Caged InWho would have thought the years being locked in a cage would be the happiest time of my life?Caged In6 months ago in Short Stories More Like This
I used to dream about gliding- my wings spread wide as I rode the breeze over a horizon that went on forever. I would wake in the dark and scream out in frustration, hoping that someday I could sing my real song.
The nights became longer and the dreams became unwelcome. You see, when I'm too caged in, fantasies are more like nightmares, taunting me, teasing me; a blatant reminder of what I can never have.
It was all I wanted. It was everything.
I escaped the first time the opportunity presented itself. Barreling through the unlocked door, I ran down the table and leaped through the open window with wings unfurled. I sang then, the sweetest noise I have ever made.
Until I fell.
I had never truly experienced the sensation of falling. It wasn't as peaceful as I imagined. It was terrifying.
I thought flying would come easy. I thought I would simply beat-be

Dark Star RisingMy youth was all about evolution.Dark Star Rising6 months ago in Free Verse More Like This
Transition a novelty
in a world that never stopped turning.
The sun always rose from the east.
Eternally disappearing into the western horizon
in an unending cycle.
The night was spilled ink.
A nebulous backdrop for luminous stars
and a moon in constant metamorphosis.
Dawn would tip-toe over the horizon
chasing away misty clouds of sleep
and a new day would begin.
Growing up in a world of diversity was never boring.
Life shifted and swayed with the seasons,
revolving and mutating at a sometimes frightening speed.
Knowledge and confidence came with age.
Always reaching beyond boundaries into the shadowy unknown,
with a compass as my guide.
I wanted to sprout horns
and become the devil-
To keep the dark stars rising
and stay inside the night.
I wanted to sprout wings
and hold the sun in place-
To keep the daylight forever
and still the hands of time.

Voodoo NightmaresShe walks through the quarter and is given a wide berth. A Voodoo priestess is what they call her and most of them are petrified of her wrath.Voodoo Nightmares9 months ago in Short Stories More Like This
The tourists consider her an attraction; a freakish side-show they must see. Some giggling, some hesitant as they clamor into her shop.
"Look but do not touch," she warns in a deep, foreign accent. They eye her warily and she eyes them right back with a grin all but one of them thinks is pure evil.
"We want to learn Voodoo," says a the boy in the back. Stepping forward he smirks and leans over, resting his elbow on her desk. He's the only one who does't think she's evil at all. He thinks she's just putting on a show with her gris gris bags and her shop filled with useless trinkets.
"I can not teach those who do not believe," she replies, her grin gone.
"Then make me believe."
She represses a sigh at his challenge. She knows his type- a non-believer in the power of magic. She drags a finger across the skin of his arm and she sees in

and you laughed.
You eclipsed the brazen midday sun
and were surrounded
by a halo of light.
I was chilled in your shadow
and you screamed of heat.
My moth to your flame.
You chased me round the yard
and spit an army of seeds right back at me...
in rapid fire.

These are the senses
we rely on.
But there is so much more
we depend on
We touch and feel smoothness
and roughness and...
We taste clove and lemon...
and are awed
We smell the decay,
the raw stink
of what we are.
We hear the unheard,
the screams and moans
of everything we feared.
New or old,
it does not matter
as it touches our mind just the same.
We dream of
