Community Operations Newsletter - June 2014In this, the first of a new, regular newsletter, I'd like to take a moment to give you an overview of the Community Operations department.Community Operations Newsletter - June 201411 months ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
DeviantART's Community Operations Department encompasses the Help Desk and the Copyright and Etiquette Administration (CEA) teams. These teams are dedicated to providing a high level of support within the community via our help desk portal as well as what we call the "Moderation Desk", which is where all of the deviations that have been reported as being unsuitable or in violation of our policies, await review from a member of staff.
Community Operations Staff are spread out across the globe on a mix of many time zones. Some work from a physical office in deviantART HQ in Los Angeles, some work from their homes in America, Canada, Bahamas, Germany and the UK. This may not sound like a real job, but like any employment, there are clearly laid out roles and responsibilities as well as continuous supervision to ensure that people are meeting expectati
On MentoringHello, everyone! On Mentoring3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I’m so excited for the opportunity to contribute just a bit to Project Educate this week! My topic for tonight is something that is very important to me: Mentorship.
What is “Mentorship,” exactly?
The answer to this question may seem obvious, but let’s break it down for the purposes of discussion. In essence, the “short answer” is that mentorship is the development of a partnership between two individuals in which there is the implicit or explicit understanding that one of those individuals has a skill or bit of knowledge that the other one would like to learn.
People might derive from this definition that the purpose of a mentoring relationship is for one person to teach the other person something. I say, no way! Read on.
As a mentor, my job is NOT to teach you something. Rather, my job is to help guide your learning. If I say “Let me teach you how to . . .” then I am not

We had about 140 entries to this challenging, but beautiful contest to show whatever "baby types" of Nature we could find, in the Springtime.
This was not an easy contest for our judges to take on, considering they were judging on both quality and theme alike, and these entries really had both of these down, very well!!
I can't thank our judges enough for doing such a great and amazing job!
[I hope to be able to acknowledge our wonderful judges more specially, at a later time... ]
And believe me when I say, our Admins., worked very very hard on this Contest!!
It's not easy, at all...

The Neglected Importance of the Online CommunityWhat is the Worldwide Online Community? The Neglected Importance of the Online Community3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Worldwide Online Community is simply a group of people from a wide variety of countries and continents who come together to share their skills, experience, and/or love for a subject. Online communities are a fairly new faction and are not fully understood, their importance is neglected and may not reach their full potential until the next generation incorporates them more and more. It wasn't until the '90s that the Internet or World Wide Web really became a part of the culture, but in less then 20 years its impact has changed society from top to bottom.
In order to really delve into the importance of the worldwide online community, one must first define what it is. There are hundreds of different definitions of what an online community is, but this statement is generally accepted throughout these definitions.
Worldwide online communities are groups of people who join together on the Internet with a common int

Project Educate: Critique Week Welcome to Critique Week!Project Educate: Critique Week3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
For the majority of us on DeviantART, critique is an essential part of our experience and development as artists. As much as we love praise or positive comments from our nearest and dearest, most of us are seeking to improve our craft and to be able to shape our Art more effectively. Some of us purely post our work here to get that all important feedback and the extra special people amongst us are on here to give it.
However, to get critique is not always as easy as slapping up our latest piece into our gallery and wait for the responses to come flooding in. In fact if you genuinely want good critique, you do need to make a bit of an effort to get it and get effective, constructive feedback in return.
This week at communityrelations, we are using the power of Project Educate to have a whole week dedicated not only to how to get critique, but how to give it, use it and make the most of what deviantART can offer and hopefully show you that

Self-Injury Awareness 2013 Fears vs DreamsThe FactsSelf-Injury Awareness 2013 Fears vs Dreams2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
March 1st is a day that calls attention to a sensitive subject that takes on many meanings and forms for people. Self-injury, or self-harm, is the act of deliberately harming oneself physically, usually as a mechanism for expressing distress or coping in difficult situations. Self-injury is commonly associated with cutting, but can also refer to burning, scratching, bruising, bleaching, overdosing, some forms of hair pulling and picking, and breaking bones. Binging and purging may also be considered self-injuring behavior.
The reasons behind self-injury and the people who self-injure vary greatly, but one thing to keep in mind is that it does not matter what culture, ethnicity, gender, or age you are: there are people who have injured themselves from all walks of life. Triggering events like bullying, trauma, abuse, school, work pressures, bereavement and difficult relationships can all contribute to the distress one feels that leads them to self-injure, but
PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b

November ThankstivityIt is easy to point out the flaws....November Thankstivity2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Cliques, lack of communication, bad art that gets too many views, good art that doesn't get enough views, crappy DDs, and on and on and on. The complaints people have about deviantART could fill a book the length of the Bible, but November is a month for remembering what we have to be thankful for and so I challenge you, Solutions Seekers, to take a look around and find at least three things about deviantART that make you thankful for the community.
Create a deviation or journal that explores at least three reasons you're thankful for deviantART. It can be anything from tutorials and other resources to friends you've made to great art you've stumbled across to a favorite group. Whatever it is that keeps you coming back, I want to know about it.
One entry per deviant.
For this challenge, no mature content please. Let's make
PE: The Basics of Giving CritiqueA lot of people seem to think that giving a critique requires you to have an art degree and a lifetime of experience. This is merely an excuse barrier to stop you from trusting yourself in the art of delivering a fine critique. Today's Project Educate guide is an aid to help you consider the basics of critique, and in particular critique on dA.PE: The Basics of Giving Critique3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
This article has been written as a guideline overview only and one persons advice. There are hundreds of existing "how to" guides for critique already existing on dA, so if this one doesn't suit you, take a browse and see what else you can find!
The key rules to critique
1. Keep in mind you are writing a CRITIQUE not a CRITICISM. Be wary of your word choices and make sure you keep in mind you are helping the artist for improvement. Be Constructive, not Destructive.
2. Consider you audience- who is the artist reading this critique? How may they react to your words? Be wary of patronising the person you are c

Daily Deviations UpdateHappy Monday MorningDaily Deviations Update3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I started this morning by signing something "Moonbam13" so either this typo means I need more coffee, or this week is going to be BAMTASTIC!
I'm rooting for the latter
I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated
The following guideline changes are in effect:
The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.
PE: Do You Really Want Critique? As part of projecteducate’s Critique Week, we thought it’d be a good idea to take into consideration when you should and shouldn’t ask for critique on a work you post to deviantART.PE: Do You Really Want Critique?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Before I get any further into the article, I would like to address the fact that the things I say here will not always apply. In fact, they may not even apply most of the time. As with all guides to art and feedback, your mileage may vary, and it’s always best to learn things for yourself. So, without further ado, here’s a few things to consider before you request critique:
Personal work: The most common issue with critique that I’ve personally encountered around dA is the critique of personal work, and a lot of the time this is because the artist requests critique on a work that they are not ready to receive critique on. A few examples of this could be work done as a result of a person’s passing, a difficult change in life, or a work based
