more minutes, seconds, in your company.
I would like to lie in the meadow now,
And let the flowers dance over me
I will listen to the birds sing their hymns
In their hushed dulcet tones
As the sun begins to fade.
I would lay our bodies side by side
The wind will kiss our skin
We shall dream with our hands entwined
Of the thousand moments that belong to us
But you have long since gone away
And so I lie in the meadow alone.

The first song is easy; it is the song of magic and love. It is a song for the world and, therefore, it is the sort of thing you hear murmuring through the streets late at night or in the hum of young people dancing. I first heard it long ago; I was travelling deep into the recesses of my mind, and I discovered the image of myself. It was like a mirror, but one that was thousands of years old. Rather than bother him, the image that is, I decided to just watch. And to just see where he might be going.
The image of myself was walking in the garden.
He was wandering, clearly unaware of where he was going: lost and lonely. Through the canyons and forests, across the desert. The images flashed by, but I knew he'd been travelling for a long time. While I watched, he met a girl in the forest, and she took his hand and g

"That movie was awesome!" exclaims Finn as he, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, and Marceline all make their way out of the drive in theater. Ever since the Door Lord incident, the four of them have been hanging out more. For the most part, they got along fine, but occasionally, Marceline and Bubblegum would have a fight. But their fighting was getting less frequent each time they met up, meaning they were slowly on the path to friendship.
"You know it man. That guy went ba-nay-nay on those zombies. He was all like, bam! And pow!" exclaims Jake, imitating a scene from the movie they saw.
"Well, I liked it when the couple was reunited at the end of the movie. I love a good happy ending," says Bubblegum.
"What about you, Marceline? Did you like the movie?" asks Finn. Marceline is looking up at a nearby tree, where a raven is seen sitting on a branch, staring down at her. "Marcie? Hello?"

"Benji, wake up. It's me."
Someone was talking to me. For a moment I could see. But I sank back into unconsciousness.
Something soft and cold pressed against my lips. My eyes opened. I saw a pair of warm dark eyes. Again, so familiar. My memory was muddy. I blinked a couple times. Sara? Yes. I smiled.
She pressed her finger against her lips. "Shh, don't talk. Scoot over, I'll bunk with you tonight; I don't want you to freeze."
"No " I protested. "I d-d-don't want you to catch it-"
"Don't be stupid, Benji. I'll be fine; you did the same for me, so don't try to be a hero." She looked at me with that look. The stubborn look that she gave me when she made up her mind and nothing would change it.

A wet splash echoed in the twisting chamber each time one of Nemi's boots made contact with the dank water coating the floor. Despite the slime clinging to her boots, however, Nemi's expression stayed determined, her brows slightly furrowed in concentration. Her splashing steps were fixed in a continuous, rather monotonous rhythm, until she reached a fork in the tunnels, where they paused. A few moments later, she turned on her heel and chose the left passage, confidence making her steps lighter than before. The package slung over her shoulder swung back and forth as she walked, but she didn't seem concerned in the slightest for it's welfare, tossing it over her shoulder to get it out of her way when it slipped forward again.
Twenty years ago, a person traveling this far underground, even in the treacherously winding sewers, would be decidedly normal. The underground sewers had then been a source

We exchange the normal pleasantries. She is subtle and graceful; demure and polite. She speaks like an orchestra, her tones long and smooth, but there's a hiss there, like steam from a radiator. It works for her, and I've never done this before.
She laughs at that, a sound like a sour note that tugs somewhere at my stomach. "Exotic," I say; and she laughs at that too.
I realize she's waiting for a sign, so I imagine a flare between my lips and blow it out, a slow exhale. I wobble in the breath, but she catches me with her eyes. Black eyes, I notice, all the way through, but

I practically ran to the lunchroom, trying to escape Edward, something I thought I would never do. He was truly upset over the whole toast thing, which I found utterly hilarious really.
My vampire boyfriend was now afraid of toast because of me. Oh, I would never let it go. At the most random times I would probably wave toast in his face, just to get on his nerves. After all, what was a good relationship without a bit of teasing and taunting every now and then?
I suddenly found myself sitting next to Alice picking at some 'nice' Cafeteria food. I was staring at Edward, planning my next attack. Oh I was so mean to him, but it was so funny!

Perfect ContritionIn a proper Catholic church, everything echoes. Any sound uttered within the building bounces of the floor and the walls and the high, vaulted ceilings, so much so that I imagine that they could easily reach the ears of God himself. It's a rather poetic thought, the voices of mere mortals ringing towards Heaven with the help of good acoustics, but that thought's tempered by the fact that it includes every single noise: the coughs of emphysemic old men, the rustling of an impatient young girl's dress, and the taps of even the softest rubber-soled sneakers are no exception. On rainy days like this one, those shoes tend to squeak, which probably hurts God's ears as much as it does mine. And an angelic voice
Who loved everything
From the stars in the night sky
To the sound of waves crashing in the ocean
But most of all,
She loved the people.
People who farmed,
People who were sick,
Men, women, children,
Just each and every one of them
Had a place in her colossal heart.
Every day she would sing
A song of life.
Of how man planted his rice
Or of how the cocks would crow
Just before the sun would rise in the east.
She brought joy to all who heard her
And was dearly beloved.
She was content.
She had an unusual visitor,
A lone man from the west.
He was a stranger just passing by,
But when he saw her lush colorful feathers
His eyes shone with greed.
Despite all her protests,
He stole her from her home
And locked her in a cage.
Many other birds,
All of different kinds and hues
Shared her miserable fate.
Filled with despair,
All night and day.
Confused by this strange sound,
