Caged InWho would have thought the years being locked in a cage would be the happiest time of my life?Caged In1 year ago in Short Stories More Like This
I used to dream about gliding- my wings spread wide as I rode the breeze over a horizon that went on forever. I would wake in the dark and scream out in frustration, hoping that someday I could sing my real song.
The nights became longer and the dreams became unwelcome. You see, when I'm too caged in, fantasies are more like nightmares, taunting me, teasing me; a blatant reminder of what I can never have.
It was all I wanted. It was everything.
I escaped the first time the opportunity presented itself. Barreling through the unlocked door, I ran down the table and leaped through the open window with wings unfurled. I sang then, the sweetest noise I have ever made.
Until I fell.
I had never truly experienced the sensation of falling. It wasn't as peaceful as I imagined. It was terrifying.
I thought flying would come easy. I thought I would simply beat-be

much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket

When the blood moon callsThe transformation always starts in the dark. We don’t need a full moon, we don’t need to wait until night falls but we do- every single time. We run far from home, sprinting until we can’t breathe and every muscle aches. When the blood moon calls8 months ago in Short Stories More Like This
It’s an ugly thing, the metamorphosis, grotesque and uncontrollable. Bones break and flesh contorts in ways that are painful and unnatural. We scream ourselves raw but no amount of begging will stop it. Some of us change into something reptilian, a basilisk they’ve been called. With scales instead of skin and fangs dripping with venom, they slither unseen in the shadows. Others, like me, have fingers that turn into talons, wings sprouting from our backs- we shift into giants ravens with feathers so black they blend right in to the inky night.
We see in black and white, the lack of color usurped by our sharp senses. Color can be irrelevant, but not tonight. Tonight the blood moon rises and it’s the most breathtaking

Spring was burrowed deep, steeping within the confines of hibernation. She dreamt of rampant flower beds, colors rioting in the wake of a new season. Voodoo NightmaresShe walks through the quarter and is given a wide berth. A Voodoo priestess is what they call her and most of them are petrified of her wrath.Voodoo Nightmares2 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
The tourists consider her an attraction; a freakish side-show they must see. Some giggling, some hesitant as they clamor into her shop.
"Look but do not touch," she warns in a deep, foreign accent. They eye her warily and she eyes them right back with a grin all but one of them thinks is pure evil.
"We want to learn Voodoo," says a the boy in the back. Stepping forward he smirks and leans over, resting his elbow on her desk. He's the only one who does't think she's evil at all. He thinks she's just putting on a show with her gris gris bags and her shop filled with useless trinkets.
"I can not teach those who do not believe," she replies, her grin gone.
"Then make me believe."
She represses a sigh at his challenge. She knows his type- a non-believer in the power of magic. She drags a finger across the skin of his arm and she sees in
Dark Star RisingMy youth was all about evolution.Dark Star Rising1 year ago in Free Verse More Like This
Transition a novelty
in a world that never stopped turning.
The sun always rose from the east.
Eternally disappearing into the western horizon
in an unending cycle.
The night was spilled ink.
A nebulous backdrop for luminous stars
and a moon in constant metamorphosis.
Dawn would tip-toe over the horizon
chasing away misty clouds of sleep
and a new day would begin.
Growing up in a world of diversity was never boring.
Life shifted and swayed with the seasons,
revolving and mutating at a sometimes frightening speed.
Knowledge and confidence came with age.
Always reaching beyond boundaries into the shadowy unknown,
with a compass as my guide.
I wanted to sprout horns
and become the devil-
To keep the dark stars rising
and stay inside the night.
I wanted to sprout wings
and hold the sun in place-
To keep the daylight forever
and still the hands of time.
