Dylan and I recently came back from a 3-week trip to New Zealand's South Island. It was our first real holiday since Charlotte arrived and we were quite looking forward to it. I was a bit nervous about travelling with an 8-month old baby, but she turned out to be absolutely fantastic as we dragged her out for sunrise and sunset almost everyday.

On this night Dylan was not with us as he did an overnight trek on the Routeburn Track. It had been raining all day until suddenly at 4pm it ceased. The rain caused a multitude of small waterfalls to magically appear, cascading off the mountains around us. I was trying to feed Charlotte dinner in our accommodation and watching the sky very closely. As soon as she finished I rushed out with her and tried to capture what was left of the light - seems that I misjudged how long it takes to get a child fed, strapped into a carrier, covered with mesh (so sandflies don't bite her) and then lugging all the photographic gear to the right location.

Thankfully there was just enough interesting clouds catching the light to make my efforts worthwhile. Bowen Falls on the right hand side of the image is not normally so visible but there was so much water from the rain it was roaring.

Lake Mackenzie

First of all, sorry for the lack of posting but Marianne, Charlotte and I were busy preparing and then finally enjoying our trip in New Zealand from which we just returned. About this shot.....

The location is 13km into the Routeburn track from the Divide in Fiordland National Park. The conditions when I started the trek could only be described as wet.......pouring rain, small rivers became streams to splash across along the trail, little visibility, a roaring 174m waterfall (Earland falls) requiring a detour at its base. All of us who arrived at the Lake Mackenzie hut that evening were sodden through despite our waterproof gear. As such, it was hard to get the motivation to sit lakeside at sunset, but the rain had stopped as we arrived so a little hope turned into smiles as this scene evolved over the still green waters of the lake. A moment to savour ! ps. Charlotte and Marianne were down in Milford sound enjoying similarly spectacular conditions!

Somewhere in Scotland...

The winds picked up and the fire built strength. Over night it fed on 20,000 acres and over a hundred homes. Days later, it still isn't satisfied and continues to engulf everything in it path.

Now up to 52,000 acres and fighting off 1,200 fire fighters, the future is undetermined. The only fact is that this is just the beginning of the end.

P.S. Those are not clouds. Everything from the haze in the foreground to the huge stacks of clouds are smoke from the fire.
