Looks like 2012 is shaping up to be a big year for Tim Burton film releases.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Projected Release Date: June 22, 2012 (USA)
Trailer: youtube link
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is based off the novel of the same name, written by Seth Grahame-Smith. Quite simply the description of the movie is clearly explained in the title. The protagonist is Abraham Lincoln and he is out to kill all vampires.

Dark Shadows
Projected Release Date: May 11, 2012 (USA)
Trailer: youtube link
Dark Shadows is a retelling of the Dark Shadows (TV series) that ran from 1966-1971. The movie centers around Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) who was turned into a vampire by a witch and buried alive. After he is unearthed 200 years later he finds himself in 1972. His home, Collinwood Manor, is inhabited by his descendants and Barnabas has to learn to live in this new time with his dysfunctional relatives, who have dark secrets of their own and may just need his protecting.

Projected Release Date: October 5, 2012 (USA)
Trailer: youtube link
Frankenweenie was originally a short that Tim Burton released back in 1984. It can be found on The Nightmare Before Christmas DVD, and on youtube. For those of you who are interested I would definitely recommend watching the short. The story is about a young boy, Victor, and his dog Sparky. When Sparky is hit by a car the devastated Victor has the brilliant idea to bring him back to life, Frankenstein style. The new film version is going to remain in black and white, but will be done in claymation (the original was live action).

Hope these descriptions prove accurate and are helpful to everyone. Who else is as excited about these movies as I am?

"Jelly, how did you celebrate Hetalia Day? :3"

I went as Colonial!America~

I took BART [for the first time.. and alone ;; ] with Lilly :iconsailuxia: [ABM Lithuania] and Erica :iconwindchimez: [FIFA Spain]. I felt like i was the calmest one about us possibly getting lost. .u.;;

As we headed towards Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, we named my little toy soldier Pedro. XD We blamed him for everything. Oh, and every time we passed a bug car, i would punch Erica in the arm. By the end of the day, she said it was possibly bruised. ILY <3

After countless times contemplating where to go, how to get there, and asking for directions, we finally got our foreign and tired asses to the entrance of Golden Gate Park :'D

When i saw the person holding up the "Hetalia Day Gathering" sign, i was planning on staying 'innocent' and not swear.
But come on, who are we kidding? XD
I swore so much when i walked up to her. My legs and back where killing me from all the walking, and i just couldnt hold it in. ;u;
But it was until AFTER she said "we're gonna hike up these HILLS nou :3" was when i lost it. TT u TT
There was so much hiking, HOLY SHIT ASDDGHDGKH

I died by the time we got there. So much exercise, uguuuu ;;

We all started with greetings and hugs, and then the hosts got out attention for our first game ; u ; /
we had to find 8 flags in teams of 10, and whoever gets the most flags wins a prize.
during the scavenger hunt, everyone was tripping and falling everywhere XD and i accidentally pushed Lilly ;; IM SORRY BBY, ILY <3
by the time all the 8 flags where collected, all four teams each got 2 flags. XD
and i suggested that we should see what crack pairings we got with our flags. our team got AmericaxChina XD
and we wrapped it up with a trivia, which our teams failed at, so we didnt get any prizes ;u; //sob

after a couple of photoshoots, Gangnam style, and eating, we figured out that the hill and tables we where hanging out on where "reserved". but we moved politely~
we thought we found out another spot, but it was also "reserved" TT u TT so we moved to some isolated area under some trees~

we hung out and ate and stuff~ ; u ;

we had a mini fanart/fanfic contest with a 20 minute time limit, and i entered in it~
i drew this:

...i didnt win. ;u;
guess the judges didnt like me drawing bleeding lil' america xD;; <333

[Tutorial] How to make good Dolan comics

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 14, 2013, 5:18 PM
wait, can these even be good ?

Today, Macho Man (previously known as "Major Man" alias "maj men") will teach you how to make a good Dolan comic !

You ready bitches ? LET'S GET STARTED !
-First of all, choose a language for your comic : Dolan comics can be both in English, in finnish, in French, even in Spanish if you wish. ( BUT ITS NOT LIKE IT'D CHANGE ANYTHING ANYWAY. )
-If you're willing to make a video or a flash out of it : You'll need a good voice to speech to make your story interesting to watch ! No no no, even if you have a microphone, don't try to voice act. A text to speech will do a way better job, believe me (you find this illogical ? :iconspockplz: IT IZ LOGICL. I told you to forget what you have learned ! ) . Moreover, each voice will fit a language better, obviously. If you're willing to make it in English, then use finnish/german/French text to speech. If you want it to be French, use an English voice to speech. YES, IT'S LOGICAL. PROBLEM ?
-Now, onto the characters. First, pick one (let's take Homer Simpson as an example) , and try to draw him using your left hand : with your eyes closed, your right hand in your pants and your mind overflowed by dirty ideas while listening to "Never gonna give you up" by Rick Astley.
POOF : a mighty :iconhumrsemsoneplz: appears.
Read these advices and ...
1 - Do not brainstorm. Greatest ideas come from your ass.
2 - Starting point ? Make it start wherever you want.
3 - Art style ? Dude, your style is already UNIQUE !
4 - Try to write the title with your feet. For example, if you want it to be named "Wall Mart : A dark story", it'll go like "weel maeurt : a drak steraui" .
5 - Layouts ? Who cares.
... You got it
- THE TEXT. AAAH... The text. How to type dialogs properly ?
Three ways :
-Smash your keyboard while drinking coffee
-Write with your feet again
-Write like you're chatting with your girlfriend on Windows Live Messenger (:DDDDDDDDDDDD <3333333333333333333333333333333333 LOLOL FU FU XD XD XD XD XD)
-Do all of the above.
But don't worry if people have troubles pronouncing your script, the text to speech will help ! (or not)
Forget grammar, common sense, and modesty.
WARNING : This may harm your spelling. Do it at your own risk ! English almost died because of Dolan.
-At last ... The scenario.
AAH, the scenario. You'll need to ask your 4 years old sister for help. She'll find the perfect plot for your story. If you don't have one, then a 35 years old psycho jailed for life would do the job !
Forget ethics, ethics r for fegits.
Forget the definition of "coherence" , dis is for fegits as well.
Understand that Hitler shits lots of rainbows.
Become a zoophile.
HERE YOU GO FAGITS ! Have fun making Dolan comics !

PE: A Guide To Vexel Art

Mon Jan 7, 2013, 6:39 AM

:star: Welcome

Welcome to Vexel Art week with Project Educate! I am TheLastHuzzah, your host for the week. Today I am introducing you to Vexel Art, and digging nice and deep to aid the understanding of this fantastic media. I’m more than happy to answer any questions you may have, so if anything confuses you or you’d like clarification, please don’t hesitate to comment!

Nakanaide by LevinaLeo Frozen by JeremyYoung Mermaid in Aquarium by saulom

:star: Introduction

Vexel Art takes a great deal of time, patience and skill, contrary to public opinion. This misunderstanding has arisen because, sadly, it is often (incorrectly) said that vexel art is simply tracing a posterized photograph. While I do agree that this is a way that many people start off in the media, and a small number of people continue in it, vexelling is a form of drawing, in the same way as any other media. The vexel artist may sketch out an idea, and then work using the pen tool to digitally ‘ink’  their sketch, and then begin on the colouring, working up each layer of shading until they have the look they want – same as many other methods of drawing, yes?

So why such stigma? I believe this mostly comes from misinformation, which is giving vexel artists everywhere a bad name! And THAT is what this Project Educate week is for! So, are you ready to really learn about vexel art and how it is created? Let’s get to it!

:star: What is Vexel Art?

Vexel is a digital-based media where blocks of solid colour or gradients are used to create a full image. I always found that the easiest way to describe this technique was comparing it to the traditional cut paper methods – you layer each piece until it creates the look you are going for. The more layers you add, the more intricate detailing you can produce.

01 by DeTerror Hope Phoenix by jimiyo Dance with my father by setSET08

Basically put, vexel is a medium. It is not a style, it is not another word for ‘trace’, nor is it a term for a vector with raster elements.

:star: Why use Vexel instead of Vector? What’s the advantage?

This is a question that most vexel artists will get asked at least once! While I cannot answer for everyone, let me tell you my own thoughts on this.

I think people don't see the advantages of vexel over vector, purely because they are comparing them - they may look similar, but they're two totally different media. That's like asking the advantages of using oil paints over acrylic.

An artist will choose their media for a variety of reasons, some of which I have indicated below in hopes to aid understanding of the subject.

:pointr: You may choose vexel as you like vector but don’t have the correct tools.

For example, you see a fantastic oil painting that inspires you to paint something in a similar style, but only have acrylic paints, you can create your own work in the same sort of style, but it would be a different media. The same goes here – let’s say you have seen a beautiful piece of vector artwork and you’d love to have a go at doing something of a similar style, but you only have a raster-based program, you obviously cannot try creating vector artwork as you don’t have the tools, so you create your artwork in vexel instead.

:pointr: You may choose vexel due to what you can do with it within the program you have.

For example, I and many other vexel artists enjoy the use of the ‘stroke path’ method for making hair, which can only be done in raster media such as vexel, as this technique is create using the brush tool to ‘stroke’ along the path created, rather than being made of shapes. This method is also often used for creating lineart, both in vexel art as well as other digital drawing subcategories.

:pointr: You may choose vexel over vector simply because you do not need it to be scalable.

For example, what other media is infinitely scalable like vector? None of them, but nobody ever seems to question why all digital drawing and painting work isn’t done with vectors, even though the program Adobe Illustrator has the tools to allow the artist to create watercolour-esque images, should they wish to.

So, with that said... why should vexel be any different?

I think it’s simply because it is so closely associated with vector that people begin to question its advantages, trying to compare media that need not be comparable - but if people could try to detach it from vector a little more in their own minds, they will start to see what a beautiful and versatile media vexel really is!

And that, my friends, is why I love it

Glasses Land (red and grey version) by photonica Sevenlakes by tanselotti Dark Paradise by x-posion

:star: Tools

Vexel Art is most often made with a pen tool, or whatever the equivalent in your particular program. The pen tool plots points on the page and can make perfectly straight lines as well as beautiful smooth curves, which is why it is the most popular vexel art tool. I have included some tutorials below which use the pen tool, and I’m sure they will explain its uses much better than I can with my words!

The other accepted tool to use is the lasso, or selection, tool. This can also create straight lines, and can create curves depending on your program.

Whichever tool you use to create the artwork, the basic method is the same – you create the shape you need, and then you fill it with the colour or gradient you need!

:star: Styles & Techniques

As with any art form, there are loads of different styles within the blanket term of ‘Vexel Art’. From reading this article, you should know by now that vexel art itself is not a style, but is a media, and therefore each artist will have their own style that is not only a part of them, but has also been influenced by various other styles found around throughout various media. Below are some various styles of vexel art, based on people

This is basically what passed through my mind when I saw a journal about the same subject in the journal portal lately. I thought it was a joke but sadly not. This is not a guide but a hit-me-in-the-face-common-sense statement.

This is based on my *insert how many years the internet has been around for* years experience in different online communities.

I post stuff here, on fetlife, and on tumblr. Well, I used to - now I hardly do at all.

Not because of copyright. I understand that when you post something on the internet, you're posting it for everyone to look at, and it's going to get shared around. But the comped-up piece of shit you see above (minus my commentary) is all over the internet - it's far more widely distributed than my original version. Back when I used to read my messages here and on Fetlife, I had 12-20 messages per day about stuff like this. Mostly it was people trying to be helpful and telling me "HEY! Look over here, there's another person who smeared shit all over your art!"  And it used to take me an hour every morning to cut and paste URLs into DMCA requests to get this kind of crap taken down.

Welcome to the Internet - 1 by mjranum

But that's really only the tip of the emotional iceberg for me. About 1 in 10 times that I post a DMCA I'd get a message from the person who had posted it. So not only would my inbox be filled with woe from all the copyright violations, I'd get a breakdown approximately as follows:
10% You #*!@&^!ing @#*&!@! I hope your !&*!&^# falls off and you die of cancer!!!
30% By posting an image on the internet it's in the public domain (followed by 3 pages of complete wrongness about copyright)
30% You can't make me stop! Nyaa nyaa nyaa fuck you nyaa nyaa!
20% A lecture about how mean and rude I am
5% A genuine apology
5% Well, I like it anyway, so in spite of your having complained to me and explained why you don't like it, is it OK if I keep it up? (completely clueless in other words)

Understand, as I do, that that's a small percentage of a small percentage of all the people who share my images around. But with the size of the population on the internet, it's a large number in total. On a site like Fetlife, that equates to about 100 threatening or angry emails a year. Yeah, it really makes me feel appreciated.

I set that against the times when someone comes up to me at a conference and says "dude, I love your photography!" or I get an email from someone asking please please please for a high resolution version of the file because they want to make a big print of it and frame it for their sweetie. Or, the occasional emails where someone thanks me for my stock photography helping them get a cover gig for their first book cover. Those are great. I love those moments. But they sure as hell aren't as often as the angry, petulant, bratty, or downright snotty lectures I get from ignoramuses who want to hide behind their personal interpretation of copyright law (which, by the way, is universally wrong) or who are incapable of saying "I'm sorry."

Welcome to the Internet - 2 by mjranum

Let me tell you a true story: one of the better online friends I made on Deviantart is someone I got to know because they ripped off one of my artworks and photoshopped on it (brilliantly) to turn it into a photocomposite. I told them they couldn't do that, and they said they loved my stuff, and I suggested they use a different image - here - ... and we were off to the races. We've been swapping ideas and I've been shooting custom stock for them ever since; It's a positive and nurturing creative collaboration.

You see, I'm not some ogre. I want to get my art on just like you. But I am increasingly feeling backed into a corner. I got into doing the wet plates because a) it's cool  b) I get to work with nasty dangerous stuff  c) it looks awesome   d) you cannot duplicate a plate; it's a unique artwork. I started doing wet plates in order to protect myself emotionally and to protect my art. Oh, want to know how that turned out? Some cheese-brain was taking the scans I post of my wet plates and removing my art from them, so he could use the edges in his images because, yeah, they look cool!! He. Threw. My. Art. Away. Because. The. Only. Part. That. Was. Useable. Was. The. Edges. I almost offered him a wet plate so I could get his address and go talk to him about it face to face.

These are the emotional trade-offs I'm up against. I've finally had to confront the fact that if I want to keep posting stuff on the internet, I'm going to have to utterly concede to the faceless horde out there. I will have to either stop altogether or give it all away. Not just give it away technically, give it away emotionally. And that's the problem: if I don't care, it's not going to be any good.

Submission - 1 by mjranum

If I didn't give a shit how my photography looked, I wouldn't give a shit about someone photoshopping their bad high school poetry over top of it. I wouldn't argue with them. I'd just have to lie there and take it, and I know that eventually it's going to mean creative death for me. Perhaps where I am headed is toward making photos just for myself, and not sharing them with anyone. That's sort of where I am, already. I have boxes and boxes of wet plates on a shelf over at my studio. There, they sit. I have tens of thousands of digital images on my hard drive(s). There, they sit. I am frozen at the perfect apex between anger, disgust, and the desire to quit.
